Ska Brewing Announces Hibernal Vinifera Stout Cans (PR)

DURANGO, CO — Ska Brewing is announcing the second release in its Seasonal Stout series: Hibernal Vinifera Stout, an oak-aged foreign-style stout brewed with Malbec grapes. The beer–in keeping with the series’ solstice and equinox release dates–will be released on the winter solstice, December 21st.

“Winter weather causes most of us to start craving heartier food, and beer is no exception. This beer is 8% Alcohol By Volume (ABV), and the Malbec grapes and oak aging will complement that with a richness and depth that are perfect for the winter season,” said Ska Brewing Overlord of Brewing Operations Bill Graham. “This will be a great beer to have during the cold, short days ahead.”

The packaging for the Hibernal Vinifera Stout, pictured below, features a black, 12-oz. can, with Ska’s True Blonde character as the Sumerian goddess of grapes and the cold season, Ngeshtin-ana. As with all four of the stouts in the Seasonal Stout series, the beer will be released in cans, and distributed in all of Ska’s markets.

According to Ska President and Co-founder Dave Thibodeau, Ska will complete the Seasonal Stout series with two more new, canned seasonal stouts in March and June of 2013. “The Hibernal Vinifera Stout follows on the heels of our Mayan-themed stout, and assuming the 12/21/12 calamity-howlers are wrong, we’ll all live to see its release. Come to think of it, we probably ought to name a beer ‘calamity-howler,’ in honor of all the crazy predictions that don’t come true.”

Oskar Blues & Ska Create oSKAr the G’Rauch

Shortly after the Great American Beer Festival this year, Ska Brewing travelled to Longmont, Colorado to Oskar Blues. The two brewery friends in canning came together to celebrate the 10 Year CANiversary of Dale’s Pale Ale. Introducing the newest Colorado collaboration oSKAr the G’Rauch, a smoked IPA.  Both breweries started canning in within a few months of each other staring in November, 2002.

Oskar Blues has selected the new 19.2 oz “royal pint” for this CANlaboration. The brewery is spending today stickering the cans for the release on Saturday. What about the beer? What did oSKAr the G’Rauch say to the face? Slap! Aromas of freshly-peeled orange and apricots with a touch of……..smoke? Juicy citrus and fruit flavors dominate but don’t overpower the slightly sweet malt structure. Finish is all citrus rind ping-ponging with some smoky phenols.

Style: Imperial IPA (Smoked)
Availability: 19.2 oz cans, sold individually. Brewery release only.
Arrival: November 17, 2012

8.5% ABV

Ska Kicks Off Seasonal Stout Program with Autumnal Mole Stout (PR)

(DURANGO, CO) – Ska Brewing’s Seasonal Stout program–featuring a different canned stout released near the equinox or solstice of each of the four seasons–kicks off September 22nd with the series’ first release: Autumnal Mole Stout.

The Autumnal Mole Stout is an ale brewed with cocoa nibs, spices and three varieties of chile peppers: Mulato, Ancho and Hatch green chiles, (also known as Anaheim Peppers.)

An important source of inspiration for the Autumnal Mole Stout is Ska Brewing’s location in the high desert of Southern Colorado, not far from the New Mexico border. “Mexican, New Mexican, Southwestern–that’s just the way we eat here,” said Ska President and co-founder Dave Thibodeau. “Around this time of year, chile roasters show up at the farmers market and grocery store parking lots and you can smell fresh-roasted chiles all over town. Given our Steel Toe (Milk) Stout’s 2011 GABF Gold and 2012 World Beer Cup Gold medals, we thought this new program should showcase our stouts. The balance between the milk stout sweetness and the chile spice and flavor seemed like a perfect combination for autumn.”

The packaging for the Autumnal Mole Stout (picture below) features a black, 12-oz. can, with Ska’s comic book-inspired take on the Mayan snake-god Kukulkan. The beer’s release will be celebrated on the Equinox at Ska Brewing World HQ in Durango, but according to Thibodeau “all the points on the celestial sphere should align, creating a national celebration on that most scientifically important day. At least in our nine markets.”

Ska will release three more new, canned seasonal stouts this year, with releases coming in December of this year, then in March and June of 2013, when–assuming the 12/21/12 calamity howlers are wrong– the cycle will begin again.

Ska Debuting Seasonal Stout Can Series

Ska Brewing will be releasing four seasonal stouts starting this fall.  According to Jonathan Shikes of Denver Westword, each seasonal will be just that – seasonal.  As in – you won’t see the beer coming out ridiculously far away from the actual season.  Each will stout be packaged in black cans.

First in the lineup: Autumnal Mole Stout, brewed with cocoa nibs, spices, and three different chile peppers.  (September) The follow ups in planning are peppermint stout, and potentially another aged in wine.  All very tentative of course.  Click on for the full breakdown.  [Denver Westward]

VID: Ska Brewing’s “Brew Minions” A Brew Master Parody

Ska Brewing (Durango, CO) just did this pretty hilarious (yet slightly long) parody of the Brew Masters show on Discovery Channel.  Have a few minutes for entertainment?  Check this out. Even though the end of the video isn’t a guy “rating” the beer, it speaks to the same “rating” mentality. haha.

Brew Minions, A Parody from David Thibodeau on Vimeo.

DURANGO, COLO., (Mar. 6, 2011) –It’s different colors, it has alcohol, it’s beer… but for Dave Thibodeau and his co-minions at Ska Brewing Co., (the very first craft brewery to copy Oskar Blues by canning), beer is a passion, a business, and a personal quest to make delicious craft beer and stay employed at the same time. “Brew Minions”, viewable at http://www.vimeo.com/20604077 , is a parody of the Discovery Channel’s recent series “Brew Masters”, featuring Sam Calagione and Dogfish Head Brewery.

Brew Minions follows Dave and his team as they flawlessly execute a project to make a 30th Anniversary beer for the long-running NYC Ska band The Toasters. Along the way they cross high mountain passes and travel almost across town, pioneer techniques to produce beers (and short films) of questionable originality, and ignore advice from Sam himself, who makes a cameo, but was otherwise not harmed in the making of this video.

From Rainbo Bread to bagels to bits of British bees, Dave is constantly pushing his team and himself to keep going, even though it’s not clear that anyone, including the Toasters, wants them to. The imagination of the Ska Brewing team is matched only by their obliviousness, which they wear like a badge. Attending beer conferences with Sam, glamorous product launches with rock stars, ripping off ideas and making toast, it’s all in a days work for Brew Minions.

“It’s easy to make fun of ourselves,” said Dave Thibodeau, Ska Co-Founder and President. “It’s hard to make a video that makes fun of us though, even a short one. It was supposed to be short. And it’s expensive. If anyone thinks this is funny they owe us.”

“Brew Minions” was written, directed and produced by Ska Brewing Co. and Marc Snider / Exposure Productions in Durango, Colorado. The post-credit video was produced by Red Tettemer and Partners.
