What’s In A “Like”? $260 According To New Belgium

It’s one thing to like a Facebook page, another thing to know what that thumbs up means for your business. Many companies have a tough time figuring out what the real return on investment is for social media outlets such as Facebook.  New Belgium Brewing sunk $235,000 into their social media budget last year, most of that going to Facebook.  Was it worth it?  They asked their roughly 400,000 fans to fill out a survey.  With almost 3,000 responses, they were able to calculate Facebook’s worth to New Belgium.  The final number?  The average fan spends about $260 dollars a year on the brand.  Ad Age reports:

… Colorado’s New Belgium Brewing recently commissioned a survey of its Facebook followers in which it determined the average New Belgium Facebook fan spends $260 per year on the brand. That translates to $50.7 million annually – or roughly half the brewery’s sales each year.

New Belgium plans to expand their use of social media in 2012, for its seasonal releases in particular, that will now be exclusively advertised on on digital and social media outlets.  20% of the $1 million advertising budget for the release of new brew Shift will go toward digital media.

In looming beer release news, New Belgium is rolling out a new beer in April.  The brewery has set aside $1 million for the launch. 20% of that spend going to social media.  [CNBC]

Man Arrested For DUI.. On A Zamboni

For the second time in history – yes, second – police arrested a man for driving a Zamboni under the influence of alcohol (during a Pee Wee Hockey game.)  Joel Bruss was arrested last Monday at Hayes Arena in Apple Valley, MN for suspicion of DWI.  Police were called to the arena when bystanders watched Bruss driving the Zamboni, sliding all over the ice and into the sideboards.  Police stated that Bruss was “unsteady on his feet and smelled of an alcoholic beverage.”

The first arrest for operating a Zamboni under the influence was made in 2005 in New Jersey. [FoxTwinCities]

Tampa Bay Brewing Company Starts Canning

“Anita” is the newest member of the Tampa Bay Brewing Company family.  Who is she you ask?  She is their new canning machine that the team dubbed “Anita” which is short for “I need a beer”.  On Sunday, Dave Doble, brewmaster, grabbed one of the first cans off of the new line and shot-gunned it.

Tampa Bay Brewing purchased it’s $74k canning system from a Boulder, CO company who flew in an engineer to oversee the first canning venture.  The cans will allow for more expanded sales and distribution in the area.  The first cans you will see at Tampa retailers will be their flagship Old Elephant Foot IPA for $12/4 pack.

University Of BC’s Brewery To Satisfy Students Cheap Beer Needs

University Of British Columbia wants in the brewing business.   For a few years now, there has been a $103 million dollar empty building on campus.  There has been a debate for years as to how to utilize.  The answer is beer.  A student run brewery will go into the space, to be open by August 2014.   Those close to the university, don’t expect the “crafty-est” of brews.  The setup will brew cheap beer.

There are three factors at play with student drinkers: availability, price and cache. Homebrew being sold on the cheap will “attract one set of students, what I call the guzzlers,” Middleton said. “Those who don’t care what they drink so long as it’s liquid and get’s them pissed.”

They hop to use hops grown on campus, and other local ingredients.  Beer will be sold for campus keggers, and to supply the 2 campus bars – The Pit and the Perch. [TheStar]
