US Breweries Surpasses 1,700

The Brewers Association’s Erin Glass has a tough job of keep roll of all the breweries in America.  Seems like almost daily a brewery opens, closes, or is planned.  It was announced over the weekend that breweries in the United States has surpassed 1,700.  That’s a lot of beer.  If each one of those breweries releases just 5 beers, you are already a beer beer behind.   So get drinking.  From Brewersassociation.org

The Brewers Association’s Membership Coordinator and Brewery Detective Erin Glass keeps an eye on brewery openings, closings, transitions and breweries in planning. With so much interest in craft brewing today, there is a lot more detective work and a large number of calls and emails to breweries in planning, those on the cusp and those recently opened.

Many startups join the Brewers Association during the planning phase to access our resources and the expertise of the network and remain members after becoming operational. U.S. operational brewery membership is now at 1,218. Total brewery membership, when international breweries, contract brewing companies and breweries in planning are added, is 1,619.

WHAT:

Presented by the Brewers Association (organizers of the Great American Beer Festival®), SAVOR, the benchmark of beer and food events, is a must-attend happening for beer lovers and foodies alike.

Attendees will sample craft beers from 72 small and independent craft brewers who team up with a duo of expert chefs to pair each craft beer with delicious savory and sweet dishes. Educational salons and private tasting salons will provide additional opportunities for attendees to interact with some of America’s most talented craft brewers and chefs.

WHEN:

Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4, 2011 7:30 — 11:00 PM

WHERE:

National Building Museum
401 F Street NW
Washington, D.C. 20001

WHY:

SAVOR’s rapid growth is strong evidence of the public’s appetite for craft beer along with food that complements and accentuates this artfully brewed beverage. In 2010, the event sold out in less than one day, which is why SAVOR has expanded to two nights for 2011. This year promises to be another memorable event for attendees looking to taste the best that America’s small and independent craft brewers have to offer.

U.S. operational brewery membership is now at 1,218. Total brewery membership, when international breweries, contract brewing companies and breweries in planning are added, is 1,619.

The count is at 1,701 operating breweries in the U.S. There are 9 percent more breweries in the U.S. than a year ago. As I blow the dust off the historical records, it appears that there were 1,751 breweries in 1900 and 1,498 in 1910. So we have more breweries than we have since around 1905. My resource for these data points is The Register of United States Breweries 1876-1976 (compilers Friedrich and Bull). There certainly are a lot more diverse brewing styles being offered today, particularly by craft brewers, and I’m betting quality is far greater now than then.

At the end of March during the general session of the Craft Brewers Conference, I will present the number of breweries that operated for some or all of 2010, which will be a higher number than the current count, as it will include breweries that closed in 2010. Another interesting number will be the breweries opening count.

There’s a song in my head now. AMERICA F#&* YEAH! Cheers.

New Belgium Expanding Distribution

New Belgium Brewing is expanding their distribution to Virgina, Maryland, & Washington D.C.   With this expansion, that brewings New Belgium’s territory to 29 states.  One of the largest, if not THE largest by a craft brewer in America.

The last large expansion by NB was in 2009 when 5 more states were added.  New Belgium has stated that they wanted to be very careful when they expand, as they want the brewery’s supply to keep up with demand.

Estimated Target Date: Fall (September) 2011

Meet Sunday Sales Supporter Chip Rogers

This is the blogging form of a retraction.   Chip Rogers actually supports Sunday sales – and even co authored the bill.  The response I received on Sunday Sales supporters mentioned Senator Rogers as an opponent.  I spoke with his office this morning and found out otherwise.  My apologies for that.  Senator Rogers WAS a part of the closed door meeting that killed S.B. 10 from moving forward.  I wish I was a fly on the wall in that meeting.

Below is his contact information.  Perhaps a little extra encouragement could bring this bill to a vote this session.
