Founders Wins Alabama Bastard Fight

Alabama has officially lifted their ban on the “bastard” labels.  Recently, the states beverage control board banned Founders Brewing Co’s Dirty Bastard and Backwoods Bastard because the names of the beers were considered offensive.  That lead Founders to appeal the decision in April.

Yesterday, Founders announced on their Facebook page the good news (especially for those in Alabama):

Our Dirty Bastard and Backwoods Bastard labels have been approved in the state of Alabama. We’re excited to be able to share these Bastards with beer enthusiasts in the great Yellowhammer State!

That’s not the only battle raging recently.  Flying Dog Brewing (Frederick, MD) was recently denied the ability to sue the Michigan Liquor Control Board over the ban of their Raging Bitch IPA. Even though they are allowed to sell the beer in the state, the brewery believes that its 1st Amendment rights were violated and money was lost due to the short ban.

America Tweets More About Church Than Beer

If you are looking to Twitter to see some cultural differences in the United States, look no further.  FloatingSheep.org has already sorted that out for you. The website is the brainchild of various doctors of geography, who took to the task of aggregating info about two major cultural divides – The words: “beer” and “church.”

The website recently conducted a study to see which Americans tweet more about – beer or church.  As it turns out, it’s church. That answer was found by aggregating more than 10 million geotagged tweets across the United States from June 22 – June 29th, 2012.  17,686 tweets mentioned “church,” while 14,405 tweets were about “beer.”

As you can see from the website’s map, the southeast tweets more about church than anywhere else in the U.S. The most beer tweeting city?  San Francisco (191 to 46, church to beer). The most church tweeting city – Dallas, Texas (178 to 83). [FloatingSheep]

Brooklyn Gold Standard Arrives

Brooklyn’s Gold Standard Export Kellerbier is showing up on tap handles in the city. The draft only beer launched late April, available through early summer.

Brooklyn Gold Standard Export Kellerbier is here to channel those days when the land was green with beer gardens, and no one had yet uttered the P-word*. The title “Export” connotes a beer more robust than pilsner, while the word “Kellerbier” tells us that it’s unfiltered. Our malt is 100% floor-malted Bohemian barley, giving the beer a rich bready backbone. And Brooklyn Gold Standard is going to need a solid backbone to hold up all those snappy German Hallertau Perle, Hallertau Mittelfrueh and Czech Saaz hops that are leaping out of the glass. A long, cold lager fermentation makes it rich, but smooth. The big floral hop aroma is followed by refreshingly bold bitterness and beautiful rounded malt flavors.

Malts: Bohemian Hanka, 100% Floormalted, Czech Republic
Hops: Hallertau Perle and Hallertau Mittelfrueh (Germany), Saaz (Czech Republic)
Yeast: A proprietary lager strain, lent to us by our awesome pals at New Glarus Brewing of Wisconsin

6.2% ABV, 44 IBUS

Finch’s Threadless Hits Taps

Look for Finch’s Beer Co’s newest draft offering in Atlanta – Threadless IPA. The 16oz cans arrived over the past week, draft this week. This is a pretty special beer, as it’s a collaboration with Threadless T-Shirt Company. Last year, the brewery created a hoppy American IPA for Threadless, leading them to want to can the beer and share with the world.  One problem. Artwork was needed. Threadless took it to the people. 169 designs were submitted to be voted on. The above design was the clear winner.

Style: IPA
Availability: 16 oz cans, Draft

6% ABV
