Urkontinent: A Google/Dogfish Techie Collaboration

Urkontinent Google/Dogfish Collaboration arrives this winter.  The beer is a Belgian Dubbel built on feedback.  It’s a techie collaboration.  The video explains how the beer was designed and conceived, getting feedback from all over the world.

From Dogfish:
URKontinent is brewed in the style of a Belgian Dubbel. It begins with Pilsner, Munich and Chocolate Malts and Belgian Dark Candi syrup. Then we add unique ingredients from around the world. Wattleseed from Australia imparts a chocolate, coffee, and hazelnut taste to the beer. Toasted Amaranth from South America gives it an earthy, grainy flavor and a little additional roast flavor. Green Rooibos from Africa contributes a floral aroma and slight astringency. Myrica Gale from Europe supplements the bitterness from minimal hopping. Hive Plex Honey from California adds a subtle sweetness while maintaining the dry finish. The careful combination of all these ingredients creates a complex dark Belgian style ale with wonderful coffee and chocolate covered cherry flavors. The roastiness of the malt and wattleseed melds with the fruity esters from the yeast, the floral notes from the rooibos, and the malty yet dry signature of a Belgian Dubbel. Perfect to enjoy with friends as the weather begins to cool.

The Legal Side Of Beer. Boston Beer Co. Sues Anchor

Boston Beer Company (The Sam Adams folks) are suing Anchor Brewing.  Knee jerk question. Why would two breweries about as far from each other as two breweries can be in the United States sue each other?  A little thing called a non-compete clause.  Basically – one of the ex-Boston Beer Execs can’t go work for a competing company.  Now another question.  Does Anchor qualify?

BSJ Legal Dude Matt Crouse (@TheReal_MCrouse)

This seems like a complicated situation for Boston Beer.  On one hand, they had the non-compete agreement with Hausner which would prevent him from working with a competitor for a certain amount of time following his employment with Boston Beer.  But I question what the definition of the “Better Beer” category encompasses.  That appears to be a very broad term which could be interpreted many different ways and it all depends on how the judge in the case construes its meaning.  My personal feeling is that Boston Beer may have a hard time defending the validity of the non-compete agreement.

Oskar Blues Honey Badger Special For GABF

Oskar Blues Brewing (Lyon, CO) has a special release in honor of GABF this year – Honey Badger.  Just like the Not Safe For Work video below…

This nasty little ale is made with Crisp Maris Otter pale malt, Gambrinus Honey Malt, roasted barley, chocolate malt and dark crystal malt along with a heaping, meaty dose of Oskar Blues home smoked malt (no kidding; there’s meat in it) and generously hopped with Columbus all the way through the boil. A huge dollop of Lyons Local Madhava Wildflower Honey at the end of the boil takes it up a notch. Honey Badger don’t care; he just drinks the s**t up. Your nose will be attacked with a plume of cherry wood while your palate is tsunamied with rich chocolatey-caramel flavors and campfire smoke.  Served at locally at Oskar Blues Home Made Liquids & Solids (Longmont) and Grill & Brew (Lyons) with an OB Hops & Heifers Farm meat stick.   About 6% ABV

Phoenix Ale Brewery Open For Business

The Phoenix Ale Brewery hoisted its sign and opened its doors to the public for the first time this morning.  Located 3 miles east of downtown Phoenix, the brewery, bottling facility, offices, and visitor center sit on a little over one acre of land right on the Phoenix Metro rail system.  The brewery will hold tours weekdays at 4pm and weekends at 2pm and there will be tastings and growler purchases available.  The shop at the brewery will be open from 12pm-5pm on weekdays and 12pm-3pm on weekends.

The Phoenix Ale Brewery is owned by partners George Hancock, who founded Pyramid Breweries, and Greg Fretz, 15 year beer salesman. John Donehower will be the head brewer.  The new brewery will specialize in traditional English style ales brewed with only the finest ingredients and water purified on site.  The annual brewing capacity of this facility is 4,800 barrels, but is designed to expand to 25,000 barrels.  Plans are also in the works for a restaurant and pub to be built at the same site in late 2012.
