Surly Nein Celebrates Big Milestones

Surly Nein

Surly Nein looms. Celebrating nine beer filling years of brewing, Surly Nein marks a milestone for the brewery. Here in year nine, the brewery has grown exponentially, becoming one of the United State’s most talked about, and perhaps most traded for breweries. They even fought to get laws changed to build their dream destination beer mecca. There’s a lot of celebrating Omar Ansari and Todd Haug have to do.

Surly Nein is inspired by a recent trip to Bamberg, Germany. Brewed with oak-smoked malt, fermented with German Hefeweizen yeast, and aged on charred oak, this beer is one you won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

Who would have thought, when we sold our first keg in 2006, that we would raise our 9th Anniversary glasses in a new brewery, restaurant, and beer hall? So much has changed in such a short time, both at Surly and across Minnesota. The state’s beer scene is exploding and we are proud to have been part of the boom. Two things, however, haven’t changed a bit – Todd’s distinctive take on beer styles and our local artists’ amazing talent. Erica Williams’ meticulous design for NEIN is the perfect match for Todd’s approach to his craft.

Surly Nein will be available in 750ml bottles. The brewery has not yet announced this offering.

A Smokey Belgian Dubbel From Victory

Victory Brewing (Downingtown, PA) is brewing up something a new for you.  A bottle conditioned Belgian dubbel with a smokey twist.  Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet, founders of Victory Brewing created this beer after a Germany trip in ’87.  Otto is a German smoked malt Belgian dubbel.

Covaleski on Otto:
“The complimentary flavors of smoked malt and Belgian yeast seemed like an obvious combination,” said Bill. “As far as we know, no one has bothered to put them together until now.”
Label:

In 1987, when we arrived in Bamberg, Germany for the first time, St. Otto was not there to greet two thirsty travelers in a rented Fiat. He’d been dead for 848 years but we were alive, and our recent visit to the Belgian brewery of Orval only fanned the flames of our desire for fermented pleasures. The smoked malt (‘rauch’) beers of this lovely town where St. Otto was once Bishop were our siren song, luring us into deep, exotic flavors that we never before imagined in beer. Three decades later we wondered what smoked malt might add to a Belgian-style dubbel ale. Here is it, an Otto revival of sorts. We hope it helps rejuvenate some of our brain cells that were martyred in Bamberg so long ago. — The Brewmasters of Victory

Rauchbiers AKA Smoke beers are a German invention.  The smoke flavor in the beer comes from malted barley dried over a fire.  The beer is very unique, and very bold.   Tonight, Porter Beer Bar owner Molly Gunn will host a beer class investigating the rauchbier style.

For $20 dollars you get 6 beers and a boatload of knowledge! There’s no better way to try new beers at this price.  Class starts at 7:30 pm.
