Founders Big Lushious joins Backstage Series as release #11

Founders Big Lushious, a chocolate raspberry stout, in debuts in December. This will be the 11th release in their coveted Backstage Series.

The stout is just shy of imperial status at 7.8% ABV, “kissed” with a touch of tart raspberries and chocolate. The brewery wanted to finish the year was a decadent dessert style offering to share with family and friends.

“We thought Big Lushious would make a great release for the holidays,” said Co-Founder and Vice President of Brand & Education Dave Engbers. “It’s a luxurious beer for us. It’s meant for bringing to parties and is perfect for sharing with friends and family after a feast.”

Founders Big Lushious will debut in 750ml bottles, for a suggested retail price of $16.99. Expect Big Lushious in stores around December 1st, as it wraps up the series for 2014.

Founders Adding Imperial Black IPA This Fall

Founders Brewing (Grand Rapids, MI) has a new IPA to add to their world class lineup of hoppy offerings, Dark Penance. Penance is an Imperial Black IP that the brewery starting developing over a year ago.

“We don’t just add beers to our lineup to have something new on the shelves,” said Dave Engbers, co-founder and vice president of brand and education at Founders Brewing Co. “Our Backstage Series is for experimentation and keeping things fresh, and we still only put those out a few times a year. Dark Penance, on the other hand, went through many recipe iterations before we were willing to put it up there with the other beers that we release again and again, year after year.”

Founders Dark Penance will be the first new addition to the lineup since All Day IPA launched in Spring, 2012. The beer is brewed with Midnight Wheat which softens the finish, and darkens the beer. Available in 12oz bottles starting in October.

Founders Backstage #10: Dissenter Imperial IPL

Founders Brewing Company (Grand Rapids, MI) will release their 10th offering in their Backstage Series in August.

It has been twelve years since Founders brewed a lager, the last being Noble Lager in 2002. The brewery has test batched Dissenter IPL on the pilot system in Grand Rapids, and released it in limited quantities in the taproom leading up to the release.

Dissenter IPL features a wide variety of tropical and citrus-forward hops, and will release on August 1st, 2014. ERP $11.99.

Founders Adds Arizona

Founders Brewing Co. announced today their plans to expand distribution to Arizona.

The brewery has signed a distribution deal with Hensley & Company to distribute all across the Grand Canyon State.  

“Arizona is our first truly western state of distribution,” said Co-Founder and CEO Mike Stevens. “There are a lot of Michigan natives in Arizona, and it’s a state with a developing craft beer scene, so it made sense for us to open it this spring.”

The first shipment occurs on the week of April 21st. The brewery’s year round and seasonal offerings in draft and bottle.

April will be a busy month for Founders. Five states will finally have the lineup, including Arizona, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana.

By May, 2014, Founders will be in 32 states.

Founders All Day IPA Coming to 15-Pack

Founders Brewing Co. will be replacing all their All Day IPA can 12 packs with 15 packs this March. The price will remain the same. 

“We are able to offer 15-pack cans due to production efficiencies from packaging cost savings,” said Co-Founder Mike Stevens. “We’re excited to pass the savings on to our customers as a way of saying thank you for their reception of All Day IPA.” 

All Day IPA is a 4.7% ABV session ale, brewed with Simcoe and Amarillo hops. This is the first time a major craft brewery has put out a 15-pack. Founders calls the new 15-pack a “Brewers Dozen.”

Founders Smoked Porter Headed to Backstage Series

Founders Brewing Co. will introduce Smoked Porter this winter in the Backstage Series in early 2014. The beer is brewed with a combination of beech wood smoked barley and oak smoked wheat. This will be Founders first ever smoke beer release.

In addition to the smokey flavor, the brewery added a generous helping of chocolate malt to balance out the beer.

“This is a style of beer that we’ve discussed brewing for a decade,” said Co-Founder and Vice President of Brand & Education Dave Engbers. “We weren’t able to fit it into our production schedule for years. Now, with our pilot system, our brewers have room for greater experimentation and aggressive recipe formulation. Brewing beers like this was the idea behind launching our Backstage Series and was a driving force in our investment in a pilot system this past summer.”

Look for Founders Smoked Porter in 750 ml bottles in February, 2014 in Michigan only. Draft will be available across the brewery’s distribution footprint.

Founder’s 2014 Lineup, Broken Down

This is the 2014 release calendar for 2014. No real crazy surprises here. There is a specialty beer in development right now that will debut in October, 2014.

The seasonal lineup will include Breakfast Stout, Red’s Rye IPA (just renamed), and Rübæus.

Nitro Series – Look for Nitro Oatmeal Stout and Nitro Pale Ale in your market in 2014.

The specialty line has been cut down to four beers, to give them a full three months of availability. Those will include Imperial Stout, Curmudgeon, Double Trouble, and another TBA.

Backwoods Bastard is a limited release alongside Devil Dancer, Harvest Ale, and KBS.  (It’s barrel aged, and limited by nature anyway.)

The Backstage Series will announced as 2014 unfolds.
