New Belgium, Cheesesteaks, Liberty Bell, Roy Halladay?

For those of you that don’t watch what breweries are doing like it’s an episode of Days Of Our Lives, New Belgium Brewing is eyeing the east coast.  Where is of course up in the air, but Philadelphia has emerged as a front runner.    The brewery just expanded into Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C, Philly has a great beer culture, and is close to a lot of valuable logistics networks.  A great spot for and east coast expansion.

In addition to Philly – Asheville, North Carolina is on the list.  Which is also being targeted by Sierra Nevada for an east coast build.  [Coloradoan]

Victory Dark Intrigue Heads For Distro

The 2nd and final edition of Victory Brewing’s barrel aged offering- Dark Intrigue took less than 4 hours to sell out.  Couldn’t make it to Downingtown for Dark Wednesday?  It will be hitting distribution this week.  What’s all the hoopla?  Victory took Storm King and aged it in Heaven Hill and Jim Beam barrels over the summer.  It already sounds delicious right? Well, due to time/capacity/contraints, this is the last time the brewery is making Dark Intrigue.

Dark Intrigue will be distributed in PA and NJ as well as 18 other states. Call your local retailer to see if they are getting some.

It’s a good thing too.  Those who got the beer had to wake up pretty early in the morning.  Like 4 am.  Some pics from the day via Downingtown Dish:

Brooklyn Blast Goes Year Round

Brooklyn Brewing’s Blast will become a year round offering soon.  Blast is a hoppy imperial IPA released over a year ago in the brewery’s Brewmaster’s Reserve Series.

The first in a line of Brewmaster’s “Special Reserve” beers, BLAST! Is a riotous celebration of hops. Here in Brooklyn, we’re half-way between the hop country of Yakima Valley, Washington and the hop country of Kent in England. So we use the bright citrusy American hops to bring the noise and earthy English hops to build the foundation of a hop monster brandishing five pounds of hops per barrel with considerable finesse. The varieties are half American, half English and the malts bring solidity, balance and beautiful flavors to a golden beer that’s ludicrously hoppy, strangely quaffable and oddly compelling. You won’t even know what hit you.

Style: Imperial IPA
Availability: Draft only
Taste Expectations: Lots of hops! Pine, Citrus, Grapefruit.  Bitter, and balanced

8.2% ABV

Inspired by the city of Chicago and densely populated with flavor, 312’s spicy aroma of Cascade hops is followed by a crisp, fruity ale flavor delivered in a smooth, creamy body that’s immensely refreshing.

Style: American Pale Wheat Hops: Liberty, Palisade
Malts: Two Row, Torrified Wheat

Availability: 12oz bottles, 12oz Cans, Draft
Arrival: 2012

Cans Likely For SweetWater Brewing

SweetWater Brewing (Atlanta, GA) is under going a pretty big expansion.  The build will push their capacity to 400,000 barrels.  BSJ got to tour the new facility last week.  We’ve all been thinking it, so I asked The Big Kahuna, Freddy Bensch  “Are you going to can?”  His answer -“We’ve built in space in the new building for a canning line, so.. Yes.”

This is awesome news of course.  I made the mistake of thinking that 420 Pale would be the first to find an aluminum home.  I was wrong.  Freddy’s leaning towards IPA to kick off the canning line.  Trust me, I’m ok with that.  As exciting news as this is however, the timeline for SweetWater cans might not be until after Summer, 2012.  Fingers crossed I can crack a can of SweetWater at the pool soon.

Other improvements:

Bottle conditioning: The brewery will start bottling condition soon (less O2. Fresher beer, better shelf life.)
Capacity:  SW currently brews about 77,000 barrels a year.  After – 400,000
New Office Space
New Event Space, separate from tasting room
New Rooftop Patio
Bigger Gift Shop

The brewery has no immediate plans to expand into new markets after the expansion. (But it’s not off the table of course.)
