Collaboration: Widmer Brothers & Boneyard Beer

A new collaboration is on the way in the craft beer industry. This year Widmer Brothers Brewing (Portland, OR) celebrates 30 years of craft brewing. To celebrate, the brewery is collaborating with a few special people. (Six to be exact.)

Coming soon is Blacklight IPA, brewed with Boneyard Beer from Bend, Oregon. Widmer Brothers brewer Ben Dobler has known Boneyard’s Tony Lawrence for 17 years, making this first collaboration an easy choice.

Blacklight IPA is a meld of the two breweries styles. A hop forward, sessionable 4.2% abv black ale with dark roasty notes.

Brewed with a heavy dose of five different hops varieties and stained black as night with cold-steeped dark malts, this beer hits huge with hop flavor and aroma without the heavy roast and harsh bitterness suggested by its color.

Widmer Brothers/Boneyard Beer Blacklight IPA will be available in 22oz bombers in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Minneapolis, New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia.

Style: Black IPA
Hops: Alchemy, Nelson Sauvin, Amarillo, Summer, Citra

Collaboration: Jolly Pumpkin & Anchorage

Love it when craft brewers collaborate? Then get behind this. Alaska’s Anchorage Brewing and Jolly Pumpkin (Dexter, MI) have created Calabaza Boreal.

Keeping with Jolly Pumpkin’s tradition of funky beer, this Belgian style beer is aged in oak barrels with grapefruit, grapefruit juice, and peppercorns. The name is a mash up of the two brewery’s identities – “boreal” or northern region and “calabaza” meaning pumpkin.

When introspection fails, it’s time to look outward for inspiration. Perhaps Northward! One of the people who inspired me this past year is my friend Gabe Fletcher. of Anchorage Brewing Co. We brewed this beer together. I hope it inspires you.

Jolly Pumpkin & Anchorage Calabaza Boreal will be available in 750ml bottles.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Grapefruit, Grapefruit juice, Peppercorns.)
Availability: 750ml Bottles
Arrival: TBA

SweetWater & Breckenridge Collaborate

SweetWater Brewery (Atlanta) and Breckenridge Brewery (Denver, CO) have a very special collaboration tapping later this month.

The recipe is based on the 16th Anniversary Ale from SweetWater, a red wheat wine ale and Breckenridge’s new spring seasonal Ophelia Hoppy Wheat Ale.  If you weren’t aware, SweetWater founder Freddy Bensch came from Colorado to Georgia to start the brewery. He has been friends with Breckenridge founder J. Todd Usry for years.

“I really enjoyed our 16th Anniversary Red Wheat Wine Ale and I think this brew is going to pair well with the Mosaic hops and malted Buckwheat, two ingredients we’ve never worked with before,” said SweetWater Head Brewer Nick Nock. “I’m looking forward to getting back up there to get my hands, and lips, on it!”

You will know this beer “O’ Tay”, limited to draft only in Colorado, with special tappings during the Craft Brewer’s Conference.

Style: Wheat Ale
Availability: Draft Only. Limited to Colorado

If you go:

Wednesday, April 9, the Ale House at Amato’s will be tapping the collaborative brew and hosting a full tap takeover featuring Breckenridge Brewery and SweetWater Brewery beers.  The night will also honor the late Curtis McArthur of SweetWater Brewery with a toast at 4:20 p.m. Brewer friends of McArthur, Upslope Brewing Company and Crooked Stave, will be in attendance with a few of their beers to pour as well.

Thursday, April 10, the two breweries will embark on a crawl to seven Denver bars including: Scruffy, Murphy’s, The Lobby, Star Bar, Lucky Pie, Blake St. Vault, Pour House,  and Strata Bar at the Hyatt Regency.

Each account will carry the collaboration beer and an additional unique beer from each brewery. Follow @BreckBrew and @SweetWaterBrew on Twitter and Instagram to locate the crew and join the crawl yourself.
