When You Have Extra Growlers…

I guess breweries see some weird shit sometimes. When Yazoo showed up to the brewery this morning, someone had left a care package. A Hefty bag full of empty glass growlers. That’s one way to recycle right?

Apparently You Can Get A DUI on a Motorized Shopping Cart

800px-MotorCart

When you think of driving under the influence, you think of a car right? Me too, but DUIs aren’t limited to just highway vehicles. Apparently motorized shopping carts count too. A 63-year-old man in Fairbanks, Alaska grabbed cookies and cake mix, and then drove out of the store into traffic.  A store employee called the police and cornered the drunk offender.

The individual was administered a sobriety test, and was found to be 4x the legal limit and was arrested. Sadly, this isn’t his first DUI charge. Note to those drunk shoppers: Stay on foot. [FairbanksDaily]

Congratulations America! As of Today, Homebrewing is Legal in All 50

AHA logo

In 1978, homebrewing was federally legalized in the United States. However, it was left in the hands of each individual state to choose whether to adopt the legislation. Recently, the last two hold out states – Alabama and Mississippi passed legislation allowing brewing at home.

With the last bit of legislation going into effect today, homebrewing is now officially legal in all 50 states since the first time since Prohibition. What’s left? Some states still maintain statues that would prevent home-brews to events, club meetings and more.

The American Homebrewers Association boasts more than 38,000 members. For a complete list of federal and state homebrewing laws, please visit the AHA website.

When Buying Fancy French Water Gets You Arrested For Underaged Drinking

0007336032341_500X500

Maybe it’s because it’s French water, or maybe there is an underground water distribution ring at the University of Virginia. Either way, alcoholic beverage control officers in Virginia deemed that the 12 pack of La Croix water and cookie dough purchased by Elizabeth Daly back in April constituted her arrest and a one night all inclusive stay at the local pokey.

To be fair to the officers, I’d be suspicious to if a 20 year old sorority girl was walking from the store carrying purified French water and Tollhouse cookie dough. The charges have since been dropped but the District Attorney still stands by the officers conduct.

Now excuse me while I go get hammered on some Evian and Tollhouse Cookies.

After 30 Year Gap, Woman Wins National Homebrew Competition

Chocolate

It has been 30 years since the last time a woman won the National Homebrew Competition. Annie Johnson has captured the title of Homebrewer of the Year for her entry – a Lite American Lager. This goes to show you that it is not the style that matters, its how well you make it.

The competition this year featured 2,187 homebrewers from all over the United States, with nearly 8,000 entries leading up the the conference. Other winners included Tavish Sullivan, Cidermaker of the Year award with his Common Cider, and Mark Tanner as the Meadmaker of the Year award with his Strawberry, Rhubarb and Blackberry Mead.

The National Homebrew Competition has evaluated 103,075 brews in the past 35 years of existence.  Next year’s is in Grand Rapids, Mich., June 12-14. [PressRelease]

12 Degree Brewing Opens In Colorado

12 Degree Brewing

12 Degree Brewing just opened this month in Louisville, Colorado. The brewery is near Westminster, just north of Denver.  Jon Howland is the brewery’s founder, and he will be brewing Belgian inspired beers from what used to be a temperance house. (Where people went NOT to drink, protest the sale of alcohol, etc.) Pretty ironic that the building now hosts a brewery.

12 Degree has a 7 barrel brewhouse (217 gallons a batch) and will have a kitchen on site as well. While the website is under construction, the Facebook page is active. 12 Degree’s beers are currently draft only.

Editor’s Note: We Got Hacked

BSJ-Cap-Hi-REZA few weeks ago we started making improvements to Beer Street Journal. (You’re about to see some new, cool stuff.) At one point while making some changes, evil snuck in. While viewing the site never put your computer in danger, some malicious script from some malicious douchebag (s) pissed off Google. So, we had to comb through 5 years of posts, cleaning up the script injections.  Don’t even ask about the backup situation.

So, here we are with a nice, clean site again. Apologies for the last few days. Sometimes people suck. We’re back, and have some new things on the way.

Seriously, thank you for reading. It means a lot. I wish I could buy you all a beer. – Reid
