Barrel-aged malt liquor. Founders DKML debuts in July

Founders DKML, a barrel-aged malt liquor, has been formally announced for release in the brewery’s Barrel-Aged Series this July.

Hot on the heels of Kentucky Breakfast Stout, and recently released Doom, is a completely new style for the Grand Rapids, Michigan based brewery – a malt liquor. The base beer is brewed with corn, plus a lager yeast that has been cultivated by Spanish brewer Mahou San Miguel, a strategic partner with Founders.

Founders DKML is not only dry-hopped, but aged in bourbon barrels.

“With DKML I wanted to do something totally original, and I don’t know anyone in the craft beer world who is barrel-aging malt liquor. After some early trials, we ended up with Mahou’s lager yeast to brew a really amazing malt liquor, and then we did what we do best – barrel-aged it. The bourbon barrel smoothed it out while giving it that ‘kick’ you would expect from an imperial malt liquor.” – Jeremy Kosmicki, Brewmaster

Founders DKML will be available in 12 ounce bottles, 750 milliliter bottles, and draft in the taproom starting in July, 2017. The brewery’s 46 state footprint will receive it in late-July.

Style: American Strong Ale (Barrel Aged. Bourbon.)
Availability: 12oz Bottles, 750ml Bottles, Draft.
Debut: July, 2017

Birds Fly South Skin & Bone, one of the brewery’s best

Birds Fly South Skin & Bone, a collaboration with Tarpon Springs, Florida’s Saint Somewhere Brewing Company.

This beer was originally one of the first offerings by Birds Fly South Ale Project, based in Greenville, South Carolina. between the first release and this month’s returns, the brewery has opened a beautiful, wood heavy tap room in the city’s West End Water Tower District.

Skin & Bone is one of the best releases in the brewery’s budding arsenal. This beer hits on all the notes you chase in wild ales – tart, funk and funk. Each sip finishes with mellow hints of the chardonnay barrels. Looking back over 2016, Skin & Bone was easily one of the best new beers we tried. Definitely don’t miss this second round.

Birds Fly South Skin & Bone is on shelves now in upstate South Carolina in 750 milliliter bottles.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Peaches. Wine Aged.)
Availability: 750ml Bottles

Carolina Bauernhaus Petite Kriek releases May 6th

Carolina Bauernhaus Petite Kriek is up next in bottle for the Anderson, South Carolina based brewery.

The brewery’s base sour golden ale has been aged in Petite Syrah barrels before head brewer Keston Helfrich blended in a hefty chunk of art Montmorency cherries. By now the flavor of this future release should be taking shape.

We native fermented and aged our golden sour ale in Petite Syrah barrels before blending in a massive amount of tart Montmorency cherries to create a delightfully refreshing petite sour ale with a light body, tart acidity, bright pie cherry flavor , and a subtle barrel funk. This unique regional ale draws its acidity from a strain of lactobacillus isolated by SouthYeast labs from opuntia fruit in La France, South Carolina and a blend of locally captured native yeasts.

Carolina Bauernhaus Petite Kriek will be available in 750ml bottles at the brewery starting May 6th.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Cherries. Wine Aged.)
Availability: 750ml Bottles, Draft.
Debut: 4/6/17

Allagash James Bean (with bourbon & coffee) returns

Allagash James Bean has finally been bottled. The beer has been a draft-only offering in the past.

The base beer for Allagash James Bean is a Belgian-style strong ale with pure white cane sugar, that has been infused with cold pressed coffee after fermentation. The brewery chose Ethiopia Amaro Gayo beans for the brew, which boast flavors of blackberry and blueberry. The finishing touch on this big beer is the bourbon barrel aging.

Have you ever put bourbon in your coffee? If you do, drink this. If you don’t. Drink this. Coffee is bright and the bourbon a beautiful compliment to the boldness that James Bean is. Coffee, vanilla and bourbon dominate the aroma. Flavors of caramel, coffee, bourbon, and oak present themselves throughout this full-bodied beer. Think coffee, oak, caramel, and bourbon with a touch of berry. Start to finish.

Bean is further proof that coffee and bourbon work together (it’s been our breakfast of choice for years). Bourbon and coffee dominate this beer, but you can’t count out the Belgian-style golden ale base. Thats’s where the complexity really shines.

Allagash James Bean will be available 750 milliliter bottles debuted in early July at the brewery in Portland, Maine. Distribution has been slow and steady throughout the summer.

Style: Belgian-style Strong Ale (w/ Cane Sugar, Coffee. Barrel Aged. Bourbon.)
Hops: Tettnang, Hallertau
Malts: Allagash 2-Row Malted Barley Blend

Availability: 750ml Bottles, Draft.
Bottle Debut: 7/2/16
Latest Return: April, 2017
