Witness The Chickness

Yesterday, it was Molson Coors planning to make a “non bloating” lager for the female demographic.   Meet another female focused beer – Chick Lager.  Chick Brewing asks the question “Since when is Chick a bad thing?”    This light lager also seeks to relieve you of that “bloaty” feeling by being lightly carbonated.  5% of sales goes to women interests groups.  Chick Brewing is based in Maryland.  The brewery will start bottling next week.

Shazz of Chick Brewing:

Hi.  My name is Shazz.  I’m the founder and owner of Chick Brewing. Let me tell you the cool story of how Chick Beer happened. One day, I was in my local store looking for an interesting beer to take home, and I thought “Isn’t it strange that out of hundreds of beers, none appeal directly to women?”

As a woman and mother of five daughters, I thought  ”Well, isn’t it about time that someone created a beer for us?”  I went home and did some research, and found that women drink 25% of all the beer consumed in the U.S. That’s almost 750 MILLION cases a year!”

The idea to create a brand of beer specifically for women kept stirring in my brain and my heart.  I thought about it night and day, and decided that I really wanted to be able to give women a choice that reflected their tastes, and was female-centric.

After two years of effort, Chick Beer is my answer.  This lovely beer is a light lager, with low carbs and just 97 calories.  The taste leans toward the smoothness of malt over the dry bitterness of hops  It’s the taste that women prefer.  You’re going to love it.

The idea for the name “Chick Beer” was obvious. For years, men have dismissing lighter beers as chick beers, something “not on par with what real men drink”.  My take on this: “Since when is Chick a bad thing?

We love Chick Flicks, Chick Lit, and now we can love Chick Beer!!  Enjoy!

SweetWater Goes Solar

SweetWater Brewing is adding solar panels during their expansion.  The new panels will be capable of enough output to power 22 homes…

Staying true to its environmentally friendly roots, the expansion will be topped off with the largest private commercial solar
installation in Atlanta according to Empower Energy Technology, the company spearheading the efforts. The building’s new 157kWp
solar panel roof system will be visible from passing Marta trains and the Buford Spring Connector that takes commuters to and from
I‐85 and I‐75 and the adjacent Beltline.  The first‐year output of the system will be 234,684 kWh (AC) and under typical weather
conditions, that’s enough electrical generation to power nearly 22 average US homes, or offset a nice chunk of the power the
brewery would have been pulling off of the grid. Don’t worry tree huggers and beer lovers, you CAN have your beer and drink it too!

Full Press Release

ATLANTA — SweetWater Brewing Company might be a local craft brewery based in Atlanta, but their tasty brews and unique
business style have put their name on the map nationally, recently recognized as the No. 27 largest craft brewery in the U.S. by the
Brewers Association. To accommodate the growing demand for their deliciousness, the Atlanta digs are in the midst of an expansion.
Remember those great demo pictures from earlier this month? With building permits in hand, the expansion is underway and on
track to be completed in November 2011 and fully functioning by January 2012.  Of course, this means more beer and some state‐of‐
the‐art bells and whistles.  SweetWater Brewery will not only quadruple their existing 26,000 sq. foot facility to 114,000 sq. feet but
also add an additional special event space, a packaging hall, quality assurance lab, office space and another outdoor entertaining
area all while being connected to the existing brewery and tasting room.

For patrons that have visited SweetWater during its tours and tastings Wednesday through Saturday, the expanded outdoor area
and event space will be much appreciated.  The brewery’s tasting room is usually overflowing with, local fans and craft beer tourists
eager to taste the newest limited edition Dank Tank Series, Catch &’ Release seasonal beers, or enjoy one of the lip smackin’ beers
from their year round lineup. It is not just the space in Atlanta that is getting a sizeable upgrade; new equipment in the expanded Q
&A lab and packaging hall will allow SweetWater’s brewers to dial in the best product possible, experiment with different brews and
increase overall brewery quality and efficiency. The existing capacity at the brewery is currently 100,000 barrels, in 2010 77,000
barrels were produced and this year they are on pace to brew well more than 90,000 barrels.  Once all the new toys are in place the
capacity will reach 400,000 barrels of beer per year.  Y’all got some drinkin’ to do!

“We’ve been getting requests for our beers from retailers across the country, but we are not planning on moving into new
geographic markets until after the expansion is complete and we are able keep up with the demand in Atlanta and throughout the
southeast,” says SweetWater founder and Big Kahuna Freddy Bensch. “For us it has always been about serving our community with
the best quality beer possible, and these additions will allow us to continue to produce the kickass beers our customers have grown
to love and expect from us.”

Molson Coors Clear Beer For Women

Molson Coors

Molson Coors is announcing a new beer targeting female drinkers today. The beer — Animee, hopes to capture more of the lady beer drinkers.

Animee translated to English as “motivated”, is a light lager developed to be “bloat resistant. The research alone spanned 2 years and over a million dollars.

Get this… the beer is clear. Like Sprite or 7-Up, (or Crystal Pepsi), the beer is clear. There will apparently be 2 flavor variations — rose & citrus.

This lager will debut in England first. Coors states the female drinking population is just 17%, where in the U.S. it’s over 25% [BrandRepublic]

Pyramid Hefe’d Up. Starts Test Batches

Pyramid Hefe'd Up

There’s just no pleasing some people.  Or maybe there is.  Pyramid Breweries has issued a press release in regards to their most popular beer – Hefeweizen.  Hefe was introduced in 1993, and then renamed to “Haywire” Hefe in 2008 – an act that the brewery feels was bad one.  It changed peoples view of the beer, and moved away from the history and tradition surrounding the beer.

Realizing this misstep, the brewery will be changing the name back to Hefeweizen, and giving the packaging a facelift.  This will happen before the end of the year.

Also, the used brewery in Seattle will become a brew site for test batches. <SeattleBeerNews>

Press Release (via WashingtonBeerBlog)

We Hefe’d Up!

SEATTLE, WA–In response to customer feedback–Pyramid Hefeweizen will return to its roots and original name–officially dropping the name “Haywire” from its packaging.

“Moving away from the tradition that made us great was a mistake,” said Ryan Daley, brand manager for Pyramid. “Our consumers connected with our Pacific Northwest heritage and craft beer brewing tradition. When we changed our Pyramid Hefeweizen packaging and name, they felt disconnected. Our beer no longer reflected our rich history.”

Pyramid Hefeweizen was first introduced in 1993 as an authentic, unfiltered American-style hefeweizen. Brewed with pale barley, wheat and caramel malts and nugget and liberty hops, Pyramid Hefeweizen has a 5.2 percent alcohol by volume (ABV) and rates 18 on the international bittering units (IBU) scale. In 2004 and 2009, Pyramid Hefeweizen won a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) and numerous international honors at the World Beer Cup.

In 2008, Pyramid Breweries added the name “Haywire” and changed its packaging to differentiate from other Hefeweizen brands and attract new beer drinkers. The beer remained the same.

“By moving away from our roots, people viewed us differently. It didn’t take us long to figure out that we needed to change,” added Daley. “Our consumers are at the heart of everything we do and we intend on listening moving forward.”

Pyramid Hefeweizen packaging also will get a facelift.

“We’ve made some minor packaging changes right away but we will be talking with beer drinkers and unveiling a new design later this year that is more reminiscent of the tradition and heritage of the Pyramid brand and the Pacific Northwest,” said Daley.

Pyramid Hefeweizen is available in six, 12 and 24-pack bottles, and 12-pack cans at grocery, convenience and drug stores throughout the country. In addition, it is also available in 22 ounce bottles, on draft and 12 ounce cans that hit store shelves this summer.

“Beer lovers have enjoyed the smooth flavor of Pyramid Hefeweizen since we first began brewing it in the early 90s,” said Ryan Pappe, lead brewer, Pyramid Breweries, Seattle. “The guys at the brewery are lifting their glasses as we return to our roots and honor the heritage of Hefe.”
