Heartbroken? Just love chocolate? Beer drinker? Second Self Bleeding Heart Red Ale has you covered either way.
Cocoa and vanilla are the stars in Second Self Bleeding Heart, plus strawberries – new for 2019. A beer inspired by southern-style red velvet cake.
Red malts and cocoa lend the beer a festive pink color, and the vanilla is the icing on top, rounding out each sip at the end of the taste. Co-founders Jason and Chris have been developing the recipe for over eight years.
Bleeding Heart is actually part of a series of “Hearts”. Other releases have included:
- Bitter Heart – Red Ale, extensively dry hopped. Extra hoppy, extra bitter. The real Valentine’s Day beer.
- Wild Heart – Red Ale, gone sour.
Second Self Bleeding Heart Strawberry is available in 12-ounce cans and draft until March 2018.
6.9% ABV, 27 IBUs

Milkshake IPA gone big. Pontoon Brewing Triple The Floor is Lava is a boozy follow-up to last year’s popular release.
The Floor is Lava, a milkshake IPA brewed with guava, strawberries, kiwi, and lactose, debuted last summer. The creamy IPA was big on fruit as well as fruity hops.
For the brewery’s anniversary party this week, Pontoon took the original recipe and “imperialized” the base IPA and doubled
tripled the amount of fruit, creating Triple The Floor is Lava.
Pontoon Triple The Floor is Lava is available at the brewery in Sandy Springs, Georgia in 16-ounce cans.
11.8% ABV, 55 IBUs
Another milkshake IPA is inbound in Atlanta. Monday Night Piranha Dealer debuts on September 14th.
A-Town’s Monday loving brewery has established a “milkshake” India pale ale base with rolled oats, torrified wheat, acidulated malt, honey, and of course – lactose milk sugar. A milkshake IPA is no milkshake IPA without a blast of fruit and vanilla. For this release, strawberries are the star.
Pre-sales of Monday Night Piranha Dealer have closed. 16-ounce cans will be available at the brewery’s “Hop Hut” on Trabert Avenue on September 14th.
Availability: 16oz Cans. Draft. Limited Release.
Allagash Avancé will be available in the brewery’s taproom again on July 14th.
Back in 2013, the Portland, Maine based brewery started purchasing fresh strawberries from Dole’s Orchard in Limington, Maine. The fresh fruit was combined with a strong ale brewed with four different strains of Belgian yeast, as well as multiple sugars including molasses, date sugar, white cane sugar, and dark rock candi.
Avancé is a strong, sour ale with aromas of strawberry preserves and toasted oak. Berries and more oak continue in the flavor, which concludes with a warm, sweet finish.
Allagash Avancé is available in 12.7-ounce bottles in the brewery’s taproom July 14th, alongside Coolship Cerise.
Style: Belgian-style Strong Ale / American Wild Ale (w/ Strawberries. Date Sugar. Candi Sugar. Molasses. White Cane Sugar. Barrel Aged. Bourbon.)
Hops: Perle, German Tradition, Tettnang, Saaz
Malts: 2-Row, Malted Barley Blend, Munich, Caramel, Carapils
Availability: 12.7oz Bottles
Ed Note: Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Neopolitan Stout is a fake. The brewery created fake labels ahead of the official BCBS announcement.
The original story below from July 10th, 2018.
First get familiar with the term “pastry stout”. The beer industry is full of them these days. Take a simple imperial stout.- and throw in ingredients you’d find in a scone, brownie, cookie, or cake. Pastry stouts now have vanilla beans, cinnamon, cacao nibs, coconut, lactose, even breakfast cereal or movie theater candy. Not to mention aged various spirits barrels. They are basically alcoholic desserts.
Chicago’s Goose Island is home to one of the most well-known barrel-aged imperial stouts – Bourbon County. Over the years, Coffee, Vanilla, and berry editions have surfaced. Goose Island hasn’t turned a blind eye to the success of the (using this term loosely) “style” and is potentially bringing their own pastries to the table.
Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Neopolitan Stout looks to sweeten palates this fall. The imperial stout has been aged in bourbon barrels with vanilla, lactose milk sugar, strawberry puree, and chocolate. Think boozy ice cream.
No official announcement has been made by Goose Island on any of the 2018 variants.
Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Neopolitan Stout is slated for 16.9-ounce bottles and draft.
