Red Hare Barrel Aged Sour Whabbit Wheat is on the docket by the Marietta, Georgia based brewery.

Whabbit Wheat, an American wheat ale brewed with apricots and peaches, debuted as a seasonal release in spring of 2015. While the label makes no direct mention of the fruit, we are making an assumption.

Red Hare Barrel Aged Sour Whabbit Wheat is aged in Chardonnay barrels with both Brettanomyces yeast and Lactobacillus souring bacteria.

This will be the third offering in the brewery’s Rare Hare Series. The brewery has not yet announced this beer.

Spotlight: Madtree Joon (aged in unique barrels)

Madtree Joon is available once again. A barrel-aged spin on the kolsch style.

Not a lot of barrel-aged kolsch beers exist, making Madtree Joon pretty unique. The the base beer features Pacifica and Cascade hops, aged in Watershed Bourbon Barrel Gin Barrels.

Did that barrel seem weird to you? Columbus, Ohio’s Watershed Distillery selected bourbon barrels to age their Four Peel Gin. Madtree snagged those used barrels for Joon.

This is our second beer we’ve had from the the brewery’s Funk Series. (See Sherry Cherry Raspberry.) Joon is a very unique sour/wild beer, thanks to the combination of ginger, juniper berries, and those fun barrels. The base beer was a kolsch, which really is a ghost of it’s former self. It’s a whole new party now. The beer picked up not only the gin flavors, but a touch of the bourbon too – honestly, never thought that was possible.

Joon, with its unmistakable citrus and pine characteristics, is the solution for those longing to be amidst the evergreens. Aged in Watershed Bourbon Barrel Gin barrels with juniper berries and ginger, this refreshingly tart beer takes a break from the traditional bourbon barrel beers, lifting it to another level. As the days grow long and your spirit yearns for adventure, take the time to drink in your surroundings.

Madtree Joon available starting this June (redundancy noted), in 16.9 ounce bottles. Part of Madtree’s Funk Series.

Style: Kolsch (Barrel Aged. Gin.)
Hops: Pacifica, Cascade
Malts: 2 Row, Red Wheat, Vienna, Flaked Barley

Availability: 16.9oz Bottles
Return: June, 2016

Triple C Kind of a Wild Deal, the breweries first wild

Triple C Kind of a Wild Deal is the Charlotte, North Carolina based brewery’s first bottled wild ale.

The base beer for Triple C Kind of a Wild Deal is an imperial honey wheat ale, that was aged in bourbon barrels. Later in the process, the barrels were pitched with Brettanomyces Bruxelles yeast, plus a healthy dose of blueberries.

But wait – there’s more. There are actually three other bourbon barrel variations of the beer coming, including Ginger Boysenberry, Blood Orange and Strawberry.  All three will see limited distribution.

Not done yet. Triple C is doing yet another variation in rum barrels with mango.

This bad boy rolls in late to the party at an impressive 9.2% ABV, obnoxiously triple parks his Miata, and immediately begins downing drinks. After grabbing your girlfriend’s butt and double dipping the guac, you decide it’s time for him to go. Upon approach, you unfortunately notice his silk robe is a few inches too loose, you lose it and scream “You’ve got to go”. He shakes away from your grasp and exclaims “I don’t know how to put this, but… I’m kind of a big deal!”

Triple C Kind of a Wild Deal will be a 22 ounce bottle offering in late July, 2016.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Blueberries. Barrel Aged. Bourbon.)
Availability: 22oz Bottles, Draft. Limited Release.
Debut: Late July, 2016

Schlafly Hop Trial SMaSH Pack debuts in July

This July, St. Louis, Missouri’s Schlafly Beer will introduce the Hop Trial SMaSH Pack, a new experimental release by the brewery.

The Schlafly SMaSH Pack features four different golden ales, each brewed with a brewer selected hop. The base beer is pretty much the same for each, using simple base malt of 2-Row malted barley. From there, the drinking gets fun.

Hops are the stars in each of the variants. In a world of so many IPA and pale ales with 2, 4, or more hops- this is a great way to get in touch with each of the hops in their own glory. The Schlafly brewers chose hops across four different continents – spanning the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, and United States.

The rundown:

  • Eureka! hails from Steiner Ranch in Yakima, Washington. 2015 was the first time the hop became commercially available. The brewery made large purchase that same year. This one is “dank” and the brewery agrees. Look for Black currant, dark fruits, and pine. It’s there.
  • Hallertau Blanc is the German hop in the mix, first appearing in 2012. Schlafly test brewed with the hop in 2014 and fell in love. It was used the brewery’s white lager last winter. Lots of flowery fruits. Tropical.
  • Enigma swings in from Tasmania, Australia. It brings pineapple, Pinot Gris, and redcurrant flavors. God bless hop breeding.
  • Brambling Cross hails from the U.K. It even sounds English. It’s the oldest hops in the bunch, first released in 1951. Lemon, Blackcurrant, and spice really come across in this hop and beer. Part of the brewery’s Pale Ale these days.

The Schlafly Hop Trial SMaSH Pack will have three of each variety when it releases this July.
