NoDa Brewing Releases First Bottles [PICS]

NoDa TriUmphant Release

Yesterday was a milestone for one of Charlotte, North Carolina’s newest breweries – the first bottle release.  On Saturday, March 24th NoDa Brewing released just over 1,500 bottles of TriUmphant Ale to a very willing crowd. The rainy morning didn’t stop anyone from lining up for the event. (Some of us were nursing hangovers from an epic 40-tap Stone Brewing takeover with Greg Koch the night before…) I would keep NoDa on your radar. There are great things coming from that brewery. Really great things.

Guinness Perfect Pour Contest 2012 Atlanta [Pics]

Last night was rowdy, to say the least.  Where did I spend my evening?  At the 2012 Atlanta Guinness Perfect Pour Con  Competitors from some of the city’s best bars came out to compete, in a bracketed, single-elimination style Guinness pour-off.  Bartenders were dropped 2 per round due to “pour fouls” like overflowing pour, excessive bubbles, too much head, not enough, or getting taps caught in the pour.  Two expert judges scrutinized each pint, eliminating those little screw-ups that keep that Guinness pint from looking its best.  Hi five to everyone moving slowly after a night of Guinness & car bombs.

Competitors included:  Tilted Kilt, Pub 71, Donovan’s, Ri Ra, Taco Mac, The Fred Bar, Cheeky, Limerick Junction, Olde Town Tavern, Meehan’s, Old Blind Dog, Fado, Wild Wing, Padriac’s, The Nook, Stout, Buckhead Saloon, Tap, & more…   The 2012 winner?  Ri Ra!  Below are pics from the event.

SweetWater’s 15th Anniversary Party [Pics]

SweetWater Brewing celebrated 15 years with a massive throwdown this past Saturday at the brewery in Atlanta, Georgia. The party sold out quickly and stayed packed despite the rain.

As you know by now, in honor of the occasion, SweetWater brought Kevin McNerney back to create 15 Years of Heady Beers.  The ale is a recreated version of their original Extra Special Bitter (ESB) recipe with a bump into barley wine status.  See the big cake in the pics?  SweetWater teamed up with a local bakery Perfect Wedding Cake, to create a massive 5-feet-tall by 3-feet-wide chocolate cake. The cake is made with SweetWater Happy Ending Imperial Stout.

Missed the party? Sucks for you.  Did you make it?  Relive it here.  Cheers to 15 years heady people  Also, check out our photos from behind the scenes of the bottling of SweetWater 15th Anniversary.

SweetWater 15th Anniversary Bottling [Pics]

SweetWater 15th Anniversary Bottling

Today, SweetWater Brewing bottled their 15th-anniversary release – 15 Years of Heady Beers at their brewery in Atlanta, Georgia.

Co-founders Freddy Bensch and Kevin McNerney were in-house to bottle their special anniversary ale.  The recipe is based on the brewery’s original ESB recipe which happens to be the first beer they released 15 years ago, transformed into a special barleywine-style ale.

It tops out at 10%.  Look for it on shelves in mid-February 2012.

12th South Winter Warmer

On December 10th, Nashville’s 12 South neighborhood saw the first Winter Warmer Festival. We’re talking stouts, winter warmers, barrel aged beers. It was chilly, making the whole theme even more perfect.  The fest saw the likes of Green Flash Brewing, Chattanooga Brewing, Craggie Brewing, Good People, Hat Trick (coming soon), Jackalope, Yazoo, Left Hand, Red Brick, Goose Island, Calf Killer, Oskar Blues, Jackie O’s,  Schlafly & more.  This event was small, but kick ass.  You missed out.  Nashville has a growing beer scene worth checking out.
