Budweiser & Metallica Create Limited Edition Cans

Budweiser Metallica Cans

Budweiser and legendary metal band Metallica have teamed up to create limited edition Metallica cans. The special release commemorates shows they are playing in Quebec this month, as well as opening a new venue, Centre Videotron.

Labatt is handing the brewing process. Less that 100,000 cases are earmarked for Quebec and Canada only.

“Budweiser has partnered with legendary rock band Metallica to channel the brute force of this historic show and be inspired by its vibrations, its energy and its decibels to create a beer in the image of the power of rock.”

A 48-foot Metallica branded tanker was driven to a recent Metallica show, according to the Quebec City venue, where it was serenaded by the band, and was driven back to Labatt to be canned.

The 12 once cans will come in 15 and 24 packs, and go on sale at the end of the month.

No United States release for the Metallica branded cans.

Interestingly, band co-founder James Hetfield is “reborn” straight-edge.

Elysian’s Co-Founder Resigns from Anheuser-Busch

Dick Cantwell, a co-founder of Elysian Brewing Company has resigned from Anheuser-Busch.

In January of this year, Elysian Brewing was acquired by Anheuser-Busch. In the weeks after the purchase, Cantwell said that the outcome of the talks, and acquisition, was not the outcome he had hoped for. This discord between his partners and Cantwell as these events have unfolded have made it so the working relationship has to be cut, a source close to the brewery tells Beer Street Journal.

One thing that is important to note, and this might set the tone for Cantwell’s future endeavors –  is that he has mentioned numerous times after the purchase, that “I am a craft brewer.” That might say all you need to know with this bit of news.

The brewery (now under A-B control) did not offer a statement to Beer Street Journal.

Anheuser Busch & Left Hand Could Soon Tangle

Another craft brewer is in Anheuser-Busch’s legal sights. The largest brewery in the United States may soon challenge a trademark attempt by Left Hand Brewing.

Left Hand was the first U.S. based brewery to launch a nitrogen based, bottled beer. (You’ve seen Guinness cans and bottles before.) It took brewery founder Eric Wallace a good chunk of change to develop the technology. Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout debuted at the Great American Beer Festival in 2011.

Left Hand has applied for a trademark for NITRO as it pertains to a beer name. This trademark of course doesn’t prevent any brewery from creating nitro beers, just using similar name branding.

AB InBev has received an extension in regards to the trademark, and have until June, 2014 to decide to challenge.
