Instead of just waiting for Sierra to make a decision, Bearden Beer Market held a rally. They are sending a message to Sierra that they are wanted in the Volunteer State. “Bring big green to Blount County Rally” was held yesterday. Everyone wore green. [VolunteerTV]
A new one for New Belgium Brewing’ s Lips Of Faith series – “Prickly Passion Saison”. The saison makes use of a French yeast, and prickly pear fruit and passion fruit. The prickly pear (seen below) grows on a cactus, with a flavor described somewhere between bubblegum and watermelon. Widmer featured it in their Prickly Pear Braggot a little over a year ago.
Label: Peter Picked a prickly pear and paired it with a passion fruit. “Perfect! Pitch It In!” He proclaimed. Now we have this pleasing prickly passion saison brewed with fruit juices and French saison yeast to our brewmasters picking.
Style: Saison Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft. Arrival: TBA
Cigar City Brewing’s Tocobaga is getting a little 12oz love. . Tocobaga is a hoppy red ale dry hopped with citra, and the brainchild of assistant brewer Tim Ogden. The brewery recently held an artwork contest for the label seen above, that was announced in June. This is Eric Swanson’s entry. Previously 750ml bottles.
Label: The Tocobaga Indians lived off of the bounty of Tampa Bay for hundreds of years before being discovered by the Spanish in the 1500’s. They were potters, tool makers and the only Florida native Indians to grow corn. The large platform mounds they built are still with us today, with one of the largest found in Philippe Park in Safety Harbor, Florida. Climb to the top, and with a little imagination, you can see Tamp as they did. Today Cigar City Brewing honors this native spirit with Tocobaga Red Ale. A deep-colored amber ale with an abundance of hop flavor and aromas balanced with a subtle caramel malt sweetness in the finish. We believe if the Tocobaga were here today they would join us in raising a glass to the bay we call home.
Style: Red Ale Hops: Citra Availability: 12oz bottles, 750ml bottles, Draft. 7.2% ABV
As mentioned on BSJ before, 21st Amendment & Ninkasi Brewing have been working on a canned collaboration that was yet to be named – until now. The beer is called “Special Edition.” A few weeks ago I got to sit down with Shaun O’Sullivan of 21A and we talked about this beer over well, beers. This is going to be one awesome looking can.
About Special Edition:
This collaboration is born out of friendship. Shaun O’Sullivan and Ninkasi’s Jamie Floyd used to work together at Steelhead Brewing Company in San Francisco. Each one has gone on to found very successful brewing company’s, but the respect for each others work is very evident.
The forthcoming brew is an old ale — but as Shaun O’Sullivan puts it — “there’s nothing old about it.” Each of the duo have brewed a version of the base old ale recipe before. Shaun took bronze with it as Fort Pointe Olde Ale at GABF in 1997. What’s not so old about it? Brand new hop styles and speciality ingredients of course. The Shaun and Jamie used Falconer Flight hops, a young blend of some of the best aromatic hops in the U.S. made by Hopunion to honor legendary homebrewer Glen Hay Falconer. California dates give the old ale added flavor and complexity.
The ale will be canned as a part of 21A’s Insurrection Series with Monk’s Blood & Hop Crisis. It has a World War II theme, echoing “The Big 3 Alliance” — Russia, England & the U.S. banding together to defeat nazi Germany. This new alliance in a can teams up Ninkasi, 21A and you, the drinker to fight the “bigger” element. [Think large beer.] The cans will look like 1940′s newspapers. Expect this beer by year’s end.
Style: Old Ale brewed with Cali dates
Availability: 4pks cans, Draft. Distributed through 21A’s network
Troegs Brewing’s new digs on Hershey Park Drive, Hershey PA is on schedule for opening. The location aka “T2” saw the delivery of new fermentation tanks on Wednesday.
If all goes well, T2 will be open in October. The brewery is currently located in downtown Harrisburg. (Cross the railroad tracks, you’re there.) The new space gives Troegs some much needed room to breathe, and the Paxton street location is small. Hershey will allow for more tours, more capacity, larger taproom/growler space, and giftshop. Rogue Maple Bacon Porter & A Doughnut World Record
Rogue Brewing will be bringing you Voodoo Doughnut – a maple bacon porter. Yeah, it’s what is sounds like. Bacon. Vanilla, maple. But no hops? The label says no. Voodoo Doughnuts boasts some fantastic looking doughnut offerings that would put Homer Simpson in a coma. Voodoo just broke the world record for the largest box of doughnuts, at a whopping (and very appropriate) 666 lbs!
I’m sure the beer is a base porter (brewed w/ hops of course) and the tasty editions. Would love to know the hops that go well with bacon and maple.
