Nebraska’s Rare Inception

Nebraska Brewing Toasted Barn

One to add to the rare beer, “how do I get it” list – Nebraska Brewing’s Toasted Barn.  The brewery released details about the Inception Series, their newest barrel aged beer.

We bottle the first of what will be our extremely limited edition barrel aged experiments which we are calling The Inception Series.

Why Inception?  Well, it’s pretty simple really.  These are 1 or 2 oak barrels of something we felt was worthy of the time and effort necessary to head down a lenghty path of maturation and flavor enhancements.  This is our unveiling and it may be the start of something very nice indeed.

Will they make it to Reserve Series?  Maybe.  Will they ever be made again?  Maybe.  Will we even bottle all of the barrel aged experiments we have in the pipeline?  Maybe (I think you get the picture at this point)

We’ll decide later but at this stage, we do know that they are truly something special.  Small batch, limited edition barrel aged efforts.  Toasted Barn is our first so watch our Newsletter or Facebook for additional information on the Series and the beer itself.

These beers will only be available in our brewpub.

PRESS RELEASE: Karl Strauss Boardwalk Black Rye

Karl Strauss Black Rye Belgian IPA Arriving Soon..

(San Diego, CA) — As a local brewery in Pacific Beach, Karl Strauss is giving a nod to life at the boardwalk with its latest release, Boardwalk Black Rye. Conjuring images of a dark ocean and cool breezes, Boardwalk Black Rye is a spicy take on an American Black Ale with an intense citrus hoppiness and complex roasty finish.

American Black Ales are a fairly recent addition to the craft beer world. These beers are similar to IPA’s in flavor, but with the addition of roasted and dark malts for an added layer of depth and malt complexity. Karl Strauss kicked their interpretation up a notch with the addition of cara rye and chocolate rye malts for a spiciness that complements the floral notes from the Athanum hops. “This beer has a lot going on, but in a very balanced way,” says Paul Segura, Karl Strauss Brewmaster. “It starts with a bright, citrus hop profile, then you start to get the spiciness from the rye, and the finish has a really pleasant dry, roast character.”

Boardwalk Black Rye is the final addition to the Karl’s Coastal Reserve series. In late 2009, Karl Strauss debuted the Coastal Reserve series to showcase its more innovative, west coast inspired hop-forward beers. The series of four beers kicked-off with Big Barrel Double IPA, followed by Whistler Imperial Pils, Blackball Belgian IPA, and is now completed by Boardwalk Black Rye.

Boardwalk Black Rye comes in at 8% ABV, with enough alcohol to support the bold hop and malt flavors. “The brewers here at Karl Strauss are huge hopheads, so the Coastal Reserve Series has been a really fun outlet for us to show our creativity,” says Segura. A limited draft release and 800 cases of 22oz bombers will be available across Southern California beginning early August. For more information, visit www.karlstrauss.com. Share it. Cheers.

Stats:
8.0% ABV
80 SRM
80 IBU

Tagline:
A spicy black rye ale with a robust West Coast hop profile.

Label:
When the sun goes down past Crystal Pier, the postcard view of the Pacific fades into the dark. As the tourists head off down the Boardwalk, a distinctly local vibe returns to PB. Boardwalk Black Rye is a spicy black ale with a hop profile that’s pure West Coast. Black and caramelized rye malts add complex spicy and roasted notes, while three massive additions of Ahtanum hops provide the vibrant floral aroma and citrus hop character of a Double IPA. Keep Boardwalk out of the cellar, this hoppy offering is best enjoyed fresh.

A Sad Day. MGD 64 Lemonade Pulled From Market

MGD 64 Death

I’m sure you are all quite sad to hear – Miller has killed MGD 64 Lemonade line.  In January, Miller announced they were adding flavored variations of the “64” line, aimed at low calorie drinkers, and summer beer drinking settings.

Today Miller called takesies backsies on the whole venture.

Winning in beer requires testing the bounds of the market with innovation,” Ed McBrien, president of sales wrote in an email Tuesday to MillerCoors distributors. “With that commitment, however, comes a recognition that not every innovation will succeed. That is the case with MGD 64 Lemonade, so we have decided to discontinue this line extension.

The remaining product will be bought back by the company.  No word on how much the failed venture will cost. [BusinessJournal]

Belgo Gets Upgraded

New Belgium BELGO

New Belgium Brewing is adding Belgo IPA to year round status, joining the “Explore” series.  (i.e. from 22oz to 12oz/6pks.)  Well received of course, the beer got a label update, and new social status.  Per the NB’s blog:

Sometime last year (maybe September?) we here at New Belgium HQ released a Lips of Faith beer called Belgo IPA.  It was great, a hoppy IPA with a Belgian yeast, it offered up a wonderful juxtaposition of flavor, the hop bite of an IPA and the fruity esters of a traditional Belgian style.  A floral, citrusy zing opened the sip and then the nice fruit tone of the yeast came in swinging.  Belgo finished clean and dry and it asked (nay, begged) you to take another sip.  This beer developed a huge following and the people were clamoring for it.  We here at HQ saw this as an exciting new opportunity to bring out something new and more on the full time side of the spectrum.

This is why I’m talking about Belgo IPA now… it is coming back, with a vengeance (like Bruce Willis in the third installment of the Die Hard series).  This beer is going to be the newest offering in the Explore Series (sitting comfortably next to Abbey, Trippel. Mothership Wit and Ranger IPA), which means full time (all year), and 12oz bottles.  Holy smokes!  The new (non-22oz) package also means that the awesome Belgo IPA disco ball will be front and center.  This is some of my favorite art that NBB has ever done.  Looking at the bottle just makes you want to turn on the disco ball affixed spot lights, crank up the turn table and party.  It screams late night fun with dancing and yelling and tight pants.
