Widmer 30 for 30 Preview: Pitch Black 2010

A sneak preview of Widmer Brothers Brewing‘s (Portland, OR) a future release in their 30 Years celebratory releases- Pitch Black 2010.

Along with a select few other beers from NW brewers, this beer helped write the BJCP style guidelines for “American-Style India Black Ale” or as some would rather call it, Black IPA or Cascadian Dark Ale. Bringing home a gold medal from the Great American Beer Festival in 2009, Pitch Black IPA is the perfect example of how the Pacific Northwest likes their beer…dark, bitter, with a ton of hops. 6.5% ABV

The brewery will formally announce the release soon.

Style: Black IPA
Availability: 22oz Bombers. Limited Release.
Arrival: TBA

Widmer Releases Three More Celebratory Offerings

Widmer Brothers Brewing (Portland, OR) continues their 30 Beers for 30 Years celebration with three bottle releases this month. Local Portland artists created the labels for each of the new beers. These next releases transport Widmer back to their German brewing roots.

Festbier – First brewed in 1987, was Widmer’s first winter seasonal offering. 6.5% ABV, 34 IBUs. Art

Maerzen – Originally brewed in 1988, this traditionally spring release is 5.5% ABV, 20 IBUs

Bockbier – First released in 1989, was intended to change 80’s drinkers opinions of dark beer. 6.6% ABV, 30 IBUs

“2014 is a perfect time to re-release these beers,” said Rob Widmer, co-founder of Widmer Brothers Brewing. “There’s a definite thirst for German-style craft beers today, particularly here in Portland where German styles and German-inspired craft breweries are on the rise. We like to think that we were on the forefront of that trend 30 years ago, and it’s great to see beer drinkers showing enthusiasm and appreciation for styles that helped us build our brewery.”

30 cases of each will be available solely in the Portland, Oregon market starting this week (of May 5, 2014). Ethan Allen Smith of Peetkegler created the Festbier label, Adam R. Garcia of The Pressure created the Mäerzen label, and Andy Morris of Chandelarrow created the Bock label.

Style: Oktoberfest, Marzen, Bock
Availability: 22oz Bombers. 30 cases, Portland, OR
Arrival: May 5th, 2014

Good News for Gluten Free Drinkers

Just this past weekend, a few of us were lounging by the pool. A friend that loves beer, but medically has to drink gluten-free was trying to be sneaky about her bottles of Omission Lager and Pale Ale in a glass free zone. Sadly, there aren’t many gluten-free options in cans.

There just might be some good news for her. As you can see above, it looks like Omission Lager could see aluminum soon. Great news for those gluten-free drinkers needing some versatility.

The Omission series is brewed by Widmer Brothers Brewing in Portland, Oregon. Instead of brewing without gluten, the brewery has developed a propriety process to remove it. The result is some of the best gluten-free beer we’ve tasted to date.

Omission Lager is a refreshing and crisp beer, brewed in the traditional lager style. Perfect for a variety of beer drinking occasions, Omission Lager’s aromatic hop profile offers a unique, easy-drinking beer for those looking for a lighter and approachable beer style.

Ommision Lager is one of three in the family, alongside Omission Pale Ale and Omission IPA. You can find the current selections in 12oz bottles & draft.

Style: Lager
Hops: Citra, Sterling, Mt. Hood
Malts: Pale, Caramel

Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft. Cans (TBA)

4.6% ABV, 20 IBUs

Collaboration: Widmer Brothers & Boneyard Beer

A new collaboration is on the way in the craft beer industry. This year Widmer Brothers Brewing (Portland, OR) celebrates 30 years of craft brewing. To celebrate, the brewery is collaborating with a few special people. (Six to be exact.)

Coming soon is Blacklight IPA, brewed with Boneyard Beer from Bend, Oregon. Widmer Brothers brewer Ben Dobler has known Boneyard’s Tony Lawrence for 17 years, making this first collaboration an easy choice.

Blacklight IPA is a meld of the two breweries styles. A hop forward, sessionable 4.2% abv black ale with dark roasty notes.

Brewed with a heavy dose of five different hops varieties and stained black as night with cold-steeped dark malts, this beer hits huge with hop flavor and aroma without the heavy roast and harsh bitterness suggested by its color.

Widmer Brothers/Boneyard Beer Blacklight IPA will be available in 22oz bombers in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Minneapolis, New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia.

Style: Black IPA
Hops: Alchemy, Nelson Sauvin, Amarillo, Summer, Citra
Malts: Two Row Pale, Midnight Wheat, Special Aromatic, Flaked Barley, Caraffa III, Caravienne

Availability: 22oz Bombers
Arrival: April, 2014

4.2% ABV
