Sierra Nevada chooses Bitburger Brewery for Oktoberfest 2019 collab

In 2015, Sierra Nevada released an Oktoberfest ahead of the fall season. Instead of simply brewing the beer in the German tradition (releasing it for their on-site fest parties), Sierra Nevada took it a step further. They began collaborating with some of the best German breweries in the world.

The first edition was quite a masterpiece- combining Sierra Nevada’s hardcore brewing quality with Brauhaus Riegele’s 600+ years of brewing experience. A different kind of festbier and you could certainly taste it.

Since then, Sierra Nevada collaborated Mahrs Brau, Brauhaus Mittenberger, and most recently – the oldest brewery in the world, Weihenstephaner.

For the 2019 release, Sierra Nevada has selected Bitburger Brewery. Based in Bitburg, Germany, Bitburger lays claim to one of the top breweries in sales volume in their home country. Founded in 1817 by Johann Wallenborn, the brewery’s pilsner sells over 1 million U.S. barrels annually.

This year’s Oktoberfest edition is brewed with Bitburger’s Siegelhopfen (meaning “sealed hops”)—a classified hop blend that has never been shared outside the German brewery walls, according to Sierra Nevada. Additionally, Bitburger offered their signature house yeast, also never shared outside of their own brewing operations.

“We are thrilled to be brewing together with our friends from the iconic Sierra Nevada Brewery. Not only are we united by our passion for exceptional beer and truly unique hop flavors, we also share a long history of transatlantic exchange, leading to this exciting collaboration.” – Jan Niewodniczanski, Managing Director of Bitburger

Style: Oktoberfest
Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft. One-Time Release.
Debut: Late July 2019

Creature Comforts Tropicalia is coming to 16-oz cans soon

Creature Comforts Tropicalia, the Athens, Georgia based brewery’s top-selling beer, and one of the Southeast’s most popular India pale ales, is coming to 16-ounce cans this summer.

Creature Comfort’s massive success has a lot to do with Tropicalia. This balanced, juicy IPA has a very loyal following, so much so, that for a while stores would limit sales of this year-round beer to just one 6-pack per person.

For the loyal Tropicalia acolytes, expect a new format coming your way this summer – Tropicalia 16-ounce cans. The pint-size cans are a hot packaging format in the beer industry, and for Creature Comforts. 16-ounce “Trop” cans are a no-brainer. The brewery has been releasing 16-ounce cans for a while now, but only for their taproom/small batch releases.

David Stein, Creature Comforts co-founder and head brewer tells Beer Street Journal that fans can expect this larger can format sometime in June 2019. He also noted that the 12-ounce cans will remain in the brewery’s lineup as well.

Style: IPA

Availability: 12oz Cans, 16oz Cans, Draft. Year-Round
Debut (16oz): June 2019 (Estimated)

Creature Comforts Cosmik Debris returns this month

Creature Comforts Cosmik Debris, a double IPA that first debuted in May 2015 makes a seasonal return this month.

Easily one of the hoppiest releases in the Athens, Georgia based brewery’s lineup, Cosmik Debris has been a fan favorite since day one. In 2016 the brewery canned the imperial IPA and updated the can artwork in 2017. (Above is the 2016 artwork.)

Cosmik Debris has a brilliant aroma from the hop profile that will lessen with age. This beer should be kept cold and consumed as fresh as possible. – Head Brewer David Stein. “
