Anderby Brewing & Distilling, based in Peachtree Corners, Georgia announced they will close effectively July 3rd after five years of operation. According to an Instagram post announcement, revenues never reached the levels the brewery had hoped.

Unfortunately, due a variety of circumstances, revenues have never reached a level where our operation can sustain itself.  We have personally given everything we have; money, sweat, tears, health, etc. to keep things going. While we know there are a lot of great things coming to our area that we were excited to be a part of, we have nothing left to give.

Anderby Brewing is another in a line of recent brewery closures in Georgia – including Orpheus Brewing, Burnt Hickory Brewing, Second Self Brewing, Tantrum Brewing, and Sabbath Brewing.

Anchor Brewing drops 49 states, ends Christmas Ale after 47 years

After years of national distribution, a heritage brand and legend in the beer industry will disappear from most of America this month. Anchor Brewing is drastically cutting its distribution footprint and cutting a famed Christmas seasonal release.

From now on, Anchor Brewing will only be available in California, where the brewery does 70% of its business.

“Tough economic realities”

Anchor and their external public relations teams were pretty terse on the root causes of this move, only stating that the cutting of America’s longest-running Anchor Christmas Ale was due to “time-intensive and costly brewing and packaging requirements.” Annual releases of Christmas Ale date back to 1975. Every single label since year one depicted a different hand-drawn tree, as well as a slightly different recipe every year.

There isn’t another Christmas beer in America that has been released annually longer than Anchor Christmas.

Anchor Brewing was founded in 1896, and saved from bankruptcy by Fritz Maytag in 1965. In 2017, Japan’s Sapporo Holdings acquired the brewery. Sapporo went on to acquire Stone Brewing as well in 2022.

Sam Singer, a representative for Anchor Brewing tells Beer Street Journal that the brewery will continue to take orders outside of California through 6/15/23. Any current “on order” product will ship through July 31, 2023.

A small amount of Anchor Christmas will be available on draft at Anchor Public Taps this coming season.

Burnt Hickory shuts down production & taproom

At their 10-year mark, Burnt Hickory Brewing announced today on social media that Kennesaw, Georgia-based facility will pause all production and close its taproom indefinitely. The post alludes to a new search for another taproom space to open at some point in the future.

As this has been a tough decision to announce, Burnt Hickory Brewery will be pausing all operations and closing our current taproom indefinitely in Kennesaw on 5/31/2023. This was not an easy choice to make, as we love our community and have been so thankful to serve you great craft beer for over 10 years. We, as the Burnt Hickory Brewery family and team are so grateful for all the love & support that we have received from everyone. However, the craft beer industry has changed and grown drastically, and Burnt Hickory must grow right along with the industry. We believe that our focus needs to be on our community and on our taproom. Namely, we will be taking our time to focus on locking down a new location that provides our customers with a top-tier space to enjoy Burnt Hickory beer that it deserves to be served in.

Sierra Nevada adds Crisp & Tropical Little Thing

Sierra Nevada’s “Little Things” Series expands with the addition of Crisp Little Thing a summer approaches.

The series started with Hazy Little Thing, which is the first nationally distributed hazy IPA in the U.S. For summer 2023, the brewery is releasing a lager- Crisp Little Thing, as well as Tropical Little Thing, the second in their limited rotating IPA series.

Crisp Little Thing is described as “crushable” as most lagers tend to be, 4.7% alcohol by volume and a smooth 18 IBUs. Only found the the “Little Things Party Pack” – 12 pack variety pack.

Tropical Hazy Little Thing is available in 12oz/6 packs, now through August 2023. The IPA features Cascade, Sabro, Sultana, El Dorado, and Amarillo hops, built on the back of oats, Two-Row malt and wheat.

NoFo Brewing acquires Tantrum Brewing

NoFo Brewing, located just north of Atlanta, has acquired Cleveland, Georgia-based Tantrum Brewing. The deal was closed this morning.

NoFo is acquiring the brewing equipment, 10,000+ square foot building, and 5.3 acres of land owned by Tantrum, located just two miles from the base of popular North Georgia hiking spot Mount Yonah.

This is NoFo’s third location in just over three years of operation, as the brewery will open a taproom in Gainesville, Georgia this summer. This move is part of NoFo’s strategy to dominate the North Georgia market.

“North Georgia is a special place for NoFo, and we think our brand will be an excellent addition to White County and the surrounding area. We look forward to serving customers in Cleveland very soon,” says Joe Garcia, Co-Founder and CEO.

Tantrum Brewing will retain its recipes and intellectual property. NoFo will not be brewing or maintaining any of Tantrum’s current lineup.

The Cleveland facility has a 30-barrel brewhouse which NoFo expects to have online by June. The sale will be complete on May 15th and will start re-branding the facility immediately. A distillery will be added to the site sometime this year as well.

NoFo tells Beer Street Journal that their annual capacity will hover around 4,000 barrels annually after this purchase in 2023, only distributing in Georgia through Modern Hops.

The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. NoFo Brewing Cleveland will be located at 1939 Helen Highway, Cleveland, Georgia.
