Upper Hand Brewery Celebrates Grand Opening

Upper Hand Brewery, the new division of Bell’s Brewery is officially open.

Upper Hand broke ground in October, 2013 on an 11,500 square foot facility on Michigan’s Upper Penninsula. Three beers are ready with the launch, Upper Penninsula Ale, Escanaba Black Beer,  and Upper Hand Lager. Expect draft from now until December, when bottles arrive.

“To be able to open a brewery in the U.P. fulfills a lifelong dream for me. I couldn’t be prouder to open the doors of this great facility here in Escanaba,” said Larry Bell, founder and president of Bell’s Brewery in Comstock.

Upper Hand beer will only be available in Michigan’s upper penninsula, with parts of the west to follow. Upper Hand will not be available to purchase below the Mackinac Bridge.

A public open house is planned at the brewery on December 6th, 2014.

Alter Ego Brewing Now Zeroday. Opening in 2015

Alter Ego Brewing has been in planing for the last couple of years in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The brewery is on track to open in the city in 2015, but with a name change – Zeroday Brewing Co.

Theo and Brandalynn Armstrong, creators of (now Zeroday Brewing Co.) made the decision to change the name after attempting to trademark the Alter Ego Brewing moniker. All the legal red tape boiled down to requiring a change the name to protect the brand’s future. Zero Day is a hiking term for time off the trail, doing no hiking.

Construction has already begun at the brewery’s new location.

Second Self Brewing Opens November 1st

Second Self Brewing will open their doors to the public on November 1st, 2014. The brewery has been in planning for five years.

While some of Second Self’s beers have already hit taps in the city, the tasting room opening will bring four new beers to the Atlanta beer scene:

Thai Wheat, 5.1% ABV, 51 IBUs. Brewed with lemongrass, galanga, and ginger.
Red Hop Rye, 7.3%, 69 IBUs. Red ale brewed with a blast of rye malt.
LIPA, 4.3%, 61 IBUs. A session (low ABV) IPA
Saison, 5.5%, 24 IBUs

Second Self’s offering will remain draft only. The brewery plans to bottle and can in early 2015.

Dyckman Beer Co. Opens in Brooklyn

Dyckman Beer Co. has opened in Brooklyn, New York. The brewery is the brainchild of Juan Camilo, originally from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Taking his business Administraion degree he worked at an investment bank, where, while working at the bank, bought his first home-brew kit.

While on the subway reading the newspaper Juan came across an article titled “Craft Brews of New York.” The article described trends in craft beers and all the local breweries that were opening in New York City over the next few months. Juan quickly realized that there were no beer companies in the Washington Heights and Inwood area of Manhattan, one of the places he called home.

Launch beers include:

Dyckman Brew – Pilsner, 5% ABV
Highbridge Summer Ale – Belgian Wheat, 4.6% ABV
Epoca/Saison – Saison, 6.5% ABV

The New Brewery from Bell’s Breaks Ground

Upper Hand Brewery – a division of Bell’s Brewery, Inc. -has officially broken ground in Escanaba, Michigan.

The new brewery build will cost an estimated $1.3 million. Iron Mountain based Gundlach Champion, Inc. has been selected to build the 11,500 square foot facility.

“The Upper Peninsula has always had a special place in my heart.  And Escanaba has all the resources anyone opening a business would want to have.  We look forward to being a part of the Escanaba and Delta County business community” said Larry Bell, president and founder of Bell’s.

Upper Hand will initially hire five full time employees. The beer will be distributed across Michigan’s upper peninsula, and a few Northern states. The brewery should be operational in late 2014.
