Ommegang/Duvel Collab “Rustica” Arrives In October

Coming this October is a new collaboration between Brewery Ommegang and Duvel.  Rustica features the best of both worlds. For this collaborative brew, Ommegang changed just one detail about the infamous golden ale by Duvel – the yeast.   Ommegang’s house yeast gives this a fruitier, funkier note.

It’s our first Belgian-style Golden Ale, a elegant ale noted for using simple ingredients to create complex flavors and aromas. We worked closely with Duvel on the recipe and processes, yet added our own signature notes. This Duvel collaboration created a fine ale, one with all the depth and breadth of Duvel’s classic Belgian Golden Ale, along with rustic notes, including fruity esters from our yeast.  RUSTICA is brewed with generous amounts of fine Pils malts, like like Duvel. It’s hopped with Styrian Coldings, like Duvel. It comes in at 8.5% abv, like Duvel. And it offers lively carbonation with a large frothy white head, like Duvel.

Style: Farmhouse Ale
Availability: 750 ml bottles, Corked & Caged. Draft
Arrival: Early October, 2012

8.5% ABV

Jester King Releasing Viking Beer Clone Gotlandsdricka

Jester King Craft Brewery preps for the release of Gotlandsdricka, a new farmhouse ale. The name means “Drink of the Good Land”, and is purported to be a beer of the Vikings. This beer mimics the farmhouse ales traditionally brewed on the island of Gotland in Sweden, using more herbs and berries. (A lot like sahti is.) For this brew, Jester King used birchwood smoked malt, juniper, and sweet gale. Sweet gale (aka myrica gale) has been used as an insect repellent, and a stomach pain remedy.

…From what we can gather, the original beer would likely have been smokey, sour and reeking of juniper and birch. It would not have been the product of fermentation with brewer’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) in a temperature controlled, sanitized stainless steel vessel, which is how our rendition of the style was created. Rather, like all historic beers brewed before the rather recent discovery and harnessing of brewer’s yeast, it would have been the product of fermentation involving wild yeast and bacteria.

Style: Farmhouse Ale (w/ Juniper, Sweet Gale, Smoked)
Availability: The first tapping of Gotlandsdricka will be at the Borefts Beer Festival on September 28th and 29th at Brouwerij de Molen in The Netherlands. It will make its stateside debut a week later at the Texas Craft Brewers Festival in Austin on October 6th and at the Pints for Prostates Denver Rare Beer Tasting IV on October 12th. Following its debut at the festivals, a limited amount of naturally conditioned kegs, casks and gravity kegs will be released in Texas with a wider bottle release to follow. A portion of the bottle release will also be made available through the Rare Beer Club.

Arrival: Late September, 2012

6.6% ABV

Jester King Mad Meg Planned For Bottles

Jester King Mad Meg
From Jester King Brewing’s limited release collection – Mad Meg.   The beer has just debuted on draft, and will soon hit bottles.

“Provision Ale” is a rough translation of the French term “bière de provision“, which was sometimes used to describe special beers that were suitable for extended storage and aging. Brewed from relatively simple, straightforward ingredients, Mad Meg is golden colored and quite strong, at over 9% ABV. Its palate intertwines delicate farmhouse esters with earthy, spicy hops and clean malt flavors. The name “Mad Meg”, refers to a peasant woman from Flemish folklore, also known as “Dulle Griet” or “Dull Gret”, who leads an army of women to pillage hell. She’s famously depicted in Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s 1562 painting by the same name.

Style: Farmhouse Ale
