Beer Street Journal Video: SweetWater Releases The Price Is Wrong!

SweetWater Brewery’s (Atlanta) latest Dank Tank release is now shipping, dubbed – The Price is Wrong!  This new offering is a bit of a departure from SweetWater’s mastery of the hop arts. Mark Medlin, Nick Nock and the rest of the brewing team have merged American hops and Belgian yeast into a Belgian strong pale ale that is sure to leave an impression.

The Price is Wrong! is literally a merge of an imperial IPA with the fruity notes of a Belgian ale. It’s as delicate as it is dangerous. Beer Street Journal grabbed a glass of this boozy newbie with SweetWater’s brewmaster Mark Medlin. He gives you the rundown in this new exclusive video.

Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale
Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft. One time release

This is Beer Street Journal’s wrap-up of  #IPADay 2013 from SweetWater Brewing Company. The brewery has trended the last two years as one of the hoppiest hot spots on social media on this day. The lineup is, of course, crazy. A sampling of the hop love includes Chocolate Bourbon IPA, Whiskey Barrel IPA, Hop Hash IPA, Some Strange (Dank Tank throwback), Double Bourbon Aged IPA, and all the cask offerings.

Overall, it was yet another successful IPA Day across the U.S. Here at SweetWater, five IPA cask variations were gone in an hour. I’m pretty sure the barrel-aged IPAs blew at the same time. One thing’s for sure: America’s love affair with hops continues. Check out the video above and the pics below.

SweetWater’s Next Dank Tank Has a Gameshow Vibe & a Love Child [Updated]

SWB_DT_Barker_BottleArt_130710_08CT

SweetWater Brewery’s (Atlanta, GA) next experimental brew in their Dank Tank Series features a Belgian influence. This new offering has a daytime gameshow vibe, as the adventures of El Danko continue. Take a read below and question whether that coffee you’re drinking is strong enough.

Workin’ as a caddy at Bushwood, El Danko was stoked to find out he would be shouldering Boob Barker’s bag. Figuring Boob was a swell guy who liked to have fun, El Danko slipped an exploding golf ball onto the first tee. Boob was so enraged after the ball blew, he threw a haymaker at El Danko and broke his high heel. Fearing a big lawsuit and being hammed in the tabloids, Boob offered him a rigged spot on The Price is Wrong to keep him quiet. Sure enough, down in Studio City 42 days later. Rod Roddy bellowed out to 0 Danko “Come on down!” He was ecstatic as they wheeled out some fancy leather chaps and some extra crisping hair mouse which he just purchased last week. Bidding $420 m the lot El Danko nailed it! With a kiss from Barker’s Beauties as the bonus, he strutted on stage and with a wink he gave a slap on the ass to Boob Barker himself.

On to the big prize, El Danko was confronted with the infamous Cliff Hanger climb! Just as the yodeler was about to cliff dive off the ledge, he came to a screeching halt. The Dankster had pulled it off.  Claiming the prize behind Door #2: Pimpin’ high heels and some private the behind Curtain 43 with Ester-y, the Belgian Barker Beauty, who 9 months later delivered the biggest strprise of all! Blam!!! El Danko is a dad living in Belgium. Jobless, he got a gig at Easte-y’s family brewery to pay for his Price is Wrong lovechild, Barnold Schwarzenkegger. The Boob Barker Belgian Behemoth Boogieboy. Benjoy

Beer Street Journal Video: Inside SweetWater’s New Brewhouse (Part 2)

Part 2 of a 2-part series, Beer Street Journal goes inside SweetWater Brewery’s massive new 400 barrel brewhouse. The Atlanta based craft brewer’s story began when founder Freddy Bensch and Kevin McNearney travelled from Colorado to Atlanta during the Summer Olympics. They both got a good vibe from the city and decided building a brewery here was their destiny.

February of 1997 saw the first beers from SweetWater rolling off the tiny bottling line on Fulton Industrial Parkway. Over time, the brewery grew and relocated to SweetWater’s current location on Ottley Drive near Midtown Atlanta. Not so shockingly, the demand and desire for SweetWater continued to grow. This time, however, the decision was made to build for not only current beer demand, but future needs.

Cash in hand, SweetWater went shopping. Freddy (working with brewers Nick Nock, and Mark Medlin) chose this 400 barrel Stenneker brewhouse; now the largest craft brewing facility in Georgia. The new equipment truly is a site to behold. Nick Nock is the brewery’s 3rd employee. Check out this 8 minute intimate sit down with Nick, and pics of the installation.

Today, Beer Street Journal will bring you a two part-er on the growth of one of Atlanta’s premier craft breweries – SweetWater. The 16 year old brewery is polishing off a multi-million dollar expansion that more than quadruples their production capacity. To give you a feel on how big this expansion is, here are some images on the installation of the new brewhouse. The massive, multi-level build is seen here just after the kettles were set in July, 2012.  This is the beginning of the 400 barrel brewhouse that went live in February, 2013
