George Washington’s “Small Beer” Brewed Again

A beer George Washington drank before sending the English packing for good has been brewed again.  Among the collected writing of America’s first president was a handwritten recipe for “small beer” from 1757.  The New York Public Library is in possession of this recipe.  It was in a notebook from when he was a Colonel in Virginia. The recipe reads:

Take a large Siffer [Sifter] full of Bran Hops to your Taste. — Boil these 3 hours then strain out 30 Gall[ons] into a cooler put in 3 Gall[ons] Molasses while the Beer is Scalding hot or rather draw the Melasses into the cooler & St[r]ain the Beer on it while boiling Hot. let this stand till it is little more than Blood warm then put in a quart of Yea[s]t if the Weather is very Cold cover it over with a Blank[et] & let it Work in the Cooler 24 hours then put it into the Cask — leave the bung open till it is almost don[e] Working — Bottle it that day Week it was Brewed.

The recipe resembles a porter, no doubt drawing from English roots.  Shmaltz/Coney Island Brewing will be recreating this original recipe for The New York Public Library’s 100th Anniversary.  Only 15 gallons will be created, with half staying true to the original recipe & half using malted barley instead of molasses. The name? “Fortitude’s Founding Father Brew”. Washington was a well known beer drinker, & home brewer. It is mentioned that upon British troops leaving New York, Washington celebrated with a pint at Bull’s Head Tavern.  <MSNBC, Dailymail.co.uk>

Brooklyn Brewing Goes Barreling In Sweden

This is more on the side of – Ain’t It Cool News, then a piece on a beer you will see in the United States.  Recently Garrett Oliver, brewmaster of Brooklyn Brewery traveled to Sweden with his entire brewing team.  In tow was 150 Heaven Hill bourbon barrels.  The team was there to celebrate the 175 Anniversary of Carnegie Porter, first brewed in 1836.  Heaven Hill Distillery is based in Bardstown, Kentucky and their barrels are frequently being used in barrel aged beers.

While in Sweden, Oliver completed in a friendly Beer vs. Wine competition (in which the brewery’s blog says he won!) & was interviewed by local media.  Check out more at <BrooklynBlog>

Bolita Updated, Shelves Again Soon

Cigar City Brewing’s Bolita Double Nut Brown Ale is the next beer in the breweries artwork overhaul.  The it’s a seasonal release, with varying releases dates. Bolita is a lottery that originated in Cuba, and became popular in Florida. 100 numbered balls were placed in a bag, and bets were taken on which number would be drawn.  Variations of Bolita include – Bourbon Aged, Mayan Espresso, Coconut Aged, & more.

About Bolita:
Bolita means “little ball” but profits from the illegal lottery games were anything but little.  Our Bolita is a Double Northern English-style brown ale that has a complex malt forward character with notes of chocolate, toffee, and hints of roasted nuts.

Style: English Brown Ale

Full Press Release

(Grand Rapids, MI) — Founders Brewing Co. Vice President/Director of Marketing Dave Engbers announced today that his GrandRapids brewery will begin selling 750 milliliter bottles of specialty beers–dubbed the “Backstage Series”–this summer.

Engbers said part of the almost $7 million expansion to the brewery, which increased capacity from 28,000 barrels to nearly 50,000 barrels, includes a state of the art bottling line that allows them the flexibility to bottle and package 12oz as well as large format 750ml bottles.

The first “Backstage Series” release is sure to put a smile on the face of Founders fans. “We haven’t produced this product in over four years and people have been begging for it–so this is the perfect time to bring Blushing Monk back to market.” Blushing Monk is a decadent Belgian Raspberry Ale that was last produced in 2007, and is still highly sought after.

The company is not revealing the entire lineup, but Engbers said it would consist of many of the “popular one-offs” that have been offered in the taproom over the years and have become favorites. “I think part of what people love about Founders, besides our beer, is that we listen to what they are saying,” says President Mike Stevens. “With our new line, now we can offer them more of what they’ve been asking for.”

The company expects to release two or three in the series this year.

Founders Brewing Company opened their doors in 1997 with the vision of creating some of the most unique craft beer in the world. Today, Founders has a loyal following with several beers lauded nationally and internationally as award winners in their respective categories. In 2009, they were ranked the second fastest growingbrewery in the United States, and they are currently rated the second highest brewery in the world by ratebeer.com.

Founders Brewing Company, 235 Grandville Avenue SW in downtown Grand Rapids, is a proud member of the Michigan Brewers Guild. www.michiganbrewersguild.org.

A Dark Steam Beer Called Black Vapor

Sierra Nevada Black Vapor

Looks like Sierra Nevada is brewing a bit more of Black Vapor.  Vapor was/is a draft only release that Sierra brewed with the people at Briess Malts.  It debuted at the Craft Brewers conference in San Francisco, California.  The style is California Common, a “steam beer.” I use quotes because Anchor Brewing has trademarked the steam beer name.  Commons are American lagers, originating back to a time where refrigeration was basically non existent.  A lager yeast that fermented at warmer temperatures was used.  Vapor is a bit of a hybrid, using midnight wheat malt & lager year.

Style: California Common
Hops: Magnum, Northern Brewer (Bitter).  Aurora, Experimental (Aroma).
Malts: Midnight Wheat, Briess Pilsner, Caramel 40, Bonlander Munich
Yeast: California Lager
Availability: Draft only, currently limited to California.

5% ABV, 38 IBUs
