Firestone Walker IPAs Golden at European Beer Star Competition (PR)

Paso Robles, CA–European beer enthusiasts cast their vote in favor of American hops as Firestone Walker’s Double Jack IPA was named the “Consumer Favourite Gold” for top honors at the European Beer Star competition.

The competition included 1,366 beers from 45 countries. The judging was conducted by 102 expert tasters–including brewmasters, beer sommeliers, and specialized journalists from 25 countries–during a period of two days. The resulting gold medal winners represent “the world’s best beers in 50 beer categories by blind tasting.”

The Consumer Favourite is an additional public prize, with festival attendees blind-tasting all 50 gold medal beers and awarding Gold, Silver and Bronze honors to the top three.

Firestone Walker’s Union Jack IPA was also one of 10 total gold medals awarded to American craft breweries at the competition. A total of 21 American craft breweries won a combined 35 awards in 22 different categories at the event, which was held in Nuremberg, Germany.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized by the judges of the European Beer Star for beers with big American hop character,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “Our collective results send a strong message that American craft beers are world class and changing the way the rest of the brewing community is thinking about better beer.”

Double Jack IPA is an aggressive yet balanced Imperial IPA with mouth-puckering hop bitterness. Huge tangerine, grapefruit and juicy fruit aromas blossom over the herbal blue basil and malt earthiness.

State-of-The-Art Brewhouse Maximizes Quality, Improves Efficiency and Enhances Brewery Visitor Experience

Paso Robles, CA–Firestone Walker Brewing Company today announced that it has begun brewing beer at its new state-of-the-art brewhouse at the brewery in Paso Robles on California’s Central Coast.

The new 60-barrel brewhouse reflects Firestone Walker’s mission to continuously perfect the brewing process.

“We are always aiming to make the next brew better than the last,” said co-proprietor Adam Firestone. “The difference may be tiny, but it needs to be measurable and constant. The new brewhouse is our latest investment in this mission.”

The brewhouse occupies a new three-story tower that has been integrated into the front of the brewery building. The tower now serves as the brewery’s primary visual icon and features broad glass walls on two sides of the second story, providing a permanent window into the brewing process.

“Back in my university days, while homebrewing in my garage in Kalamazoo, Michigan, I dreamed of one day having a brewhouse like the ones I had seen while traveling through Europe on foreign study,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “That day has finally arrived.”

Quality and Efficiency

The new brewhouse is the result of extensive research conducted by proprietors Adam Firestone and David Walker, as well as Brynildson and his brewing team. They were ultimately drawn to a company called Huppmann in Kitzingen, Germany, which has been making brewhouses for generations.

“We selected Huppmann for many reasons,” Firestone said. “These involve wort handling, their proprietary wet mill called Millstar, the overall simplicity of the design, the flexibility of the installation, and the technology to marry our existing brewhouse into the new one. The automation package will allow us to precisely replicate each step and track progress unlike ever before.”

The brewhouse was installed with extensive custom features made to meet Brynildson’s vision for maximizing beer quality, including his personal modifications for milling, hop dosing, and kettle efficiency. The new brewhouse equipment allows Brynildson the ultimate flexibility for making every beer style imaginable. “By the time we got done with it, it essentially became a full-blown custom hot rod brewhouse,” Brynildson said.

The new brewhouse also improves the overall efficiency of the brewing process, in terms of both manpower and resources. “We elected every option possible to save on energy and water consumption without compromising the quality of our beers,” said Mark Fischer, the brewery’s plant engineer. “We will now be able to brew the same amount of beer using half the amount of energy as before.”

Architectural Inspiration

The tower design of the brewhouse is an efficient way to brew beer, using gravity to move ingredients when applicable, and also requiring a smaller footprint.

The new brewhouse tower was designed by local architect Val Milosevic and incorporates design features that honor two iconic structures in the Paso Robles region–the Farmer’s Alliance building in Paso Robles, and the Templeton Feed & Grain building in the nearby hamlet of Templeton.

Both of these buildings are visible testaments to the region’s rich agricultural heritage, and Firestone Walker Brewing Company was inspired to reflect this heritage in the design of its new brewhouse tower.

The brewhouse is adjacent to the brewery’s new visitor center, which features viewing windows into the hop storage room and the brewhouse control room, as well as a tasting bar and retail shop.

The launch of the new brewhouse and visitor center follows Firestone Walker’s recent opening of the adjacent Taproom restaurant and the hosting of the inaugural Firestone Walker Invitational Beer Fest in Paso Robles in June. “Our goal is to create a destination experience built around craft beer education and appreciation,” Walker said.# # #

Firestone Walker Announces Pre GABF Dinner (PR)

PASO ROBLES, CA – You might call it “Firestone Walker unplugged”–a rare night of food, barrel-aged beers and brewery banter coming to Denver’s Mile High Station on October 10 as Firestone Walker Brewing Company partners with Chef Hosea Rosenberg to host “The Lion, The Bear & The Brewmaster.”

Arriving on the eve of the Great American Beer Festival® in Denver, this event will feature a vertical tasting of barrel-aged anniversary ales from the Firestone Walker library, specifically rare sold-out vintages from the previous four years: XII, XIII, XIV and XV.
Rosenberg will present a bold menu of small plates created to complement each beer.

Along the way, brewery proprietors Adam Firestone (a.k.a. the bear) and David Walker (a.k.a. the lion) and Brewmaster Matt Brynildson will share stories and scuttle from inside the brewery. The conversation will be moderated by Justin Crossley of The Brewing Network.

“I have no idea what these guys will say; I hope they behave themselves,” said Jamie Smith, the brewery’s marketing guru. “Adam, David and Matt will introduce each anniversary beer and go from there. There’s no script. And if there are any skeletons in the closet, they’ll probably come out.”

The festivities will conclude with an exclusive unveiling of Firestone Walker’s newest anniversary bottling: XVI.

Rosenberg is the proprietor of Blackbelly Catering and the winner of season five of the popular Bravo network television series Top Chef. “Chef Hosea’s talent and creativity will bring the best out of each beer,” Smith said. “The pairings will be unique.”

Firestone Walker’s annual vintage anniversary ales are among the most renowned and anticipated barrel-aged beers in the craft beer industry. Each anniversary ale is composed of multiple components, drawing on a diverse selection of brews aged in retired bourbon barrels. Each year, Brynildson enlists numerous friends in the Paso Robles winemaking community to assist with selecting the final blend. The 2012 release, XVI, will be the seventh release in the series.

The Lion, The Bear & The Brewmaster will take place on October 10, 2012, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Mile High Station. The cost is $75 per person, inclusive of food, anniversary beer samples and a Firestone Walker snifter glass. Availability is limited. For tickets, visit FirestoneBeer.com.
