Tapping a Beer Keg With Detonation Cord [VIDEO]

Detonation cord aka “det cord” is a tube filled with Pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) a compound similar to nitroglycerin.  It is used as a breaching agent for doors, or to set off bigger explosives like C4 or TNT.

RatedRR wrapped different lengths of det cord around full beer kegs to see what happens. 15 feet will tap it. 80 feet? That’s a different story. Some brewery out there won’t be getting their cooperage back.

A Beer with Chocolate & Lobster [VIDEO]

Dogfish Head (Milton, DE) brewed an oyster stout for a special event years ago, and thanks to the weather, they got stuck drinking all 85 kegs. Not wanting to drink another oyster stout again, founder Sam Calagione goes back to his Maine roots, and brewed a different beer featuring a different crustacean – the lobster.

That, plus cocoa nibs creates Choc Lobster, a brewpub exclusive that will also be at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival.

SweetWater IPA Day 2013 in pictures

This is Beer Street Journal’s wrap-up of  #IPADay 2013 from SweetWater Brewing Company. The brewery has trended the last two years as one of the hoppiest hot spots on social media on this day. The lineup is, of course, crazy. A sampling of the hop love includes Chocolate Bourbon IPA, Whiskey Barrel IPA, Hop Hash IPA, Some Strange (Dank Tank throwback), Double Bourbon Aged IPA, and all the cask offerings.

Overall, it was yet another successful IPA Day across the U.S. Here at SweetWater, five IPA cask variations were gone in an hour. I’m pretty sure the barrel-aged IPAs blew at the same time. One thing’s for sure: America’s love affair with hops continues. Check out the video above and the pics below.

Simpson’s Duff Gardens Opens, Complete with Duff Beer [VIDEO]

Flying straight off the animated screen and into your glass is Duff Beer. The infamous animated beer is now a reality (in the United States that is.) Duff Brewery is a part of the new Simpson’s Theme Park. The Duff Brewery “tap room” has opened in the park as you’ll see in the video. Beer Street Journal is told that the brewers went through about 10-15 iterations of Duff Light, and Duff Dry, taste testing with Simpsons creators Matt Groening and James L. Brooks.

Just as the animated series goes, these beers will/do mimic certain popular American lagers. No distribution for these brews either. They are park exclusive offerings.  Either was, this is the first time Duff beer has been authorized and legitimately made.
