Firestone Walker Will Open New L.A. Spot

Paso Robles, California based Firestone Walker Brewing will be expanding southward to Los Angeles. We are told that two buildings have been purchased there that will house a taproom and pilot brewing facility. The new build will also have a resource and learning center for aspiring brewers and home brewers.

This is the third location to be open by Firestone Walker since it was founded in 1996.  Aside from the facility in Paso Robles, the brewery opened the Barrelworks in Buellton.

The new facility should be open in late 2014.

Firestone Walker “Releases the Merkins” Sept 16

It is called the beer that almost wasn’t. Velvet Merkin, Firestone Walker’s oatmeal stout aged in Heaven Hill & Four Roses barrels will hit bottles for the first time this September.

The only time you have ever really ever this oddly named brew was at beer festivals, or special events. Firestone Walker says it has gained a cult like following. Brewmaster Matt Brynildson says [fans] have been bugging him for bottles for  a long time. Looks like he’s giving in to “beer” pressure. Interestingly, Velvet Merkin started as a simple component of an Anniversary Beer blend. Obviously Merkin shines quite well on its own. Fun fact: this release will be the lowest ABV beer in the Proprietor’s Reserve Series. You’ll know the non barrel aged base as Firestone Walker Velvet Merlin. Only after bourbon does this brew get the Merkin name.

Look for beer to release at a throw down at the Firestone Walker Barrelworks on September 14th. (Distribution release, 9/16)

Style: Imperial Oatmeal Stout (Barrel Aged, Bourbon)

Malts:  2-Row Pale, Roast Barley, English Dark Caramel, Medium Caramel, Carafa Malt, Oats (15%)

Availability: 22oz bombers, Boxed.

Firestone Walker Introduces Pivo Hoppy Pils

Firestone Walker introduces Pivo Pils – a West Coast take on the classic Bavarian style pilsner. The intent behind this brew was to take the traditional pallatte-cleansing pilsner then dry hop it with German hops in American craft tradition.

Lighter beer styles like pilsner have been hijacked by industrial lager beer in the United States, and it’s time for craft brewers to take it back. Pivo Hoppy Pils is our contribution to the cause.” -Matt Brynildson of Firestone Walker

Pivo Pils will launch in 6 packs starting May 15 2013 to select markets followed quickly by a more expanded draft availability.

Style: Pilsner
