BUDWEISER: You Can’t Use The Name Bud. In Anything.

Budweiser doesn’t take too kindly to the use of  “Bud” in the name of any beverage.  Budweiser recently targeted an Argentinean wine maker Budini over the use of Bud in the name.

Budweiser sent a cease & desist letter to the Budini’s importer to Vine Connections based in San Francisco demanding they stop using the name.  Instead of fighting a legal battle over trademarks, the importer changed the wine’s U.S. name to Bodini.  Budini is actually an acronym for Based Upon Dreams Of Individuals, Not Institutions.  The new name keeps the acronym alive – Based On Dreams, instead of Upon.

Ed Lehrman, a partner in Vine Connections:

“The fact that they (Anheuser-Busch) lay claim to these letters for all alcoholic beverages seems a little unfair considering the lack of consumer confusion in this case.”

There’s truth to that.  You would be hard pressed to find a case of brand confusion.  The best part? Vine Connections is donating the money it WOULD have spent paying fighting Budweiser’s obviously very bored lawyers.  The money benefits the Dominio del Plata Scholarship Foundation, dedicated to providing educational and recreational opportunities to the children of Bodini’s (Budini’s) employees in Mendoza, Argentina.  [Huffington Post, Washington Post]

Saranac Launching Chocolate Lager, Bringing Back Big Moose Ale

UPDATE: A reader has pointed out a correction: Chocolate Amber and Chocolate Lager are 2 different beers.

It took some a bit of focused effort to sort through the Saranac portfolio to find sort out last release dates for seasonals.  Chocolate Lager & Big Moose Ale look to be back on the calendar again.

Chocolate Lager IS different from Chocolate Amber Lager.

Saranac chocolate lager is a sinfully delicious deep amber lager made with the purest cacao from Belize.  Our brewers looked far and wide for highest quality cacao to create a smooth chocolaty taste that only comes from the most exclusive cacao plants.  We use the roasted seeds of these decadent plants and perfectly paired them with caramel malt and German Hallertau hops to create a malty chocolate sweet flavor.  You’ll love savoring this beer with your holiday foods or on its own for a delicious treat.

Style: Dark Lager
Hops: Hallertau
Malts: Caramel
Cacao Nibs

Big Moose Ale is an American Pale Ale headed back to shelves again soon.  According to Saranac, Big Moose last saw bottles in 2009.

Saranac Big Moose Ale is the perfect brew for a cold Adirondack winter night.  This full-flavored ale is  triple dry hopped with specialty citra, centennial and cascade hops to give you a vibrant citrusy hop aroma.  The bold hop character is balanced by malt sweetness from English pale and caramel malts to produce a lusciously crisp flavor. We don’t call it “Big Moose” for nothing!

Style: American Pale Ale
Hops: Citra, Centennial, Cascade
Malts: English pale, Caramel

Schlafly Partners With Backpocket Brewing

Schlafly Brewing (St. Louis, MO) is expanding.  In order to do so, they are partnering with a new brewery in Iowa called Backpocket Brewery.  The construction of the 25,000 barrel brewery will begin soon.  The brewing activities will be headed up by Jacob Simmons, a previous employee of Schlafy from 2006-2007.

The new Backpocket brewery will share characteristics with the Schlafly Bottleworks brewery.  They will have a beautiful 30 bbl brewhouse, fermentation vessels of similar design, and state of the art bottling equipment.  Jacob has really done a great job to get the brewery designed and the project moving forward.

….To uphold the high standards of our beer quality, Schlafly will recruit a new team member. Working for the quality assurance team, this Iowa-based employee will also promote beer in the area. This is a very exciting time for us at Schlafly Beer and we look forward to meeting lots of new friends in Iowa for years to come.

The partnership will allow Schlafly to grow more in the midwest.  It is also important to note, that Schlafly will have no ownership state in Backpocket Brewing.  The facility is scheduled for completion in summer, 2012.  [Schlafly]

Just recently, Schlafly also announced a Tennessee partnership with Blackstone Brewing.  Blackstone will be brewing beer for Schlafly later in 2011.
