Beer From 500 BC!

Obvious beer fact of the day:  Beer has a LONG history.  10,000 year old bottle of beer found in ship wreck. Dogfish Head brews Midas Touch, a beer based on a Turkish recipe found in drinking vessels in the tomb of King Midas.

PhysOrg.com recently posted an article about a brewery dating back to 500 B.C.  Cheers to history.

PhysOrg.com — A scientist studying an ancient Celtic site believes he has worked out the recipe they used for making beer around the year 500 BC.

Dr Hans-Peter Stika, an archaeobotanist from the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany has been studying the remains of an early Iron Age Celtic settlement at Eberdingen-Hochdorf dating from around 500 BC, in particular the six oblong ditches dug for the process of making barley malt for . The excavated ditches contained thousands of grains of charred barley, which Dr Stika believes are the remains of the production of high quality barley malt needed for making beer.

Drinking Beer Is Healthy!

I knew if I wished hard enough it would come true.  Beer drinking (in moderation) is healthy.  Take that red wine drinkers!

From Times of India:
Doctors have suggested that drinking up to a pint of beer a day is good for the health and can reduce the risk of diabetes and high blood pressure.  They claimed that moderate consumption could even help people lose weight if combined with a healthy diet. Doctors Ramon Estruch and Rosa Lamuela tested 1,249 men and women over 57 years old.

Dr Hans-Peter Stika, an archaeobotanist from the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany has been studying the remains of an early Iron Age Celtic settlement at Eberdingen-Hochdorf dating from around 500 BC, in particular the six oblong ditches dug for the process of making barley malt for beer. The excavated ditches contained thousands of grains of charred barley, which Dr Stika believes are the remains of the production of high quality barley malt needed for making beer.

Dr Stika reproduced several methods for making beer that the Celtic peoples in the Iron Age might have used, and concluded that the ditches were used to soak barley grains until they sprouted. Fires were then lit at either end of the ditch to slowly dry the sprouted grains and give the malt produced a dark color and smoky flavor. The slow drying would have stimulated the growth of bacteria that caused the release of lactic acid, which added sourness to the end product.

The excavations at Eberdingen-Hochdorf have also yielded seeds of henbane, a plant also called stinking nightshade and known to increase the intoxicating effect. Dr Stika thinks the beer probably also contained mugwort and/or carrot seeds, since these were known to have been added to beer in medieval times. The spices would have given the brew a much different flavor to the hop flavor known today. The use of hops is not known before 800 AD.

Dr Stika thinks the fermentation was probably produced by yeast on the brewing equipment, or by wild yeast on honey or fruit added to the brew. The final beer would have remained cloudy and with a yeasty sediment, and the brew would have been drunk at room temperature.

The findings are published in Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences, but the Celtic findings are not the oldest beer and beer-making discoveries, as brewing facilities dating to around 5,500 years ago have been found in the Middle East.

Those who accompanied a Mediterranean diet with up to a pint of beer ‘not only did not put on weight, but in some cases even lost weightThe doctors found beer provides the same health benefits attributed to moderate consumption of wine.  “In this study we banish myths. We know that beer is not to blame for obesity,” the Daily Mail quoted Dr Lamuela as saying. Beer contains folic acid, vitamins, iron and calcium, which the study claims provide a ‘protective’ effect on the cardiovascular system.

The subjects who regularly drank moderate amounts of beer were less likely to suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure, and had a lower body fat content.
The researchers from Barcelona and Madrid suggested women should drink two small glasses of beer a day while men should drink three, combined with a healthy diet and exercise.

We are all craft beer fans.  Put that aside for a minute and take a look at this.  How many times have you waited in line for a beer at a concert/ sporting event?  That’s what I thought.  Even if the beer you are overpaying for isn’t a rare barrel aged vintage, it’s definitely a faster way to get it…

Paste Magazine’s Top 25 New Beers of 2010

I was recently asked to help write this article for Paste Magazine.  Josh Jackson & Nick Purdy wanted insight on the top new beer releases in 2010.  My knee jerk reaction was “hey I’m an alchoholic with a purpose!” Finally I could put all this drinking to good use.

As you read over the list, you will see that almost all of the beers were released in 2010.  A couple were ify.  Take Victory Brewing’s Yakima Glory.  Yes it WAS released in 2009 under the name Yakima Twilight.  You know that, & I know what.  Not EVERYONE knows that.  They are blissfully unaware of it’s name change, and are perfectly happy consuming mass quantities of it.  Don’t harsh their mellow.

Some of the beers are “whales” or hard to get one time beers.  These “whales” are magically delicious and are very notable.  Just… hard to get.  If you are resourceful, you could get one.  Trust me it’s worth it.   Happy reading.
