Widmer Brothers Brrr Back For Year 9

Winter is coming. (This isn’t about Game of Thrones.) Widmer Brothers Brrr has returned. The beer first hit the craft beer scene in 2006, and stayed in the lineup.

“Brrr is a beer that our brewing team wanted to drink during cooler months, and was definitely influenced by the Northwest’s love of hoppy beers,” said Brewer Doug Rehberg. “When we first brewed it, our goal was to brew a big, hoppy red IPA. We chose Simcoe hops, which were fairly new at that time, because of the hop variety’s fruity, spicy and citrus character. The recipe turned out to be perfect for the season, and it’s one that our team still looks forward to every year.”

It’s 90 Degrees, & Deschutes Jubelale Is Here

Catching up on some notable releases after changing over the site design – look what is already on shelves. Deschutes Jubelale.

It was over 90 degrees today, we are a little less than 2 months away from Halloween, and the winter ales are arriving.  To Jubelale’s credit – it always starts arriving in September. The strong ale is in its 26th year of being released. Local Oregon legend suggests that if the label suggests that snow on the label predicts snow for Mt. Bachelor and it’s nearby town. Judging by 2013, that looks like a possibility.  Now on shelves.

Sixpoint Global Warmer Headed For Cans

By the looks of it, Sixpoint Craft Ales (Brooklyn, NY) last released a beer dubbed Global Warmer around 2008. Even then, it was draft only. This edition is about 7% ABV, a little over 2% lower than the last release.

Some say in ice.

I hold with those who favor fire.

Widmer Creating Brrrbon Variants

Widmer Vanilla Aged Brrrbon 2013

Widmer Brothers’s annual release, Brrrbon, looks to be getting some extra attention in 2013. The brew,  (a winter warmer) already arrives seasonally in two additions – bourbon barrel aged, and regular. Now, meet a new variant – Vanilla Barrel Aged Brrrbon’ 13. For this edition, the brewers added vanilla beans to the aging beer in the bourbon barrels. That means even more vanilla notes than before. Let the weather cool down before you start thinking about this one.

… The addition of vanilla beans heightens the vanilla character imparted by the barrels, and adds a delicious layer of complexity to the beer’s oak and caramel character, making for a smooth winter warmer perfect for the season.

2013 Artwork: Deschutes Jubelale

Each year, Deschutes Brewery (Bend, OR) changes up the artwork for Jubelale, a winter release. It might be a little early to think about the release, but I’m sure you can enjoy the artwork until then. There is a lot of lore surrounding the artwork on the label of Jubelale.  Local Oregon legend suggests that if the label suggests that snow on the label predicts snow for Mt. Bachelor and it’s nearby town. Judging by 2013, that looks like a possibility.

A dark, malty celebration ale with layered flavors and beautifully balanced hopping. Jubelale pours deep garnet in color, medium bodied, with notes of chicory, earth, spice and fruit. To beer lovers, it’s like Yule fire and family.
