Widmer Brothers Releases Raspberry Russian Imperial Stout ’12

PORTLAND, OR – Widmer Brothers Brewing has released Raspberry Russian Imperial Stout ’12, the second offering in the brewery’s recently launched Alchemy Project, a series of three bold, vintage-dated craft beers that can be enjoyed immediately, but are brewed to improve with age.

Raspberry Russian Imperial Stout was first brewed by Widmer Brothers Brewing in 2008 for the Portland Holiday Ale Festival. In the summer of 2011, Widmer Brothers brewers discovered a barrel of the initial batch, which was known as Babushka’s Secret, in the brewery’s cellar. After tasting the beer and realizing how well the beer aged with time, the brewing team decided to brew the beer again as part of the Alchemy Project. Beginning this year, Raspberry Russian Imperial Stout will be released once a year as part of the project.

“This is our unique interpretation of the Russian Imperial Stout style, with the addition of red raspberries during the fermentation process,” said Ben Dobler, brewer at Widmer Brothers Brewing. “The use of Midnight Wheat gives this beer an extra layer of complexity, and the antioxidant-rich red raspberries give this beer storage-ability and age-ability.”

Raspberry Russian Imperial Stout ’12 will be available in 22-oz bottles and 1/6 barrels beginning April 9.

About Raspberry Russian Imperial Stout ’12

– Slight fruit tartness
– Smooth mouthfeel

– Malts: Pale, Roast Barley, Caramel 60L, Midnight Wheat, Chocolate Malt

– Original Gravity: 21.5 P
– Apparent Extract: 5 P

– ABV: 9.3%
– Color: 90 SRM

About the Alchemy Project:

In late 2011, Widmer Brothers Brewing launched the Alchemy Project, a new series of high-end, bold, vintage-dated beers that are brewed for cellaring. Like fine wine, Alchemy Project beers can be enjoyed immediately, but the process of cellaring and aging these beers contributes to enhanced flavor profiles and complexities as the beers evolve with time. This series showcases that evolution.

The series was launched with the release of Barrel Aged Brrrbon ’11 last year, a follow-up to Barrel Aged Brrrbon ’10, which was initially released as part of the Widmer Brothers Brothers’ Reserve Series. The Alchemy Project will include three specialty limited-release craft beers each year. Each will be released in limited quantities and the same three beers will be released every year. Raspberry Russian Imperial Stout is the second release in this series. The third beer, which will be released this summer, is yet to be announced.

About Widmer Brothers Brewing:

What started as a dream for two ordinary brothers who just loved beer has now become a reality for two ordinary brothers who still just love beer. Kurt and Rob Widmer helped lead the Pacific Northwest craft beer movement in 1984 when, in their 20s, they dreamed of brewing unique interpretations of traditional beer styles. In 1986, Widmer Brothers Brewing introduced the first American-style Hefeweizen; today, the unfiltered cloudy beer is the company’s signature brew and one of the best-selling wheat beers in the country. Based in Portland, Ore., the brewery currently brews a variety of beers including Drifter Pale Ale, Nelson Imperial IPA, Rotator IPA Series, Drop Top Amber Ale and Pitch Black IPA. Dogfish Urkontinent: A Tech Collab

(Milton, DE) — Urkontinent is a social collaboration of worldwide proportions.

The seed was planted when Dogfish Head Craft Brewery asked beer-loving tech types around the world to suggest ingredients for a new off-centered ale.

More than 100 ideas poured in, and a small team from the brewery (and a few of our beer-loving tech friends) narrowed the list to five: wattleseed from Australia, toasted amaranth from South America, rooibos tea from Africa, myrica gale from Europe and honey from the United States.

The name Urkontinent, a German word for the theory that all of the continents were once connected, is a shoutout to the worldly ingredients and ideas that make up this beer.

“Urkontinent is a valentine to boot-strapping creative entrepreneurs in all kinds of industries all over the world,” says Dogfish Head Founder and President Sam Calagione.

The careful combination of ingredients gives this 8.1% ABV Belgian dubbel notes of coffee and chocolate-covered cherries.

“It’s a complex beer that starts with a ton of mouthfeel, some molasses and roasty notes,” says Sam, “then ends clean and dry.”

Urkontinent, packaged in 750-ml champagne bottles, will be released in mid-April with a suggested price of $11.99-$12.99

Magic Hat Unveils Humdinger

Magic Hat Unveils a Real Humdinger of a Big Beer Series- New Beers Expected to Delight Drinkers, Intimidate Lesser Libations

South Burlington, VT — Deep in the recesses of Vermont’s most unusual brewery, a new series of specialty ales is being developed. Throughout the winter months, experiments in ale were being carried out in secrecy at Magic Hat’s brewery. A little research, a little chaotic chemistry, and a little blind faith were combined with water, yeast, malts and hops to create the beginnings of one helluva series of big beers. But what to call such a series? A name was needed. A name that would convey the epicness of what the world was about to discover. A Dandy? No, too small. A Doozy? Too trite. A Ripsnorting Sockdolager? Too Suessian. Each beer in this series shall be dubbed…a Humdinger.

Taking Taste Buds Over the Pils, and Far Away

The first epic offering of the new Humdinger® series of specialty ales is an imperial pilsner aimed at satisfying even the most royal thirsts. Over the Pils — truly a real Humdinger of a pilsner — rules with a smooth malt body and is complemented by fruit and floral notes courtesy of copious amounts of Brewer’s Gold and Crystal hops. Beneath it all lies the sweetly satisfying warmth of 8.1% ABV and the crisp bite of 75 IBUs. Not to be overlooked, Over the Pils — and all other Humdingers — shall be carefully hand-filled in regal 750ml champagne bottles.

Go Big, or Go Drink Something Else

Like the greatest of kingdoms, each Humdinger is only around for a finite time at select locations, both bottled and on tap. Over the Pils will be available only from the first green grass of April until the first switches of Leo’s tail (April 1st to July 31st). In order to properly appreciate this special series, Magic Hat recommends swift procurement of all Humdingers before they vanish again within the darkened depths of the brewery. Use of the Sip Code Locator to find these rare beers is encouraged: www.magichat.net/sipcode.
