Unknown Brewing’s Beer with a Really Long Name is Brewed with Scorpions

The Unknown Brewing Company (Charlotte, NC) is releasing a follow up to to the very recent Vehopcirator Imperial IPA. This name is much longer than the first – La Jordana del Escorpion en Fuego Hacia la casa del Chupacabra muerto.

This roughly translates to “The Path of the Fiery Scorpion through the House of the Dead Chupacabra”. Shortening it to Escorpion en Fuego, the beer is an imperial Mexican lager, with agave nectar, seranno peppers, and aged on tequila oak staves. Oh, just in case that wasn’t enough, 99 (food grade) scorpions.

When asked if these scorpions would affect the flavor, head brewer and owner Brad Shell responded “I’m not sure, that’s not the point. The point is this beer needs scorpions. Some things just have to happen”.

Unknown Brewing Escorpion en Fuego releases on The Day of the Day, November 1st in 22oz bombers and draft.

Style: Mexican Lager (w/ Seranno Peppers, Agave Nectar. Scorpions. Oak Aged. Tequila.)
Availability: 22oz Bombers, Draft.
Arrival: November 1, 2014

10.1% ABV

Dogfish Head “Beer Thousand” Celebrates Guided By Voices

Dogfish Head (Milton, DE) loves musical collaborations. Rosabi, a beer brewed with musician Julianna Barwick and wasabi root recently hit shelves.

A smaller batch of a new musical collaboration appeared in June – Dogfish Head Beer Thousand. The offering celebrates the 20th Anniversary of Guided By Voices album, Bee Thousand.

Beer Thousand was tapped in June at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison, Wisconsin, with a little bit available at the Dogfish Head pub in Rehobeth Beach, Delaware.

What is it? Beer Thousand is an imperial lager, brewed with 10 grains, 10 hops, and is 10% ABV. Mathematically,  10x10x10=1000. Beer Street Journal is told Beer Thousand will be bottled later this fall with a 10-inch record.

Style: Imperial Lager
Availability: 12oz Bottles, late 2014

10% ABV

Guinness Launching Blonde American Lager. Brewed Stateside.

You know Guinness for the darker side of life. Namely the nitro dry irish stout. In recent years, there have been different releases by the Irish brewery, but the most popular is undeniably the stout.

In August, the brewery is launching a new beer that is just a little out of character, Guinness Blonde American Lager. Yes, it’s brewed in the United States, with American hops.

A crisp, refreshing tasting beer with a rich, delicious flavor, brewed in America in the Guinness traditions known only to our master brewers with our famous Guinness yeast, and Mosaic and Willamette American hops.

A little investigation shows this beer being brewed by City Brewing Company, a contract brewery that operates three different locations in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.

Guinness Blonde American Lager will be available in 12oz bottles and draft. Official announcement to follow.

Style: Blonde Lager
Hops: Willamette, Mosaic
Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft.
Arrival: August, 2014

Red Hare Collaborates with Oakshire Brewing

Red Hare Brewing (Marietta, GA) took a trip to Oakshire Brewing (Eugene, OR) over the winter. The two breweries struck a friendship that leads us to this summer offering, based on Oakshire’s Ill Tempered Gnome Winter Ale.

On a recent trip to Oregon, while seeking shelter from a freak blizzard, head brewer from Oakshire Brewery  invited the Red Hare crew to warm up with their sour barrels and hearty winter ales. As a nod to their Ill Tempered Gnome Winter Ale, we decided to collaborate on a summer version, an India Pale Lager. With this collaborative effort, we were able to get enough Citra hops to amok this beer a go. This India Pale Lager has the biscuity, malt flavor profile of a Lager, with the intense bitter, tropical  citrus tones of an IPA.

Style: India Pale Lager
Hops: Citra, Zythos
Malts: Two Row, Bonlander, Munich, 40L Caramel Malts

Availability: Draft only

6.2% ABV, 70 IBUs
