Innis & Gunn Releases Smoke Beer Collaboration

A new collaboration from Innis & Gunn (Edinburgh, Scotland) has hit the market in the United Kingdom. The winner of the bartender showdown, Innis & Gunn Smokin’ Gunn is a smoke beer collaboration brewed with David Ashton-Hyde. Hyde is the head bartender at The Hinds Head in Bray.

Inspired by his love of Canadian and American whiskies, and a weakness for pancakes and maple syrup, David wanted to create a beer that would make a perfect after-dinner drink. Smokin’ Gunn is a rich, robust and complex smoked beer.

The beer uses malts smoked over beach wood to give Smokin’ Gunn a slight smoky hint. In true Innis & Gunn fashion, the beer is aged in bourbon casks.  On sale now in the Innis & Gunn store.

Style: Smoke Beer (Barrel Aged. Bourbon)
Hops: Super Styrian, Northern Brewer
Malts: Oak-smoked I & G Ale Malt, Roasted Barley

Availability: 11.2oz Bottles (330ml)

Stone to Honor the Life of Fallen Employee

Stone Brewing Co. pays tribute to one of their own with this forthcoming release. Earlier this year, tragedy struck the brewery with the loss of Matt Courtright.

Matt’s Burning Rosid’s is a cherrywood smoked saison, his own recipe he developed with friend Brian Bishop. Stone will be donating funds from the sales of Rosid’s to GoDesignInc.org, an architectural charity that Matt passionately believed in.

Life is extraordinarily precious. joyous _and fragile. At Stone. we recently were reminded of this when we lost our dear friend and coworker, Matt Courtright. We felt that there was no better way to share with the world what an extraordinary person he was than by brewing this beer he created. Rather than a somber memento, please think of this as a celebration of Matt. We do. We can’t contemplate it arty other way. Matt was by no means a shrinking violet. Quite the contrary. He was exuberant. courageous, outwardly positive and the type of stalwart friend everybody who knew him was happy to have in their corner. Matt’s smile and voluminous laugh were infectious mainstays around the brewery. He was larger than life in everyday and he was without a doubt an incredible brewer.

Everyone at Stone recognized Matt’s prowess and passion for brewing. He loved to explore What-Ifs and Why-Nots. To wit he crafted the beer you hold in your hands. which he conceived with Stone friend and colleague Brian Bishop. Burning Rosids is a Belgian-style saison incorporating a unique ingredient—cherrywood-smoked malt (the name references the rosid plant family from which cherry trees hail).

Brian and Matt’s many devoted brewing comrades here at Stone were proud to hoist their mash paddles and brew this recipe for him as a symbolic gesture of how much he meant to everyone and how immensely he is missed. When you enjoy this very special beer, please on all of unto raising your glass in Motto memory and to everything he so passionately stood for: contributing and caring for others. passion and skill for his art, and laughter. Lots of laughter. Among the long list of things he held dear was GoOesignInc.org, a charity committed to fulfilling the architectural needs of developing communities around the world, and we are proudly contributing funds earned through the sale of this beer to this worthy organization in Matt’s honor. Enjoy. and please remember that life and those we hold dear are precious gifts to be cherished every day. Consider sharing this beer, conversations on life’s passions and again, lots of laughter with good friends as we remember ours.

Out of tragedy comes a celebration of life. Toasting a beer, his beer, in his honor is probably the best toast craft beer and offer. Official details forthcoming from the brewery soon.

Woodchuck Smoked Cider debuts

Woodchuck Hard Cider has just shipped their latest offering, Woodchuck Cellar Series Smoked Apple.  This is the second release in the Cellar Series.

This edition is a bit of a collaboration with local business Vermont Smoke and Cure. Woodchuck cider maker John Matson filled their custom smokehouse with apple pomace (the pulpy residue left behind after the apples are press for juice). The pomace was smoked with maple and applewood chips, then brought back to the cidery.

The resulting flavor is described as having “strong crisp apple notes with hints of vanilla are balanced on an applewood smoked backdrop.  A well-balanced, limited run cider that is perfect for the cooler days ahead.” Available in 22oz bottles only for a limited time. ERP $4.99

Style: Cider (Smoked)
Availability: 22oz bombers. Limited Release.

Clown Shoes Uses Holy Water, Rum Barrels

Clown Shoes Brewing continues to fight evil with Hammer of the Holy. This sure to be amazing stout has been aged in 40 year old Jamaican rum barrels with holy water. Yes, holy water.

Much like previous release Vampire Slayer, this beer fights evil with the addition of holy water added to the boil. [No, I don’t think that boiling holy water diminishes the beer’s ability to cast out evil.]

But wait, there’s more. The malt was smoked with vampire killing stakes. So, grab a glass and cast out some demons. Hopefully taking a few of those Twilight losers with you.

Style: Imperial Stout (w/ Holy Water. Barrel Aged. Rum)
Availability: 22oz bombers
Arrival: TBA  (Hopefully for Halloween)

Red Hare Releasing Rauchbier

Red Hare Brewing Company has readied the next edition in the Rabbit’s Reserve series: Rauchbier. The Rabbit’s Reserve is a series of draft only, on-off releases. Rauchbier, or smoke beer, uses smoked and dark roasted malts.

Rauchbier is reminiscent of a German-style Oktoberfest and can literally be translated to “smoked beer”. Munich, smoked, and dark roasted malts provide this brew with its softly smoked flavor and smooth maltyness. It is lightly bittered in order not to overwhelm the palate and to keep the smoky malt profile upfront. This is a particularly aromatic brew with hints of bacon coming through on the nose. Golden copper in color, and surprisingly drinkable this beer comes in at 6.8% ABV.

If you go:

Saturday, September 28th. 2-4 pm. Live music, food trucks, and Rauchbier.

1998 Delk Industrial Blvd, Marietta, GA 30067.
