10 Barrel Brewing creates a beer with the last Blockbuster Video on Earth

There’s an 80’s song that talks about video killing the radio star. Then came the internet, and movie streaming that eventually killed Blockbuster, what was once America’s largest movie rental service. There is only one Blockbuster left, and it’s located in Bend, Oregon. 10 Barrel Brewing is based nearby that last lonely bastion of physical media rental (unless you’re still using Redbox.) Of course, such a thing calls for a beer collaboration. Here’s nostalgic flashback in beer form – 10 Barrel Brewing The Last Blockbuster.

Don’t act like you didn’t snag a mountain of candy on the way out the door on your rental adventure. 10 Barrel Brewing The Last Blockbuster screams popcorn and movie theater candy, and they certainly did so in abundance.

The beer is subtitled a “S1nistor Black Ale’ with nuances of red licorice. The image the brewery is circulating has more theater candy in the background, but no mention of the label.

We’d almost think it’s an April Fool’s Joke if it didn’t pop up in August.

The brewery and PR company of record have not responded to a request for more details…

Ommegang is rounding out the Game of Thrones Series this year with a barrel-aged beer just for Jon Snow

You know nothing about brewing Jon Snow. Fighting for the throne? Sure. Drinking? Maybe. The fourth and final release this year in the Royal Reserve subset is coming by year’s end – Ommegang Game of Thrones King in the North.

We still don’t have the seventh book in the Fire & Ice Series or a release date for the next season of Game of Thrones. That doesn’t stop Ommegang from keeping the series alive in liquid form.

READ MORE: OMMEGANG GAME OF THRONES SERIES

Ommegang Game of Thrones King in the North is set to debut around Christmas, so the brewery has chosen a bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout inspired by Jon Snow himself. When we last saw Snow, he was making love to the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen. Let’s assume they sipped a boozy beer like this by the fire afterward.

“I don’t think we’re alone in our hopes for Jon Snow. And for those who missed one of the Collection during the year, we’re pleased to offer the opportunity to get all four at once, along with a glass in which to serve them.” – Doug Campbell, Ommegang President

Ommegang describes King in the North’s flavor as  ‘rich and full with notes of chocolate, vanilla, coffee, and roasted malt up front followed by smooth bourbon and a hint of oak”.  You just add the fur pelts and roaring fire. Try not to behead anyone.

The Royal Reserve Collection started in April with Hand of the Queen, following by Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. Next Month is Mother of Dragons, before wrapping up the year with this imperial stout.

Ommegang Game of Thrones King in the North will be available in 750-milliliter bottles, as well as a special multi-bottle gift pack with Game of Thrones glassware.

Style: Imperial Stout (Barrel Aged. Bourbon.)
Availability: 750ml bottles
Debut: December 2018

Pair with Easy Mac & lonely nights. Monday Night Dinner For One starts September

Monday Night Dinner For One debuts on September 1st. A lonely beer for one.

The Atlanta based brewery calls this a “multigrain India pale ale”, as it’s brewed with a mix of torrified wheat and spelt. The difference? Spelt is also called “hulled wheat”, a subspecies of common wheat. Torrified wheat refers to the process the wheat is treated with. In this case – a high-temperature heat treatment that breaks down the structure of the grain.

Both are used in this case for a hazy effect in the IPA. Because -these days it’s all about haze.

A rustic, smooth IPA that’s the perfect pair for ramen noodles, tv dinners and boxed mac and cheese.

Monday Night Dinner For One will be available in 12-ounce cans and draft, starting at 12 noon on September 1st.

Style: IPA
Hops: Mosaic, Motueka, Hallertau Blanc
Availability: 12oz Cans, Draft.
Debut: 9/1/18

SweetWater is releasing Mosaic Single Hop Hazy IPA as a seasonal this month

SweetWater Mosaic Single Hop Hazy IPA is officially the brewery’s latest seasonal, packaged this week.

Mosaic hops are the star of this hazy India pale ale. SweetWater debuted this release at the brewery for IPA Day on August 2nd.

We are going to simplify the release into simple terms. Mosaic is a dank all-star hop in the brewing world. Having a great stash of this hop increases your chances of a damn good IPA. In real life, not every brewery pulls it off. Water chemistry and dry-hopping plays a big role in the result. SweetWater Mosaic Single Hop IPA simply put – gets it all right. This hazy beer was once found in their “Hatchery Series”. Now, this release is gone full production, full on dank.

Waves of tropical and citrus flavors attack your palate. Think mango and pine. Finish just with just a touch of soft bitterness. If this were baseball, this a walk-off homerun of a seasonal.

SweetWater Mosaic is available for a limited time in 12-ounce bottles, 12-ounce cans, and draft.

Style: IPA
Hops: Mosaic

Availability: 12oz Bottles, 12oz Cans, Draft.
Debut: Mid-August 2018

6.2% ABV

Ommegang Game of Thrones Mother of Dragons up next in series

Ommegang Game of Thrones Mother of Dragons joins the brewery’s Game of Thrones Series in late September.

As the world continues to wait on George RR Martin’s sixth book (for years now), as well as HBO’s 8th season of the live action show, Brewery Ommegang continues to deliver beers inspired by the series. This September is dedicated to the “Mother of Dragons” Daenerys Targaryen.

This release is a blend of a smoked porter and Belgian Kriek, meant to be a representation of smoke and fire, found in the wake of Daenerys as she fights for her place on the Iron Throne. Ommegang describes this release as having “a rich with tart cherry up front leading to a center palate of semi-sweet chocolate then resolving to subtle smoke and mild sweetness.”

“Mother of Dragons represents in beer one of our favorite characters from Game of Thrones. Daenerys’s ascent from obscurity has been one of the most inspiring storylines of the show, and we’re thrilled to release a blend that embodies the character traits that have underpinned that rise.” – Doug Campbell, Brewery Ommegang president.

Ommegang Game of Thrones Mother of Dragons will be available in 750-milliliter bottles starting on September 28th.

Style: Smoked Porter/Kriek Blend (w/ Cherries)
Availability:750ml Bottles
