Sam Talks Black & Red

Sam, the creative leader at Dogfish Head Brewing has given the world a bit more info on the draft only Black & Red release.  It’s minty, chocolatey, fruity & unexpected.  B&R wasn’t on DFH’s 2011 release schedule. It’s a fun surprise.

Black & Red is a velvety smooth dry-minted stout with a serious fruit problem! The huge portion of heavily roasted grains brings a rich, chocolaty character which contrasts it’s sweet fruity full-body. As you tilt your glass, you’ll notice that the black color you are perceiving is actually a very deep reddish hue and the rich creamy foam has a tinge of pink to it. Black & Red starts off roasted and warming with a robust mintiness from 100 lbs of organic mint (from our friends at Washington’s Green Grocer) added to the secondary fermentation and finishes out sweet and smooth. It’s Darn-right pudding-like in it’s depth an chewiness. Best enjoyed 6 ounces at a time from a sniffer in lieu of a banana split.

Black & Red is a dessert beer. It is sweet, minty, roasty & chocolate-ty. It is meant to be sipped from a snifter for sure, but for you mixologists it’s also yummy blended with a dry roasted stout, like our like our Chicory Stout or one of those Irish nitroginated wizzbangs. We’re also getting good reports from folks enjoying the Black & Red with a scoop of vanilla ice cream plopped right into the glass!

Style: American Stout
Availability: Draft only. Limited markets

10.5% ABV

Savor Flowers

Looks like there might beer some bottles of the Sam Adams/Dogfish Head collaboration for Savor – “Savor Flowers.”   The beautiful label carries a Brewer’s Association logo on for the backside of the bottle.   Pure speculation, the bottles will be distributed to the BA members, VIP attendees to Savor, and brewery employees.

Savor Flowers is brewed with dried red & white rose petals, plus 2 other kinds of roses.  The hops are experimental, known only by a name “369.”  As if the beer needed to be a bit MORE unique, this floral offering is aged in a special whiskey barrel dear to Jim Koch, one he aged a triple bock in back in the ’90s.

Total production is limited to 30 barrels.  Debuts at Savor in Washington D.C. in June.

10% ABV

The resulting beer will only see the light of day at Savor in Washington D.C. in June.  According to the Wall Street Journal the beer has a name – “Savor Flowers” as it’s brewed with dried red & white rose petals, plus 2 other kinds of roses.  The hops are experimental, known only by a name “369.”  As if the beer needed to be a bit MORE unique, this floral offering is aged in a special whiskey barrel dear to Jim Koch, one he aged a triple bock in back in the ’90s.  Food Republic is reporting that Koch also added “a tincture –or extraction – that he [Koch] has nicknamed WTF, which smells and tastes a lot like lavender.”  Later, this WTF was revealed to also contain hibiscus & jasmine.

Total production is only 30 barrels, and only the lucky few that got tickets to Savor (before or after the server meltdown) will get to try it.  <Food Republic>

RIP Brew Masters. Beer Gets Chippy

Beer is awfully dramatic lately.  Label lawsuits, name lawsuits, beer buying other beer, and the beer geeks lament. Fine.  Well over a month ago, a rumor of the untimely demise of Brew Masters on Discovery Channel featuring Dogfish Head was circulated.  I reached out to Discovery Channel, whom in turned called me back telling me that the show WAS NOT CANCELLED.  They were merely taking a breath, checking direction, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Here’s today.  A blog dubbed Beer & Whiskey Brothers stated it was cancelled, & maintained it was cancelled all along.  One of the same blogs writers bumped into Sam from Dogfish and asked the question – what’s up with Brew Masters.  Long story short, basically done he replied.

Ok.  Here’s where it gets hairy. Discovery states low viewership.  However there is something more complicated at work here.  Money.  Big Money.  We all saw the Blue Moon commericals during the first Brew Masters show.  Of course, that’s not considered “craft beer.”  Beer geeks came out in droves on Beer Advocate forums complaining and questioning why the commercial was placed there.  Sam of Dogfish Head even responded saying that the commercial annoyed him too.

Wrapping up the the issue, it seems like SAB Miller is a huge advertiser with Discovery.  It’s either the millions of dollars in advertising and the commericals stay, or Brew Masters.  Money wins.  Drinking isn’t easy.  Read the whole story <Beer & Whiskey Brothers>
