Westvleteren XII Hits Total Wine on 12/12/12

One of the most talked about beer releases in America in 2012 is upon us. Westvleteren XII, considered by some to be the #1 on planet earth will be released on U.S. soil for one time only. The Trappist quadrupel is usually only available at the monastery in Westvleteren, Belgium. The abbey is in such need of repair, that production of the world’s most sought after beer had to be increased to raise the funds for the repairs.

Westvleteren XII available for sale in a 6 pack with 2 glasses for $84.99.  All proceeds benefit the Abbey. Total Wine has announced this release will occur on 12.12.12, and available at Total Wine in the following states: Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Arizona, California and Nevada.

Style: Quadrupel (Trappist)
Availability: 6 bottle packs w/ 2 glasses. One time release.
Arrival: 12/12/12

10.2% ABV

Westie XII U.S. Launch Delayed

Westie XII won’t hit nationwide distro until September. This just in from Shelton Brothers:

Westvleteren 12° – painstakingly brewed by the Sint-Sixtus Abbey in Westvleteren, Belgium – was initially scheduled to debut across the U.S.A. this month. For reasons known only to higher powers, the Abbey has requested that the official public release be delayed until September. However, the Abbey has now given its blessing for a small quantity of the beer to be previewed at The Festival, which takes place on June 23rd and 24th at Mechanics Hall in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Abbey hopes in this modest way to slake the thirst and reward the patience of true beer aficionados as they continue to wait for the Big Release later in the year.

Looks like panic will be delayed until September.

Rumor: No Westvleteren 12 Coming To Georgia

One of the highest rated beers in the world: Westvleteren XII is finding it’s way into distribution around the world this year.   The monastery in Belgium needs thousands of dollars in repairs and distributing the beers will help rebuild it.  When you have a beer as rare and so highly touted as Westie XII, it causes a stir.

70,000 boxes of  what has been ranked the #1 beer on planet earth will hit U.S. soil as early as June.  If you consider the number of individuals want this beer in 50 states, you aren’t left with many to share.  Shelton Brothers is one of the importers donating time (and shipping) to bring Westvleteren stateside.  After speaking with Shelton, BSJ has all but confirmed a sad bit of information.  Georgia will not receive XII.  Preliminary numbers put just 15 (assuming box sets) in the state.  That’s barely any product.  Savannah Distributing will apparently pass on bringing Westvleteren into the state.  (With pretty good reason if this is indeed true, you’ll never make anyone happy with such little product.)

Can’t wait to see the markups and eBay sales on this one.  Still waiting on Savannah to confirm this information.

No Westie 12 For Missouri? UPDATED

Paul Hayden of The Wine & Cheese Place based in St. Louis has done a little research on Westvleteren 12 coming to the state.  The plot thickens.

Since I had not seen the Westvleteren registered in Missouri, I started emailing to find out the story for Missouri.  I talked to Shelton Brothers and found out that they were told that the were  not the distributor for Missouri.  The country was split in half down the Mississippi with the exception of Illinois was added to this side of the country —  the distributor for Missouri for Westvleteren is our Chimay Importer — Manneken-Brussel Imports.   They have not responded to my email, but I talked our distributor for Chimay and they were told that they are not sending any Westvleteren to Missouri???  They are sending it all to the West Coast???

[TWCP]

Note: In case you don’t know the back story- Westvleteren 12 or “Westie 12” is considered one of the best beers on planet earth.  Until now, the beer was only available to buy at the monastery.  The monks brew only what is needed to sustain themselves, no more.  Repairs are needed at the abbey, so they are producing more -for sale publicly. For one time only.  It will no doubt be highly sought after.

UPDATE: 3/21 –  I just talked to Lisa at Manneken Imports  and she said they have every intention of coming to Missouri.  They are still waiting to complete the deal with Westvleteren before the can confirm anything.  So at this point things look good  (or at least better).

Westie XII Mania Draws Closer

Westvleteren mania is about to hit United States soil. Until this picture was posted by Chris LaPierre,a brewer for Iron Hill – I personally hadn’t seen a real live labeled Westie XII.  Side note, he is currently in Belgium drinking the beer, but that’s pretty much how they will look (plus a back paper Gov’t warning) when they hit the states.

Trappist Beers Celebrated With Stamps

There is never  a question that Belgium loves their beer.   The Belgium Post has issued a set of stamps commemorating the who’s who of Trappist beers.  The 6 Belgian monasteries are commemorated are Chimay, Orval, Achel, Rochefort, Westmalle, and Westvleteren. [StampNews]
