New Belgium/Perennial Salted Belgian Chocolate Stout Releases

Style: Belgian-Style Imperial Stout (w/ ChocolateSalt)
Availability: 22oz Bombers, Draft.

New Belgium & Three Floyds Create “Gratzer”

Hitting shelves now is a new Lips of Faith release from New Belgium. For this offering, the brewery teamed up with Three Floyds to make hard to come by , smokey Polish style offering. The beer is gratzer, featured oak-smoked wheat.

It’s not dead, but Gratzer is definitely a long-buried style from Poland. And together with 3Floyds we have unearthed the best of beer zombies. Full of bold flavors from oak-smoked wheat, and along with Midnight Wheat, this beer presents a pure black pour. A subtle, spicy note from the Polish Lublin hops hides in the aroma, just below the dark and smoky surface. Despite all appearances, the Gratzer is very drinkable at 4.5% ABV, and walks itself with a nice, light body. Cheers to drinking smoky, undead beers. Prost!

Style: Gratzer
Hops: Target, Polish Lublin
Malts: Pale, Midnight Wheat, Oak-Smoked Wheat
Availability: 22oz Bombers, Draft. June, 2014

New Belgium Brews Ancient Style in Next Lips of Faith

A long time ago, before hops became widely available in brewing, spices were used to bitter beer. A mixture called fruit, was the bittering agent, a mix of spices such as juniper berries, ginger, aniseed, sweet gale, mugwort, yarrow & more. The use of gruit was mostly phased out by the 16th century.

New Belgium Brewing’s upcoming Lips of Faith release revisits a time where gruit was used to bitter. For Gruit, the brewery used a mixture of bog myrtle, horehound, yarrow, wormwood and elderflowers.

Just to brush you up on the spices, horehound has been used in cough drops for hundreds of years. (Black horehound is a sedative. Let’s assume it’s not in Gruit.) Yarrow and bog myrtle have been been used for both culinary and medicinal uses. Have you ever heard of absinthe? A big flavoring ingredient in that “green fairy” drink is wormwood.

Look for Gruit in 22oz bottles, and draft. Official New Belgium announcement coming soon.

Style: Gruit (w/ Yarrow, Bog Myrtle, Wormwood, Elderfower)
Availability: 22oz Bombers, Draft
Arrival: TBA

6.6% ABV

More Wood For New Belgium

New Belgium Brewing (Fort Collins, CO) is adding 32 new French Oak foeders to the brewery. That will bring the count to 64. A foeder is a large wooden tank used to sour the beer.

This addition will double the production of sour ale offerings in the coming years.

“With this expansion, we’ll get so close to that feeling I had the first time I walked through the forest of foeders at Rodenbach,” said New Belgium’s Wood Cellar Manager/Blender, Lauren Salazar. “Just knowing they’re all full of souring beer – ALL of them – is exciting. It’s a destination. Something you have to experience first hand.”

Tart Lychee and Eric’s Ale are expected to be in year round production by 2015. Over the next few months, the brewery will be rehydrating the barrels, and inoculating them with various wild yeasts. They will then age beer for nearly two years before bottling/kegging.

New Belgium’s Coconut Curry Ships

New Belgium Cococnut Curry

The latest in New Belgium’s Lips of Faith Series has released. Coconut Curry Hefeweizen is an eccentric beer brewed with coconut and curry, along with cinnamon, coriander, fenugreek, ginger, kaffir lime and cayenne pepper. Based on various popular home brew recipes.

The aroma is big and bold, offering coconut and curry tones alongside a hint of banana from the hefe yeast. The vast spice list carries a bit of heat, including cinnamon, coriander, fenugreek, ginger, kaffir lime and cayenne pepper, but the alcohol soothes the finish.

Style: Hefeweizen (w/ Coconut, Curry, Cinnamon, Ginger, Lime, Coriander, Fenugreek, Cayenne Pepper)
Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft
