Pike Brewing Completes Expansion

Seattle, Washington, October 3, 2011

Pike has recently added new stainless steel bright beer tanks, cylinder-conical fermenters, conditioning tanks, a state of the art glycol chiller and a high pressure steam keg filler, and a new gearbox and motor on our mash tun, all allowing us to increase production by approximately 30%.

Pike Head Brewer, Dean Mochizuki, reports that, “Our tanks arenew fermenters now full and we have, for the first time in the last few years, sufficient stock to supply orders.” Pike Sales Manager, Steve Case, had advised distributors to sell Pike beers primarily to existing accounts until the increased capacity was realized. He is now advising, “Full steam ahead!” Steve, a seasoned professional, joined the brewery in early 2011 and reports that the Pike brand is “on fire!” Dean, who has been with the brewery nine years, was promoted to head brewer in April 2011 and has witnessed a lot of changes at the brewery since the Finkel family re-acquired it five years ago.

Pike is a gravity flow, steam brewery in the heart of Seattle’s Pike Place Market historical district. Pike was the brainchild of Charles Finkel, the founder of “Merchant du Vin.” Charles was the first to introduce a wide selection of brewing styles to the United States market; at the time, though it was the largest beer market in the world, there were only a few styles available. The Pike Brewery brews top fermented beers including Pike Pale, IPA, Double IPA, Naughty Nellie Golden, Dry Wit, Tandem Double, Monk’s Uncle Tripel, Old Bawdy Barley Wine, XXXXX Extra Stout, Auld Acquaintance, and others. Pike beers are distributed throughout the Pacific Northwest, and at select retailers around the country.

Because of Pike’s urban location, room to expand capacity is limited to the existing space. The original brewery on Western Avenue dates back to 1989 and is one-half block below the current brewery. When it opened, it was what would now be known as a ‘nano brewery,’ producing around 500 barrels of Pike’s top fermented ale per year. The company moved to its current location and added The Pike Pub in 1996; by the time Rose Ann and Charles Finkel sold Pike at the end of 1997, the brewery had experienced a ten-fold increase in production to around 5,000 barrels. In the ensuing years sales volume remained around the same level.

busy brewery

According to Charles Finkel, “people presumed that the brewery was maxed out on production and that there was no room to expand. We originally designed the brewery to produce around 18,000 barrels of beer.” The expansion team was headed up by Pike Vice President and General Manager, Drew Gillespie. Drew reports, “We chose Newlands Systems of British Columbia to produce stainless steel tanks that are as beautiful as they are functional. Given the space restrictions, we had to trust that Newland’s could produce tanks to our minute specifications. Once delivered, Ballard Transfer of Seattle completed the installation. With less than an inch clearance in some areas, there were more than a few nervous moments; the tanks were raised into place and the team breathed a collective sigh of relief. The expanded glycol system was manufactured by Pro Refrigeration of Auburn WA and installed by Universal Refrigeration. KHS, a German firm, supplied the state of the art keg filler and conveyor system increasing our capacity to 30 kegs per hour. Seattle’s McKinstry Co, who originally built the brewery, replaced the aging mash tun gearbox and motor. When all the work was complete, the outside of Pike’s building got a beautiful new paint job befitting a world class brewery. Even with the expansion, Pike remains a small craft brewery. According to Charles and Rose Ann Finkel, “our sales growth is reliant on word of mouth, much of it from the thousands of people who visit the Pike Pub and tour the brewery annually. Our goal is not to be the biggest brewery, but rather, to be among the best breweries anywhere.

The Pike Brewing Company is a family owned brewery located 1/2 block South of the entrance to the Pike Place Public Market. It is owned by Charles and Rose Ann Finkel who founded it in 1989.

Fox Barrel Releases Unfiltered Pearfection

Unfiltered pure pear ciders smoothed with organic honey. Unfiltered pearfection.

Minneapolis, MN, September 30, 2011 – Smoothed With Organic Honey.

The Fox Barrel Cider Company (Fox Barrel) introduces 2 new unfiltered craft pear ciders to their portfolio in a pair of unique exhilarating, almost culinary flavors; Ginger & Blackcurrant and Rhubarb & Elderberry.

Naturally fermented using 100% pure pear-juice, not from pear-juice concentrate or pear-flavored hard apple cider. No added colorants, sugar, sorbate or benzoate preservatives, and no added malt, spirit, grape or apple-cider alcohols.

“We very much wanted to demonstrate higher levels of complexity and taste intensity in our Fox Barrel portfolio,” said Fox Barrel Head Cider-maker, Bruce Nissen. “We love how the pure pear-wine base carries and enhances the almost traditional flavors and remains deeply refreshing.”

Naturally Supearior

Ginger & Blackcurrant

Pearfect bite. A bold, spicy red-headed pear cider infused with Natural Ginger extract, Blackcurrant juice and organic honey.

ABV: 6.5%
Poured Appearance: Mildly Cloudy
Color: Rich deep rose
Aroma: Soft notes of black currants & delicate pear aromas upfront, followed with a snappy, spicy ginger nose.
Flavor: Rich round berry upfront lending to a crisp snappy ginger mid-palate and a clean, dry finish. Just enough refreshing ginger bite without a heavy burn.

Rhubarb & Elderberry

Pearfectly sharp. A vinous, tart, plum colored pear cider infused with Rhubarb and Elderberry juices and organic honey.

Poured Appearance: Deep haze
Color: Black cherry; raspberry
Aroma: Heavy sweet notes of elderberry & plum
Flavor: A sweet/tart fruit forward flavor balanced with elderberry on the front, rolling into soft pear that complements the rhubarb tartness in the finish, with elderberry still lingering at the back.

“You say you want a revolution. Well, you know, we all want to change the world.

You tell me that it’s evolution, well you know, we all want to change the world.”

“Sometimes making cider seems very much like being in The Beatles to me. Cider rocks, and if our classic pear ciders are Paul McCartney, then these unfiltered Cidery Reserves are very Lennon. A little more complex, a little rougher around the edges, but always gorgeous music. We want to change the cider world,” says cider-maker Ryan Aikens.

Cidery Reserve® Small batch, hand-crafted, hard pear cider. Fox Barrel Cidery Reserves use racked unfiltered pear-wine and are smoothed with organic honey. Discerning drinkers will find residual pear-wine sediment in each bottle for a rich full-bodied flavor that’s true to the pear & yeast and good to the last drop. Give a full Bottoms-Up! tilt & swirl to disperse the apple-wine sediment evenly and to ensure an even taste profile through the entire bottle.

The Greatest Cider Adventures

“When we started our cidery we saw ourselves as cider revolutionaries, and we see a cider revolution transforming our industry across the USA, a revolution driven by true American innovation, creativity and quality. And we feel proud to use real American juice from real American farms. Every day. The best is yet to come,” says Bruce Nissen, Crispin COO and Head Cider-maker.

About the Fox Barrel & Crispin Cider Companies

The Fox Barrel Cider Company is dedicated to the production of superior pear ciders, using fermented fresh-pressed pear-juice. Available in Pacific Pear, Blackberry Pear and Apricot Pear varietals and additional unfiltered Cidery Reserves — Ginger & Blackcurrant and Rhubarb & Elderberry.

Anheuser-Busch Plans $1 billion Investment In Its Breweries

Capital Spending Supports State-of-the-Art Facilities, Quality and Environmental Advances; Drives Growth and Innovation for its Brands; and Continues Anheuser-Busch’s Commitment to U.S. Communities

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Anheuser-Busch today announced plans to invest more than $1 billion in its breweries and other facilities nationwide that will support the growth of its brands and reinforce its commitment to local U.S. communities where it operates.  These capital expenditures include resources spent or committed in 2011 toward projects to further modernize brewing processes, upgrade systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and install equipment for new products and innovations, among other items, with additional allocations being made for projects through 2014.

“Our beer brands are the favorites of millions of U.S. adults, and supporting their growth requires an ongoing commitment to quality, innovation and technologically advanced operations,” said Luiz Edmond, president of Anheuser-Busch InBev North America.  “Our employees, local leaders and communities where we operate are a part of our success, and we are pleased to make business investments that are good for all of our stakeholders.”

Future investments will continue Anheuser-Busch’s long-standing commitment to continuous process improvements in its operations.  Projects launched since 2010 include:

  • $60 million invested in the company’s historic St. Louis brewery for various improvements, including a utilities overhaul to conserve fuel, electricity and water.
  • $34 million for upgrades at the Houston brewery, including a project that allows expanded production by an additional 500,000 barrels per year. The capital investments also help the facility, which runs on 70 percent renewable energy, further reduce its environmental footprint.
  • $34 million to introduce packaging and brand innovation in Cartersville, Ga. Other brewery upgrades improve efficiencies and environmental impact, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • $30 million in capital investments at the Los Angeles brewery for various projects, including environmental modifications to reduce the amount of fiberboard required for packaging and updated energy efficient lighting.
  • $27 million for upgrades in the Baldwinsville, N.Y., facility to increase brewing capacity, add new packaging lines and upgrade wastewater treatment process.

“We are known for our quality brewing, and these investments allow Anheuser-Busch to continue our legacy of brewing and packaging the highest-quality beer at facilities where we make environmental sustainability a priority,” said Pete Kraemer, vice president, Supply for AnheuserBusch. “Brewery upgrades are only one way we contribute to the communities where we live and work, and our local teams deserve the credit for their initiatives to conserve water and energy, increase recycling and make a difference through volunteerism programs.”

In addition to its breweries, Anheuser-Busch is investing in its agricultural operations and other facilities.  For example, earlier this year the company announced a $40 million investment in its Longhorn Glass facility in Houston.  The project involved a re-bricking of the very heart of the plant — its furnace — and expanded production capacity with the introduction of one of the fastest glass-forming machines in the world.

Future spending plans are based on no new or increased taxes or unforeseen events that would negatively impact Anheuser-Busch’s business. The expenditures are consistent with Anheuser-Busch InBev’s 2011 net capital expenditures guidance.

Based in St. Louis, Anheuser-Busch is the leading American brewer, holding a 48.3 percent share of U.S. beer sales to retailers in 2010.  The company brews popular brands, such as Budweiser and Bud Light.  Anheuser-Busch also owns a 50 percent share in Grupo Modelo, Mexico’s leading brewer.  Anheuser-Busch is a major manufacturer of aluminum cans and has been a leading aluminum recycler for more than 30 years.  The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the leading global brewer, and continues to operate under the Anheuser-Busch name and logo.  For more information, visitwww.anheuser-busch.com.

Samuel Adams Announces Experienceship Recipients

BOSTON,MA – Samuel Adams announced the first ever recipients of its Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream® Experienceship, a new mentoring opportunity offered as part of the Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream philanthropy program. The recipients of theExperienceship, San Francisco-based brewer Jim Woods of MateVeza and Rochester, NY-based brewing partners Chris Spinelli and Jon Mervine of Roc Brewing Co., will have the opportunity to visit the Samuel Adams Boston Brewery and meet one-on-one with employees from the Samuel Adams team on a range of brewing and business topics.

The Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream program provides small business owners with the essential ingredients (e.g., microloans, valuable exposure to business counseling and networking opportunities) to become financially independent and see their American dreams come true. The program is available to craft brewers nationwide as well as food, beverage, and hospitality small business owners in New England, Lehigh Valley, PA, Ohio, Chicago and New York City. The goal of the craft brewery component is to support small brewers who are facing the same hurdles around starting or expanding their microbrewery that Samuel Adams Founder and Brewer Jim Koch faced when he first started.

“At its core, the culture of brewing and drinking craft beer celebrates camaraderie, collaboration and an independent minded spirit,” said Samuel Adams Founder and Brewer Jim Koch. “We expanded the Brewing the American Dream program in this same vein, in the spirit of helping fellow craft brewers. I’ve never forgotten how hard it is to get started, and how many barriers to entry there are in the business of brewing. MateVeza and Roc Brewing Co. make delicious beers — and the brewers themselves are extremely talented. I’m thrilled to be able to support and mentor them through the Experienceship and watch their breweries grow.”

Twenty-seven years ago, Jim dreamt of starting a brewery but lacked the means to make that happen.  He applied for several bank loans, but was turned down for each. With a determination to handcraft beer with a constant eye on quality and taste, Jim brewed his first batch of Samuel Adams Boston Lager® in his kitchen. He hand bottled and hand delivered the beer bar-to-bar and retail-to-retail shop. About 10 years later, Samuel Adams began its American Homebrew Contest®, which Jim envisioned as a springboard for other aspiring homebrewers to turn their passion for beer into successful businesses. Now, Jim is helping passionate brewers who have taken the next step from homebrewing to microbrewing by launching the craft brewer extension of the Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream program and the Experienceship.

Offered exclusively to craft brewer beneficiaries of Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream, theExperienceship was created to provide support across communications, branding, marketing, packaging, creative, legal, and sales and distribution-related issues.

“There’s real life experience and book experience, but nothing trumps learning from the experiences of people who have actually lived our dream,” said Roc Brewing Co. co-founder Chris Spinelli. “We recognize that we’re both young and we’re excited at the chance to ask questions and learn first-hand from those who live and breathe the craft brew culture.”

“I have never doubted the power of passion and a good idea, but I have come to realize the importance of execution,” said Jim Woods of MateVeza. “The greatest thing about the craft beer movement is the people behind it. This is a complicated industry, and gaining the tools and expertise necessary to bring MateVeza to the masses is truly a dream come true.”

Recipients of the Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream Experienceship will have the opportunity to:

·         Receive coaching from various employees of The Boston Beer Company & the craft beer industry (functional areas can include finding and buying ingredients , quality assurance, graphic design, accounting/finance, legal, marketing, sales & distribution among others)

·         Visit the Samuel Adams Boston Brewery and meet with Samuel Adams brewers

·         Participate in “Negotiation and Selling Skills” classes taught by The Boston Beer Company’s trainers

·         Receive financial support to exhibit at industry events and expos

THE BOSTON BEER COMPANY BACKGROUND

The Boston Beer Company began in 1984 with a generations-old family recipe that Founder and Brewer Jim Koch uncovered in his father’s attic. After bringing the recipe to life in his kitchen, Jim brought it to bars in Boston with the belief that drinkers would appreciate a complex, full-flavored beer, brewed fresh in America. That beer was Samuel Adams Boston Lager®, and it helped catalyze what became known as the American craft beer revolution.

Today, the Company brews more than 30 styles of beer.  The Company uses the traditional four vessel brewing process and often takes extra steps like dry-hopping, barrel-aging and a secondary fermentation known as krausening. It passionately pursues the development of new styles and the perfection of its classic beers by constantly searching for the world’s finest ingredients. While resurrecting traditional brewing methods, the Company has earned a reputation as a pioneer in another revolution, the “extreme beer” movement, where it seeks to challenge drinkers’ perceptions of what beer can be. The Boston Beer Company strives to elevate the image of American craft beer by entering festivals and competitions the world over, and in the past five years it has won more awards in international beer competitions than any other brewery in the world. The Company remains independent, and brewing quality beer remains its single focus. While Samuel Adams is the country’s largest-selling craft beer, it accounts for just under one percent of the U.S. beer market. For more information, please visit www.samueladams.com.

Sprecher Brewing Releases Wisconsin Fresh Hop Amber Lager

Glendale, WI — In late summer Randy Sprecher travelled to Wokatsch Farms in Wausau to bring back a load of fresh, locally grown cascade hops for a new brew. Since fresh hops have a short life, immediately after receiving the hops brewmaster Craig Burge added all 200 pound to a base brew of Special Amber. Five weeks of aging later, forty barrels of Fresh Hop Lager are ready to be tapped.

When asked to describe what contribution the Wisconsin hops made, Randy Sprecher said, “These Wisconsin cascade hops are not as strong as Oregon cascades, which most people are familiar with. Because their flavor profile is more subtle the hops do not add much in the way of aroma but their acids impart a nice change in mouth feel and slight resin character to the finish. This beer has good drinkability. Cheers, Wisconsin! ”

The forty barrels of Wisconsin Fresh Hop Amber Lager will be available only in draft. The first Milwaukee venues serving this new brew are: Sugar Maple, Club Garibaldi, Rumpus Room, South Shore Inn, Stubby’s Blackbird, Von Trier’s, Milwaukee Ale House and Sprecher Brewery. Elsewhere in the state this new brew can be found at Sprecher’s Pub and Restaurant (Middleton, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin Dells), Sankey’s Pub + Grill (Three Lakes). Updates will be available at www.sprecherbrewery.com.

Sprecher Brewing Company is located at 701 W. Glendale Ave, Glendale, WI. Gift Shop Hours: 11am-6pm, Monday thru Sunday. Call 414.964.2739 to make tour reservations or book an event.

SweetWater Takes 2 Medals At GABF

SWEETWATER BREWING COMPANY SCORES BIG AT GREAT AMERICAN BEER FESTIVAL

Award-Winning Brewery Out of Atlanta Brings Home A Gold & Bronze Medal At This Weekend’s Event

ATLANTA — SweetWater scored big this weekend at what most brewers call “the Super Bowl of Beer Festivals” at the Great American Beer Festival held in Denver, Colorado.  Right out of the gates, the Atlanta-based brewery scored gold as Sch’Wheat took home the first gold medal of the ceremonies for American Style Wheat.  Shortly after, a bronze was in their lap in the Rye Ale category for their Crank Tank, a limited edition brew available now until mid-October.

“It’s just incredible! To grab the first gold of the awards is pretty special, and the first gold for Sch’Wheat which was introduced just last summer is unbelievable,” explained SweetWater’s Big Kahuna Freddy Bensch. “These awards represent the craft brewing’s best. Huge kudos go out to our brewing team, who have been busting ass all year long. ”

These two newest medals bring SweetWater’s total over the years to 12 medals including Small Brewery of the Year Award which the brewery won back in 2002. SweetWater remains the only brewery east of the Mississippi River to have ever won that award.

This was the 30th edition of the Great American Beer Festival (GABF). The premier U.S. beer festival and competition was expected to serve 2,400 different beers from an estimated 465 U.S. breweries to the event’s 49,000-plus attendees. The entire event sold out in just one week

Mad River Brewing & Six Rivers Brewing Collaborate

MCKINLEYVILLE, CA — They say two heads are better than one, and that is especially true when you are talking about beer. Mad River Brewing Company and Six Rivers Brewery have released a collaborative specialty ale to commemorate Mad River’s 22nd anniversary. The limited-production brew is available on draught at both breweries.

Wee Heavy Ale is fondly named for each of the brewery’s head brewers: Dylan Schatz of Mad River Brewing Company and Carlos Sanchez of Six Rivers Brewery, who together top out at over 600 pounds. The name may be playful, but the beer is for serious connoisseurs who appreciate a full-bodied, malty Scotch Ale.

“Wee Heavy is a style of beer similar to the Scotch Ale, yet stronger. It is dark amber in color and just over eight percent alcohol. This brew goes great with smoked salmon, oysters and cured meats. Try it with haggis for a genuine Scottish delight,” said Sanchez.

Sanchez said he and Schatz came up with the idea of collaborating on a beer at the Craft Brewers Conference in San Francisco where a few other collaboration beers were served.

While this first-time collaboration might come as a surprise to some, it is what these breweries are accomplishing outside of Humboldt County that is also worth noting. Both breweries are medal winners of the Great American Beer Festival, the industry’s gold standard beer competition. Mad River Brewing Company even took home the top awards of Small Brewery and Brewer of the Year in 2010.

Six Rivers Brewery has created a splash in a different way. Their involvement with last year’s Los Angeles Fashion Week opened a lot of doors. The brewery regularly receives invitations to high-profile events such as celebrity parties and product launches. Six River’s Bluff Creek Ale was served in celebrity suite at last week’s Emmys.

Six Rivers Brewery has also been noticed by the national media. Everyday with Rachel Ray magazine featured Six Rivers Brewery’s Chili Pepper Ale as a top recommendation in their October issue. Last week, Six Rivers Brewery’s beers debuted on the television show, Excused, and will be a part of the reality dating show all season.

“Over the last year Talia (Nachshon) and I have focused our energies on expanding our brand awareness and increasing statewide distribution. We have also added beers, like the Raspberry Lambic, to our bottling lineup. The response has been incredible,” said Meredith Ripley, co-owner of Six Rivers Brewery with Nachshon.

Six Rivers Brewery is located in McKinleyville. Sixriversbrewery.com. (707) 839-7580. Mad River Brewing Company is in Blue Lake. Madriverbrewing.com. (707) 668-4151.
