The beer does not make itself properly by itself. It takes an element of mystery, it takes an element of mystery and of things that no one can understand.”

Cigar City To Can Jose Marti

Porter in a can? Looks like the perfect shower beer on a cold day! Cigar City adds yet another to their growing canned offerings with their José Martí American Porter.

“This is a heavily hopped high gravity porter featuring the hopping levels of an India Pale Ale with the rich and roasty malt profile of a robust porter. Heavy hop rates, while uncommon in today’s porters were not unknown historically and recipes from the British porter producers of the 1800’s evidence hopping rates far in excess of what is common for the style today.”

Tröegs Discusses Future Plans with Beer Street Journal

After receiving news from Tröegs Brewery (Hershey, PA) regarding a few expansion items coming to the brewery, Beer Street Journal got to chat with the crew and get a feel for what is going on. According to statements from brewery manager Ed Yashinsky, Tröegs has been under constant construction since their inception in 1997. They are currently at capacity. Here is the rundown of changes:

– This year we are automating our packaging line, installing two new bottling lines
– 6 new fermentation tanks by Summer, 2013
– 2 Smaller Fermenters for “Scratch Beer Series”
– 4 (300 Barrels) for year round beers
– New automated bottling line for 750ml or 325 ml corked & caged bottles.
– Small bottle filler will give the option to do test bottle runs, like barrel aged beers.

With the installation of these tanks, the building will be full – no more fermentation space under the current roof. Next stop will be fermenters outside the building, or a potential addition to the current building.

Second location? The thought has come up, but no immediate need. Troegs did admit the have shopped around for another building around Hershey.

Cigar City Adds Tocabaga to Cans

Cigar City Brewing (Tampa, FL) announced they will be adding to their line up of canned beer this week. Tocobaga Red Ale will be the first as it was originally anticipated to be launched with the first batch of Cigar City cans.

“The Tocobaga lived off the bounty of Tampa Bay hundreds of years before the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500’s. They were potters, tool makers and the only Florida natives to grow maize. The large platform mounds they built are still with us today, with one of the largest found near Old Tampa Bay in Safety Harbor, Florida. Climb to the top, and with a little imagination, you can see Tampa Bay as they did.”
