Boulevard Rye-On-Rye Makes a 2015 Return

Boulevard Rye-on-Rye

Boulevard Rye-on-Rye, a boozy part of the brewery’s Smokestack Series, hits shelves in their home of Kansas City, Missouri this week. Shortly after, you’ll find this fall offering in Boulevard other markets.

As you can probably guess, Boulevard Rye-on-Rye is a rye beer. If you love rye, bourbon and rye bourbon, don’t miss this limited offering.

Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

Boulevard Rye on Rye is a draft and 750 milliliter, corked and caged offering.

Style: Rye Beer (Barrel Aged. Rye Bourbon.)
Availability: 750ml bottles, Corked & caged. Draft.
Seasonal Return: Late September, 2015

Sudwerk Rye of the Lager, a West Coast First

Sudwerk Rye of the Lager

Sudwerk Rye of the Lager arrives in early August. The imperial rye lager took more than a year of test batches to perfect.

Sure there are plenty of hop bombs out there, but Sudwerk Rye of the Lager is billed as a needle in a “shelf stack.” This 7% alcohol by volume beer is balances Simcoe and Amarillo hops with spicy rye.

With ales, naturally occurring esters can at times compete against other ingredients, especially in the finish. That’s not the case here. In contrast, lager yeast provides a platform to let the other ingredients shine through. Stone fruit aromatics combine with lemon and pepper flavors, a pleasant blend of spice, and a bold finish.

Sudwerk Rye of the Lager is a the first of its kind on the west coast as far as Trent Yackzan is aware of. Available in 22 ounce bottles for a limited time.

Style: Rye Beer
Availability: 22oz Bottles, Draft
Release: 7/31/15
