DuClaw and Ska Battle for Euphoria

Ska Brewing makes Euphoria. DuClaw Brewing makes Euforia. These will not both hold true for much longer. Ska Brewing has filed a petition at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, asking them to revoke DuClaw Brewing’s rights to the names Euphoria and Euforia on beers. Ska has been using Euphoria since 2005 and claims they should have ‘common law’ rights to the name while DuClaw obtained the rights to use Euphoria in 2009 and then Euforia in 2012. Neither brewery can comment at this time.

F.U. Sandy Generates $45,000 for Charity

After completely selling out of F. U. Sandy, Flying Fish is pleased to announce that they have raised $45,000 to be distributed to local charities benefitting Hurricane Sandy victims. After accepting nominations via social media, Habitat for Humanity’s New Jersey chapters, Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund, and Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey will each be receiving $15,000. When the beer was launched in February, Flying Fish was adamant about 100% of profit from sales of this beer be donated and are excited to follow through.

“New Jersey is one tight-knit state, and our fans and friends proved that with their overwhelming response to this special beer. From our wholesalers to the local bars and restaurants that made sure no keg went unsold to the dedicated drinkers who nominated our three exceptional beneficiaries, it’s obvious that NJ residents are committed to bringing their communities back, better than ever, after the storm.” Gene Muller, Flying Fish founder and president.

A Billionaire Amongst Craft Brewers?

Forbes Magazine recently published their list of billionaires and wouldn’t you know a craft brewer made the cut! Dick Yuengling, who bought out his father in 1985, was listed with a net worth of $1.3 billion. When he purchased the company Yuengling was barely making $6 million a year and were counting their barrel production in the thousands.

28 years later Yuengling boasts 2.5 million barrels a year and revenues in the millions while distributing to just 14 states. The company very stubbornly chooses to remain private regardless of competition and acquisition offers. Anyone who’s been to the Yuengling brewery will tell you that they do anything but boast their wealth and are some of the most humble people you will meet.

2013 Brewers Association Guidelines Adds Two Styles

The Brewers Association has released their  2013 Beer Style Guidelines. 2013 version defines 142 styles of beer, up 2 styles from last year.

This year, Adambier and Grätzer styles were added for the first time ever. Both are historic pre-Reinheitsgebot styles that are making a slow revival among U.S. and international brewers. Adambier and Grätzer are historically smoky ales, with the former thriving in and around Dortmund, Germany, and the latter brewed primarily in Poland.

Also, guidelines were changed for American wheat ale “…  by which all-wheat grists are used in the brewing process.”
