New Belgium Announces New Sour, Collaboration

New Belgium officially announced the next two beers in their Lips Of Faith Series: Tart Lychee and The Lost Abbey Collaboration.

Tart Lychee – Brewed with lychee fruit, and blended into a barrel aged sour beer.   It’s brewed with pale malt, caramel-80, carapils, malted wheat and oats, then spiced with lychee fruit and a touch of cinnamon. The hazy orange Tart Lychee begins with bold, tropical aromas and ends with a sharp, dry finish. 7.5% ABV

The Lost Abbey Collaboration Brett Beer – The two breweries love of brettanomyces (wild, funky yeast) unites the 2 in this beer.  Tomme Arthur flew out to Ft Collins, Colorado to brew with New Belgium’s Peter Bouckaert.  In turn, Peter flew out to Lost Abbey’s San Marcos, California home.  Target, Centennial, & Sorachi Ace hops combined with the brett yeast give the beer a citrus & pineapple flavor with a funky/sour edge.  7.5% ABV

Look for Tart Lychee on shelves now, Brett Beer in May.

Availability: Draft, 22 oz bombers.

New Belgium/Lost Abbey Collab: Brett Beer

New Belgium Lost Abbey Brett BeerBehold, the result of Tomme Arthur of The Lost Abbey travelling to New Belgium Brewing to create a Lips Of Faith beer.   Soon, New Belgium will travel to California to brew another version in San Marcos.

The best part of collaboration is discovering mutual passions.  With Lost Abbey it was the wild  yeast strain Brettanomyces.  Using Belgian inspiration, we fermented the beer with brett to bring out tropical fruit notes, crisp haziness and bright flavor.  A touch of fruity sorachi ace hops pleases the palette and entices frequent sips.

Style: American Wild Ale

New Belgium Fresh Hop & Prickly Passion Round Out 2011

New Belgium Brewing rounds out their 2011 Lips of Faith series with these 2 new releases: Fresh Hop India Pale Ale and Prickly Passion Saison.   These releases follow the recent and very popular Clutch and Kick Lips Of Faith releases.

Fresh Hop India Pale Ale – IPA, 7% ABV, 70 IBUs.  Packs a citrus punch of Amarillo, Centennial and Cascade hops, straight off the vine in Washington State.  This brazen and deliciously bitter IPA pours deeply golden with the slight haze of a really hoppy beer.  The array of hops gives a sharp blast, but the finish is light and dry.

Prickly Passion Saison – Saison, 8.5% ABV.  In a fruit medley of passion fruit and prickly pear, Prickly Passion Saison is New Belgium’s return to farmhouse ales.  The fruit juices combine with the tropical esters of an earthy Saison yeast, creating a broad and reaching mango-like character.  Deemed “ostentatiously amber,” this Lips selection is guaranteed to provoke the palate.

Hops: Target, Liberty
Malts: Pale, C-80
Fruits: Prickly Pear, Passionfruit

“We opted not to make our fourth quarter Lips selections exceptionally wintery or heavy,” said New Belgium brewer Grady Hull.  “Instead, we are hosting a hops harvest party and bringing uncommon fruit selections to the table, both of which sparkle with holiday flavor.”What? No stouts? It’s wintertime!

Availability: 22oz bombers, November-February.
