Stillwater’s Barrel Aged Folklore: The Tale of Van Winkle

Enter another barrel aged offering from the Baltimore based beer maker.  Barrel Aged Folklore is currently in planning by Brian Strumke and Stillwater Artisanal Ales.

Folklore is a foreign stout with a touch of smoke.  Much like real folklore, the beer has a little history.  First brewed and known as 25 To One celebrating Stillwater’s 1st anniversary.  The recipe was tweaked, and returned in 750’s as Folklore.  So the story goes, Folklore finds its way into Pappy Van Winkle barrels creating a new piece of the story to hand down – Folklore, the tale of Van Winkle.

Brewdog’s AB:10 Is Wine Aged Brown Ale

Brewdog has bottled Abstrakt AB:10 this week.  This 11.5% ABV beer is an imperial brown ale aged in Spanish sweet red barrels from Malaga.

Stewart Bowman, our Head Brewer, devised an Imperial Brown Ale designed to perfectly complement the wine flavours and extract maximum depth and character from the giant barrels. We also felt the Imperial Brown Ale was ideally suited to be barrel aged and as well as the infusion of the Malaga wine character will also benefit added complexity and maturity from the time in oak.

Style: Brown Ale (Barrel Aged, Red wine)
Availability: 375 ml bottles, corked & caged
Arrival: Late June, 2012

11.5% ABV

Stone Puts Chocolate Cherry In Rye Whiskey

Jason Fields and Kevin Sheppard’s previous homebrew contest winning Cherry Chocolate Stout will find it’s way into rye whiskey barrels soon. The beer was brewed last year as a three-way collaboration between the home brews, Stone Brewing Co, and Troegs Brewing.   Cherry Chocolate Stout is brewed with 250 lbs of cocoa, vanilla beans, and sour cherries.

This was a ton of fun to brew  So far, the most memorable part about it was sampling the first wort which had been mashed with lots of specialty grains and about 250 lbs of pure cocoa.  It was amazingly smooth, velvety sweet, and rich with chocolate.  I felt like I was tasting the luscious sweetness of a chocolate river. It was a natural match to age this brew in rye whiskey barrels.  – Mitch Steele (Head Brewer, Stone Brewing Co.)

While the bottles don’t have the Quingenti Millilitre series explicitly on the label anymore, this edition joins a series of very small batch, barrel aged brews.

Style: Imperial Stout (w/ Vanilla Beans, Chocolate, CherriesBarrel Aged)
Availability: 5oo ml bottles
