Narragansett Expands Into New Jersey (PR)

PROVIDENCE, RI — Iconic brewer Narragansett Beer proudly announces expansion into New Jersey. Narragansett, (affectionately referred to as ‘Gansett) is now officially available for purchase at area bars, restaurants and package stores.

Narragansett was naturally drawn to New Jersey following great success in neighboring Philadelphia & New York City and increasing demand from local fans. Introducing its classic American offerings to a major new market, ‘Gansett Lager and seasonal craft brews are currently available in over 100 beverage centers, bars, and restaurants since launching earlier this month, with steady and continued growth.

“Narragansett’s expansion into New Jersey is an exciting step for our company as we continue to accelerate the growth momentum we’ve built over the past six years,” states Narragansett CEO Mark Hellendrung. “Supported by statewide availability and local ‘Gansett fans, we’re optimistic the brand’s rich character will be well received by the region.”

First brewed in 1890 by the “Original Six” team of founders, an entrepreneurial group of German immigrants, Narragansett was the largest brewer and top selling beer of New England for decades. During its glory days, the Cranston, Rhode Island brewery produced almost two million barrels of beer per year and employed roughly 850 workers.  The brand gained notoriety amongst audiences far beyond New England through their ubiquitous slogan “Hi neighbor, have a ‘Gansett!”, whimsical branding by Dr. Seuss, and timeless product placements, including the 1975 release of Jaws.

Due to a series of acquisitions beginning in the 1970s, the relocation of production to Indiana, and the eventual demolition of the original brewery in 1995, the brand quickly lost its market share, along with its unique character.

In 2005, former President of Nantucket Nectars Mark Hellendrung was introduced to Narragansett after asking for something with a ‘little more character’ in a Newport, RI bar. That year, he and a group of enthusiastic investors purchased the rights to the company, and, ever since, have been working to rebuild the ‘Gansett name, creating the foundation necessary to reestablish Narragansett as a beloved brand once again.

Since that time, the company has marked major business milestones and gained much national acclaim for its family of straightforward, high-quality beers. Recent accolades include the World Beer Cup Bronze Medal for Best Lager, being named top-rated Premium Lager by Beer Advocate, and beating out Sam Adams and Sapporo as Best Lager in the 18th Annual Great International Beer Festival.

Currently available outside of New England within Florida, Eastern Pennsylvania, Southern New York, Greater Albany, and North Carolina, Narragansett now increases its footprint into New Jersey. This regional expansion provides the brand with yet another opportunity to reach longtime fans, craft beer enthusiasts, and a new generation of beer drinkers.

U.S. Brewery Count Breaks 2,000 (PR)

Not a 100% official press release- from Paul Gatza of the Brewers Association…

When Brewers Association staff returned home after the inspiring 2012 Craft Brewers Conference in San Diego, we turned our attention to the end-of-month reports we pull from the database for member count, operating brewery count, dues sent in by members, BA Forum users, and circulation numbers for The New Brewer. Lo and behold; our operating brewery count hit 2,051 as of April 30, 2012. The current count of craft brewers stands exactly at 2,000 and the count of domestic non-craft brewers stands at 51.

(These counts are for brick-and-mortar facilities, and does not include contract or alternating proprietorship operations so that there isn’t a double-counting of breweries.)

So when did we hit other milestones since craft brewers have been around?

1,500 craft breweries–2008 and 1999. We hit this number twice, with a dip in between. 1999 was the first time in the craft brewing era. Then we slipped back under in 2001, hit a trough of 1,394 in 2005 and climbed back over 1,500 in 2008. That seems that it  was not that long ago, considering we are at 2,000 now.

1,000 craft breweries–We hit this number in 1996. This was a period of the most openings in the craft era, with 333 brewery openings in 1996. Unlike today, more than 60% of these openings were in brewpubs. I think of this as a time when many communities got their first brewpub and there were many opportunities and good locations for pubs . The count of brewpubs from 1996 to 1998 jumped from under 700 to 1,000.

500 craft breweries–It was only two years earlier that the craft brewery count hit 500. The year was 1994.The craft barrelage was less than a quarter of what it is today, but grew 44% off the smaller base.

100 craft breweries–1988 was the year. We added 40 brewpubs and 10 microbreweries that year, more than doubling the count of brewpubs in the country, and placing brewpubs as the majority of craft breweries in the country. Brewpub dominance of the craft business model reigns today, although the gap is closing as so many packaging breweries are opening. And it could flip to packaging breweries in the next couple of years. The craft brewery count was 124 in 1988. Craft brewers sold just over 316,000 barrels in 1988. The craft brewery count has grown about 16 times from then to now and craft barrelage has grown 36 times in that period.

So when do you think we’ll hit 2,500 craft breweries?

Sierra Nevada Announces Head Brewing For NC (PR)

Chico, CA — Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is proud to announce Scott Jennings as Head Brewer of the brewery’s new eastern facility in Mills River, NC. Scott has been with the company since 2001 in various capacities. In 2004, Scott was named Research and Development Head Brewer, responsible for overseeing the brewery’s 10-barrel pilot brewhouse, where most of the in-depth technical research and recipe development takes place.

“Scott is an incredible asset to Sierra Nevada,” said Brian Grossman, co-manager of the North Carolina brewery. “He’s had his hand in developing some of the brewery’s most popular beers, and has been instrumental in the creation and innovation that has stemmed from the beers in our Beer Camp program. His technical brewing skills are first-rate, as is his ample creativity. Under his brewing leadership, our North Carolina location will be in great hands.”

Scott joined Sierra Nevada in 2001 after visiting apprenticeships with Young & Co.’s Brewery Plc. “The Ram Brewery” in London. He holds a Certified Brewmaster certificate from the prestigious brewing institute VLB Berlin, and specializes in technical brewing and recipe development. Working under Steve Dresler, Sierra Nevada’s longtime Head Brewer, he did the primary recipe formulation for popular Sierra Nevada beers: Kellerweis, Ruthless Rye IPA, the Ovila Abbey Ales series and countless limited edition, Beer Camp, and small-batch beers. Steve Dresler will remain as Head Brewer in Chico, and Scott’s new position will oversee all of the brewing, fermentation, and filtration at the new Mills River facility and will be instrumental in commissioning the new brewhouse.

In January, Sierra Nevada announced that it was expanding its brewery with a second facility located in Mills River, North Carolina. Once online, this new facility will provide needed capacity for the brewery and will help facilitate distribution to customers across the eastern United States more quickly and with a smaller environmental footprint. The facility is expected to employ more than 100 people, and be operational by spring 2014.

Iron Hill To Open 10th Location (PR)

May, 22 2012 – Voorhees, NJ) — The region’s most popular brewery & dining destination, Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant, will open its 10th location at Voorhees Town Center (13107 Town Center Boulevard, 856.545.9009) in winter 2012/2013. This will be the second Iron Hill in southern New Jersey, following a tremendously successful Maple Shade location. Voorhees Town Center, a mixed-use property owned by Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust (PREIT), is emerging as the true ‘downtown’ of Voorhees.

“Our vision for Voorhees Town Center is to bring together a blend of national retailers with the best of regional and local restaurateurs, merchants and businesses so that it is truly a community where people can where people can shop, dine, live and play,” says Joseph F. Coradino, President, PREIT Services, LLC and PREIT-RUBIN, Inc. “The addition of a high-quality, leading restaurant like Iron Hill is another step in this transformation.”

“We were looking for a place with a vibrant community where we could become a part of a great neighborhood, and Voorhees Town Center is exactly that,” says Iron Hill founding partner Kevin Finn, who along with co-owners Kevin Davies and Mark Edelson, have continuously sought out thriving locations for their award-winning concept. All three partners are New Jersey natives.

Beyond the comfortable & welcoming interior of the bar and dining areas, large plate glass windows will separate the restaurant from the state-of-the-art brewery that will produce Iron Hill’s award-winning brews. Through the brewery’s windows, beer enthusiasts will be able to watch the brewing process. Guests will enjoy Iron Hill’s six house beers, monthly beer releases and selections from the Bottled Reserves, the brewery’s most award-winning beers from over the years that have been bottled to enjoy in the restaurant or to take home. Iron Hill’s house beers are: Iron Hill Lager Light, a crisp and refreshing lager with subtle malt and hop flavors; Raspberry Wheat, an American wheat beer with just a touch of natural raspberry flavor; Ironbound Ale, a medium-bodied American Pale Ale with an overwhelming hop presence; Pig Iron Porter, a dark ale with a bold roasted flavor with chocolate notes and slight bitterness; Vienna Red Lager, a European-style, medium-bodied amber beer with a delicate malt aroma; and a rotating Seasonal Belgian Ale.

Finn, Davies and Edelson will enlist Philadelphia-based Sandvold Blanda Architecture + Interiors, who have designed each of their locations, to create the 250-seat restaurant featuring comfortable dining areas, an open kitchen and an exposed microbrewery. In the bustling lounge area, floor-to-ceiling windows will open up completely to the street, weather permitting, dark wood high-top tables and a large mahogany bar offer the perfect place to enjoy freshly brewed beer, select wines by the glass and creative cocktails. Gray slate floors, forest green accents and a vibrant beer-inspired mural, created by acclaimed artist Jeff Schaller, help create the restaurant’s handsome atmosphere.

SWEETWATER BREWERY ANNOUNCES RETURN OF WATERKEEPER® HEFEWEIZEN

Raising awareness and funding for Southeast Waterkeeper® Alliance members one brew at a time

ATLANTA (May 21, 2012) — SweetWater Brewing Company today announced the return of its Waterkeeper® Hefeweizen to their Catch and Release seasonal lineup. The unfiltered wheat ale will be rolling out in limited release on draft at participating restaurants and retailers across the Southeast late this May.

Waterkeeper® Hefeweizen is cloudy golden in color, brewed with wheat and two-row barley malt, and Sterling and Hallertau hops. A refreshing brew for summer in the South, this Hefeweizen ale rings in at 5.7% ABV and underneath its fluffy white head it delivers banana and clove notes from the Bavarian Hefeweizen yeast with a hint of lemon.

“I bet folks don’t know this, but it takes a lot of water to brew our beers,” said Founder and Big Kahuna Freddy Bensch. “What better way to get the community involved in promoting clean water and conserving our coastlines than to take our mission to the next level, and dedicate a tasty brew to the cause.”

Waterkeeper® Hefeweizen made its debut in 2011 as a way for SweetWater to raise awareness and proceeds to benefit local Waterkeeper® Alliance organizations throughout the Southeast. The brewery will be making waves again this year as it kicks off campaigns Memorial Day weekend running through July 4.

Since the start of their efforts with Atlanta’s own Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper® nearly six years ago, SweetWater has raised more than $350,000 for the cause. With such success, they began work with Waterkeepers® across the Southeast including: Neuse Riverkeeper® Foundation and French Broad Riverkeeper® in North Carolina, Charleston Waterkeeper® in South Carolina,  Black Warrior Riverkeeper® and Mobile Baykeeper® in Alabama, along with Apalachicola Riverkeeper® and St. Johns Riverkeeper® in Florida.

Raising the bar even higher, SweetWater will host their first-ever regional concert series this year featuring bluegrass band and headlining act Railroad Earth. The concert series will hit the road June 20-24, touring Raleigh, Charlotte, Charleston and Jacksonville with Waterkeeper® Hefeweizens flowing at each show. Kona Featured On Travel Channel’s Sand Masters (PR)

KAILUA-KONA, HI – This past March, craft beer drinkers were treated to something extra special at the 17th annual Kona Brewers Festival. The cast of Travel Channel hit Sand Masters, a reality show about a select group of sand sculptors who travel the globe to create masterpieces for clients on film, were so inspired by sights on Hawaii’s Big Island that they built a 50-ton sand sculpture to reveal at the festival. The sculpture’s unveiling coincided with the launch of Kona Brewing’s Longboard Island Lager cans, and the episode will air for the first time Sunday, May 20, 2012.

Kona Brewing president Mattson Davis personally toured the cast and crew to Volcanoes National Park to view the eruption of KÄ«lauea Volcano which began in 1983 and continues today at the cinder-and-spatter cone of Pu`u `ÅŒ `ō (high point on skyline). The cast also tours Kona Brewing Company and even gets to take part in the brewing operations for Koko Brown Ale. The crew sculpted on the sand in front of the legendary King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, just steps from King Kamehameha The Great’s palace at Kamakahonu Bay.

The inspiration the sculptors gathered from touring the Big Island resulted in a sand masterpiece that was exhibited Saturday, March 10 at Kona Brewers Festival. Each of the five sculptors had one piece of the sculpture to build for Saturday to reveal as one integral sculpture and included a way to serve cold Kona beer to the 2,500 festival-goers. Drama ensues when the beer isn’t temperature-perfect for Kona serving standards, and the sculptors fragile art of sand sculpting is threatened when the sand is not as easy to sculpt as they anticipated.

The Kona Brewfest episode of Sand Masters will premiere Sunday, May 20 at 4:00 pm Eastern and Pacific times. 1:00 pm Hawaii. Check local listings for more viewing times. The flagship pub and restaurant in Kailua-Kona and the Koko pub on Oahu will be hosting viewing parties with drink specials at each pub during the airing.

About Kona Brewing:

Kona Brewing Company was started in the spring of 1994 by father and son team Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa, who had a dream to create fresh, local island brews made with spirit, passion and quality. It is a Hawaii-born and Hawaii-based craft brewery that prides itself on brewing the freshest beer of exceptional quality, closest to market. This helps to minimize its carbon footprint by reducing shipping of raw materials, finished beer and wasteful packaging materials. The brewery is headquartered where it began, in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island. It has grown into Hawaii’s largest brewery, has three restaurant sites in Hawaii and beer distribution reaching 30 states and Japan. It is the 13th largest craft brewery in the country.
