Cigar City’s Tequila Barrels Go Off Script

Cigar City Brewing’s (Tampa, FL) Ne’er-do-well started its life intending on being El Murcielago, a double cream ale with lime peel and cumin. Thanks to the barrel changing the script on the brewers, it ended up being a little different. Some of the barrels started giving the cream ale some peanut flavor, so the brewery ran with it. Not without adding tamarind and some cayenne for good measure.

Ner-do-well began it’s life intending to be a new batch of El Murcielago. However, it ended up in a different place in its barrel life. You never know what might happen when you spend your life at the bottom of a barrel of tequila. We noticed that some of the barrels started contributing a peanut flavor to the beer so we rolled with it. We added tamarind and a bit of cayenne to create a Mexican-Thai hybrid. It simply is a ne’er-do-well.

Cigar City Ne’er-do-well will be available in 750ml bottles.

Style: Cream Ale (w/ Cayenne, Tamarind. Barrel Aged. Tequila.)
Availability: 750ml bottles
Arrival: TBA

First Look: Goose Island Bourbon County Vanilla Rye

Goose Island Brewing (Chicago, IL ) preparing for the 2014 round of Bourbon County offerings. This year will see the release of a previous offering (or, at least a bit of a rendition of) Bourbon County Vanilla- Goose Island Bourbon County Vanilla Rye.

It was 2010 when Goose Island released Bourbon County Vanilla. While that edition featured the base imperial stout, aged in Heaven Hill barrels with vanilla beans, this coming edition features the use of rye whiskey barrels. Two pounds of Mexican vanilla beans are in each barrel, sourced from four different distilleries.

We first bottled this beer at the countless requests of festival-goers who first tasted it. However, when that last bottle of Vanilla BCBS was was grabbed off the shelves four years ago, you needed more. We heard you in the brewery, at festivals, and where there was an open ear. Well, you weren’t alone. To be honest, we needed more too. We couldn’t be happier to make this beer again, and most of all, drink it with you once more.

The full Bourbon County line will include:

Barleywine

Bourbon County Brand Stout

Proprietor’s Reserve

Coffee

Style: Imperial Stout (w/ Vanilla Beans. Barrel Aged. Rye Bourbon)
Availability: 22oz bombers
Arrival: November 28th, 2014

13% ABV

Firestone Walker Velvet Merkin 2014: Sept 15th

Firestone Walker Velvet Merkin 2014. This bourbon barrel aged oatmeal stout is touted by the brewery to be one of the best vintages yet.

“We let our hair down with the 2014 Velvet Merkin and changed up the barrel mix a bit compared to previous vintages,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. Velvet Merkin has always had this signature milk chocolate character, but now the vanilla notes are more pronounced as well. We’re pretty stoked on this vintage.”

Firestone Walker Velvet Merkin 2014 is a blend of Rittenhouse Rye, Elijah Craig, and Woodford Reserve barrels. The average is about a year in all the barrels.

Look for Firestone Walker in 22oz bombers, in fancy boxes for about $16.99 in select U.S. markets.

Style: Oatmeal Stout (Barrel Aged. Bourbon)
Availability: 22oz Bombers.
Arrival: September 15th, 2014

Bayou Teche’s Barrel Aged Honey Beer Returns

Wild Honey. That’s what Bayou Teche Biere’s Miel Sauvage means when you translate it. The brew uses local Louisiana honey from the brewery’s neighbor Bernard Apiaries. Sauvage is  inspired by French farmhouse breweries making Biere de Mel or honey beers.

Miel Sauvage is Cajun French for wild honey and our Biere de Miel is fermented with honey from our neighbor, Bernard’s Apiaries and with barley imported from France.  This mahogany colored beer has a pronounced honey aroma and is barrel aged to contribute a smooth vanilla oakiness.

Bayou Teche Miel Sauvage is available in 22oz bombers, and draft.

Style: Honey Ale (Barrel Aged. Whiskey.)
Malts: Pale, Caramel, Munich

Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft. Late summer/Fall seasonal.
