Mississippi Governor Signs Beer Bill

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed a bill on Monday morning that will allow beer makers to sell brews that are up to 8% alcohol by weight or 10% alcohol by volume.  Also known as SB 2878.  Previously, beers stronger than 5% were prohibited.  The passing of this bill will open up the Mississippi market to many craft brewers.  Just one example, nearby Abita will now be able to offer both Jockamo and Andygator in addition to their lower ABV brews.  Sierra Nevada will be bringing both Torpedo and Bigfoot to the Mississippi market where they already sell their Pale Ale.  The new law goes into effect on July 1, 2012.

Other beer related bills are still on the table in Mississippi…

Terrapin Expanding, Adding Jobs

Terrapin celebrates 10 years this Saturday.  On the eve of their anniversary, the brewery is in the process of expanding the overall capacity.  The expansion doesn’t come a minute too soon, as the brewery hasn’t been able to keep up.

Over dinner last fall, I asked John Cochran about the state of affairs at the brewery.  The orders for Terrapin products are nearly 1/3 more than they were currently producing.  Crude numbers looked like this – Production 19,000 barrels.  Demand: Close to 30,000 barrels.   Not a bad position to be in.

The Terrapin family is around 30 employees.  The brewery expansion will require 30 more jobs to be added, in the brewhouse and packing lines.

New Equipment.

Eight 200-barrel fermenters are on order, along side a shiny new brewhouse.   When the expansion is complete, the brewery should be able to produce nearly 40,000 barrels (1,240,000 million gallons) of beer annually.   The 10th Anniverary Carnival is this Saturday in Athens, Georgia. (P.S. Almost sold out.)

Boulevard Signs On With KC Royals And Kauffman Stadium

It’s your lucky day Royals fans.  Starting at this Friday’s home opener against the Cleveland Indians, Boulevard’s beers will no longer be in the shadows of big beer giants Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors at Kauffman Stadium.  A three year agreement between the stadium and the brewery not only allows fans in the stands to purchase Boulevard brews, but there will also be a pub inside the stadium behind home plate.  The pub will be accessible to Diamond Club patrons and will serve six of the brewery’s brews.

One change that is sure to be noticed by many is the huge 9 by 18 foot diamond shaped Boulevard sign that will go on the Hall of Fame building.  There will also be two Boulevard grills in left field that will offer both food and beer.

Another part of the agreement is with Aramark, who handles the stadium’s concessions, to allow Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat Beer to be sold in the stands by people with backpack mounted kegs.  Um, yes please!  [Boulevard Brewing Co]

Samuel Adams Latitude 48 IPAYou’ll see a little tweak to Samuel Adams Latitude 48 bottles this year. The IPA will be getting a bit of a facelift.   According to some regional Samuel Adams reps, these bottles will roll out this year.

Samuel Adams® Latitude 48 IPA is a unique IPA brewed with a select blend of hops from top German, English, and American growing regions all located close to the 48th latitude within the “hop belt” of the Northern Hemisphere.  The combination of hops in this beer creates a distinctive but not overpowering hop character.  The beer is dry hopped with Ahtanum, Simcoe®*, and East Kent Goldings hops for a powerful citrus and earthy aroma.  The hop character is balanced by a slight sweetness and full body from the malt blend.

Wild Heaven: Growler Sales Account For 24% Of 2012 Draft Sales

Wild Heaven Growlers

I had a discussion today with Nick Purdy of Wild Heaven Craft Beers (Avondale Estates, Georgia.)  The brewery recently reviewed their 1st quarter sales and found an interesting number.   24% of their total 2012 draft sales have come from Georgia’s 18 growler accounts.  Georgia figured out just over a year ago that growlers are legal for sale in off premise accounts NOT selling liquor.  Since then, there are 18 places around Atlanta to purchase growlers, with at least 3 more in planning.

Nearly 1/4 of the total sales of a small brewery comes from draft beer sold in glass jugs to go.  Something to ponder.
