Longmont, CO (May 2012) – Funky little Oskar Blues Grill & Brew started 15 years ago when Dale Katechis and his high school sweet-heart stumbled across the small town of Lyons, Colorado while on a road trip north from their home in Alabama. That Rocky Mountain trip continues east as Dale finds the same downhome feeling in the rolling hills of Pisgah National Forrest of Brevard, North Carolina.
Oskar Blues, named “The hottest place to be on a Saturday night in Colorado” by Rolling Stone Magazine, has announced plans for a restaurant/music venue and brewery location just off the bike path to Bracken Mountain in the small downtown of Brevard, N.C. The brewery plans to have the soul-savin’ live music venue and brewery up and running by December 2012.
“I’ve left a bike in Brevard for years as we’ve been coming here to ride mountain bikes and check out our buddies Mountain Song Music Festival. This place rings true with the same eclectic mountain charm that inspired Oskar Blues to put Dale’s Pale Ale in a can back in the day in Lyons, CO.” says soul-founder Dale Katechis. “Brevard and Lyons share a small town main street tone mingled with live music and an energy emerging from the surrounding hills.”
Oskar Blues, one of the fastest growing breweries in the country, sells over 35 percent of their beer east of the big muddy river, making for a great opportunity to look into a local location in that area. They have secured a contract on a 30,000 square foot brewery space along with a 6,000 square foot restaurant/music venue location in downtown Brevard. “We’ve looked at the options of growing our Colorado based brewing to the next level and the thought the idea of opening another small, intimate restaurant and brewery on a grassroots level sounds like a lot more fun.” says Dale. “With that much beer traveling east of the Mississippi it allows us to invest in another small town that shares our passions and recoup the investment as we contribute to the community and streamline our shipping costs amongst other things.”
Oskar Blues has worked hard to keep that hands-on feel with small Colorado projects like their Hops & Heifers Farm, that provides homegrown beef, pork and vegetables to their restaurants, and handmade mountain bikes with REEB Cycles as the brewery & restaurants have been blessed with growth. “It’s important to us to keep that trailside comradery amongst each other and the community.” said Katechis.

Another Brewery Heads To North Carolina: Oskar Blues
Oskar Blues Brewing is opening a restaurant/music venue AND brewery in Brevard, N.C.
Dale Katechis, founder of the brewery and mountain biking enthusiast, has been travelling to Pisgah National Forest to bike for years. He even has is own line of beer inspired mountain bikes dubbed “Reeb.” (That’s beer spelled backwards.)
Oskar Blues has signed a contract on a 30,000-square-foot brewery space. Nearby, there is a 6,000-square-foot restaurant in the city of Brevard. Katechis is cites “shipping costs” as one of his decisions to build there. The new build should be ready by December, 2012. [TimesCall]
Yesterday, the brewery made headlines with the announcement of the use of Alumi-tek bottles for the upcoming Sun King collaboration release. Oskar Blues joins Sierra Nevada & New Belgium in new North Carolina brewery expansions.
SweetWater Brewing Company has started into their 2nd phase of their massive expansion. This week they received a brand new 250 barrel lauter tun. It arrived in Jacksonville, Florida 4 weeks ago. Due to the size of the tun, the times the piece of equipment could travel on the road was restricted. The Georgia State Patrol personally escorted the lauter tun down to Ottley Drive in Atlanta.
Over the next 5 years, SAB Miller plans on spending $2.5 billion in Africa over the next 5 years. Annual investments will be in the neighborhood of $500 million. The cash will build breweries and revamp the ones currently in operation. The last quarter of 2011 saw an 11% increase in sales volume, and the SAB thinks it’s time to jump in with both feet.
Back in 2010, SAB started producing a lager (Imperial Lager) brewed with cassava, a root vegetable that is plentiful in Africa. Cassava is used as a partial substitute expensive barley. The beer hit shelves last year. Imperial Lager is quite beneficial to the farmers in the region growing Cassava.
Another beer- Chibuku, is based off a popular African home brew made with corn and sorghum. Chibuku has a nickname – “Shake Shake,” because the you need to shake the beer prior to drinking. That beer is even cheaper than the lager (mentioned above), which is great for an economic climate where beer is a luxury. SAB Miller wants to elevate beer to a social beverage like other countries around the world, not a status symbol.
Annual African beer consumption is just over 2 gallons a year. In the United States, the average is around 18 gallons.
Southern Tier Brewing will break ground on a new, 110-barrel brewhouse soon. The expansion will allow the Lakewood, New York brewery to increase overall capacity 3x the current output.
Additions include: A second conditioning room, 6 – 660-barrel fermenters, and an increased cellar. Southern Tier is aiming total capacity at 150,000 barrels annually (4.6 million gallons.)
Beer additions? In addition to test batches of a 2X Mas, there is a new Belgian style series in the works.
5 Rabbit Brewery (Chicago, IL) just announced they are expanding distribution to Ohio. I had a great conversation with Issac Showaki about the move and the future.
Distribution
The brewery initially started distributing to Cook County, Illinois. That covered most of the metro area. In December, 2011 5 Rabbit tacked on the suburbs. Starting this week, the whole state of Ohio will start receiving 5 Vulture, and 5 Rabbit. 5 Lizard and a new offering will arrive in Ohio in May. But wait! What about the rest of the home state of Illinois? Issac tells me that the timing to enter Ohio through Cavalier Distributing was right, so they jumped at the chance. The rest of Illinois will get 5 Rabbit’s tasty lineup by the end of this summer.
Production Location
5 Rabbit is in the process of building a full scale production brewery. The 30BBL brewhouse will be open by the end of the summer on Chicago’s south side. The first year of production, Isaac expects to do about 4,000 barrels. The facility could produce just shy of 40,000.
