Beer Street Journal Video: Brewing a Tomato Saison with Wild Heaven

Beer Street Journal joined Wild Heaven Craft Beers brewmaster Eric Johnson on a backyard brew day in rural Winterville, Georgia. This 50-gallon setup is the birthplace of Wild Heaven. This wasn’t any old pale ale brew day, we were on a special mission. Brew a special tomato-based beer for JCT Kitchen’s Attack of the Killer Tomatoes Festival.

Honestly, I can’t think of a single beer brewed with tomatoes. Neither could Eric, so when he went looking around brewers forums, not a lot of people thought it was a good idea. This is something you need to know about Eric Johnson. You can’t tell him no. For this first edition, the base beer is White Blackbird, an upcoming saison release by the brewery. Heirloom tomatoes were selected to add to the mash, then spiced with white peppercorns. For added depth, the saison was aged on cacao nibs and  Madeira oak.

If you are in Atlanta, you’ll get a shot at this brew this weekend.

Style: Saison (w/ Tomatoes, White Peppercorns, Cacao Nibs, Oak Aged. Madeira)
Availability: Draft only. Festival Limited

A New Rodenbach Emerges

LR_ROD_CR_LABELFRONT_75_USA_V5

If you love lambics, wild ales, and sours, read further. Rodenbach – one of the world’s leading brewers of sour beers is bringing you a new one. Caractére Rouge (Red Character) features red fruits like cranberries, raspberries and sour cherries, aged in oak.

The exclusive RODENBACH Caractere Rouge, with an alcohol content of 7%, is the result of a 6-month maceration with fresh fruit (sour cherries, raspberries and cranberries) of a beer which matured in oak casks for 2 years. After its maceration, the beer is re-fermented in the bottle. Flavourwise this fruit beer has a rather sour taste, but of an exceptionally pure nature. Its light, residual sugars balance out the triangle of sour, sweet and dry flavours. This beer evokes the delicacy and experience of a fresh Burgundy wine.

Style: Flemish Red Ale (w/ Cranberries, Raspberries, Cherries. Oak Aged)
Availability: 750 ml bottles
Arrival: TBA

The Dr. Will See You Now. Terrapin Side Project #20

Terrapin Dr. Krunkles

Introducing the 2oth release in Terrapin Beer Co’s (Athens, GA) Side Project Series – Dr. Krunkles. The lovable brewer Krunkles rides again, this time with a white IPA. This experimental IPA uses a considerable amount of wheat, a farmhouse yeast (for a little funky flavor) with a twist – white peppercorns. Oh yeah, and it’s finished on White Ash oak staves. A complex, yet fun drinker in the heat perhaps?

Straight from the Orient and into the brewing ingredient R&D field comes the next incarnation of the most beloved IPA brewer on the planet, Dr. Krunkles. The Dr. is in with a new White Farmhouse IPA that has ordinary brewmasters bending over and sing “Moon River” in his honor. Dr. Krunkles White Farmhouse IPA reaches new heights in complexity and flavor by combining the malt and spices of a Belgian Witbier, the yeast of a Farmhouse Ale and the hoppy goodness of an American IPA. Dr. Krunkle’s twisted touch is a dash of white peppercorn and then wood aging on white ash.

Style: White IPA (w/ White Peppercorn, Oak Aged)
Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft
Arrival: August, 2013

More on Cigar City & Widmer Bros Gentlemen’s Club

Tomorrow, June 13, will be the official launch party of the Cigar City and Widmer Brothers collaboration Gentlemen’s Club. Inspired by the Old Fashioned cocktail recipe and the Gentlemen’s Clubs where the cocktail was first served over 100 years ago, Gentlemen’s Club is a twist on an Old Ale Recipe. This brew features cherries and oranges, Alchemy, Sorachi Ace and Pacifica hops, and hand-selected specialty malts to try and emulate the flavors of the Old Fashioned cocktail. Then, the beer was aged on three different woods: bourbon barrels, rye whiskey barrels and new oak spirals, creating three unique versions of the beer.

Looking for a bottle? The first will be released during a special party at Widmer Brothers Pub during Portland Beer Week on June 13th starting at 5pm. After that, special releases from both breweries will also be available on draft. Bottles of Gentlemen’s Club will be available at the Widmer Brothers store starting at 5pm June 13, 2013.
