Widmer’s Kill Devil Features Palm Sugar, Molasses, & Rum

Coming this Spring – An insanely good sounding Widmer Brothers Kill Devil Brown Ale.   90% of this ale is brewed with palm sugar and molasses, aged in rum barrels. 10% is barreled straight brown ale.    The Brother’s Reserve is a series of 22oz bombers (presented in a nice box) that ranges from barleywines, braggots, wheat ales and more. Kill Devil is the 6th release.

Sweet barbados and blackstrap molasses provide touches of toasted sugar, black licorice, and blackened toffee to this brown ale while the palms sugars invite notes of subtle sweetness.  Conditioned in Puerto Rican rum barrels, the vanilla and oak flavors and aromas integrate with the calypso hop’s soft tropical and stone fruit aromas.

Style: Brown Ale (Barrel Aged, Rum)
Availability: 22oz bombers. Limited Draft.

Widmer’s X-114 IPA With Grapefruit Is Shaddock

People sometimes describe the aromas and flavors of hoppy IPAs as “grapefruit.” Hell, why not use some then? Widmer’s brewing team used a simple IPA recipe and added a generous amount of dried grapefruit peel to the end of the boil. The aroma is a melody of citrus, with a slight spice undertone, accentuated by the use of Citra hops. The flavor is that of nice hop forward IPA with the bitterness of grapefruit.

The gose style hails from Leipzig, Germany, with 50% of the beer coming from wheat malt.  There is heavy salt present in gose brews (from the water, or salt.)   I suspect the tart flavor will be enhanced by the marionberries (blackberries.)
